Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

April 2019 - Had sold 2005 Honda City iDSI (Dolphin Shape) and Facelifted 2012 Toyota Fortuner AT 2WD, both of which had 1.5Lakh KMS on the ODO.

Elder brother got a Jazz CVT, uncle got impressed with it and got hold of a used Jazz CVT V variant with 17K kms on ODO and 2017 manufactured for well under 6 lakhs. Seemed fishy to me but he still got it. Needless to say, the car’s engine had a roar as loud as the first lot of iDTEC engines in 2013. A Petrol CVT sounded horribly louder than a used and tortured diesel engine would sound in private cabs!

Took it to Honda Service Centre, got the history checked, with a number of repaints and accidental history of the car in just a span of 2 years of its life.

The car ownership went on for just 5 days. The dealer through whom we bought it refused to take it back. Stopped by our friendly used car dealer who got the entire story into some automobile association whatsapp group and somehow managed to sell the car after putting in a lot of work. Got hold of a 6 months used Honda City ZX CVT from the mentioned friendly dealer, the very next day.

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

About a couple of decades ago, my dad once bought home a red Gypsy. He always wanted to get a Gyspy and got one kitted up for some off-road and farm use. Being tall, the front seat was terrible for me to sit. I don't even know how my dad managed to drive it in the relatively cramped space. The side-facing backseats was a nightmare and the beefed up leaf spring suspension just threw around me and my sister at the slightest road imperfections. A ride to the grandparents house just 5 kms away made us almost throw up with all that bouncing around. I remember telling him to leave me there and I would rather walk or catch a bus and get home rather than getting back on the Gypsy. We were wondering what made him get this abomination when we had a perfectly good car. Needless to say, he got rid of it in a week. A few years later, he was thinking of getting a Bolero. But he never got it probably because of the Gypsy experience with us.

Looking back at it now, I get why he wanted to get the legendary Gypsy and I would be itching to get behind those wheels too treading through uncharted territories.

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

Shortest car ownership: 10 months for a used BMW120i.
Reason to sell: lack of spacesaver/spare tyre & use of run flats (knew it when I bought it thinking I could live with it - no just couldn't digest it). Lack of sunroof & basically graduated to other more expensive ones so had no more space to park it :-p

The car itself was quite good & enjoyable.

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

Shortest ownership i had was for a bike.
I bought an SZ RR for my dad after a very long search
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/motor...yamaha-rx.html (A born again biker - Tips for buying a used Yamaha RX)

Unfortunately he was diagnosed with parkinson's, and ended up more or less bedridden almost immediately after buying the bike. He rode it maybe twice. I ended up selling it after 4 months and 27km at half the price I had bought it for because We had to relocate back to Kerala because of his condition. Bittersweet experience really.

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

My Shortest Ownership for a car has been the Hyundai Eon Magna+ in 2016 for a period of 8 months.

The car was purchased in Mar 2016 and sold in Nov 2016. This was used as a car for my wife to learn driving and served that purpose.

Of course, the intention was to keep the car for a longer period but other important things came up and she had to stop driving for sometime.

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

3 weeks - 3000 kms - lost 20,000 Rs !!!

That was the shortest ownership I had. It is my first and last preowned car also.

It was a Hyundai Accent Viva CRDi, black in colour, 77k kms done and excellent in looks which I had brought from a First Choice showroom in mid-2011. The service history also was excellent, and the only issue was a lag while cranking, which was assured to be a weak battery.

Long story short - Out of sheer excitement, jumped for the deal and brought the car home. Took the car for a 700 kms one side trip to Bangalore which we used to do every 2-3 months. Halfway done and the tank is empty! Damn, we used to do one way in one full tank and this car takes two! Felt something fishy. Accidently met with First Choice's mechanic and here comes the news, this car is developing a compression leak! Feeling cheated, I demanded a full refund. First Choice refused flatly and I left the car there. Luckily the ownership was not transferred to me. In few weeks time, managed to put some pressure and they sold the car to someone else and paid me 20k less than what I had paid for. End of story. Sigh.

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

My first comment on TBHP.

On two-wheelers, I purchased a Bajaj Boxer AT in 2011 with 55k on the ODO from a colleague and it turned out to be a lemon. Somehow I liked it though, specially the sedate riding. Sold it off to my landlord after 2 years, as there was no end to expenses. Drove almost 10000 KMs.

Next I bought a new RE Classic 350 in 2013. The service quality in A.S.S was so bad that I had to approach local mechanics after each service, just to get the niggles sorted. I had to keep going for a year as the warranty was there. Later, I moved to multiple local mechanics, and now finalized with one who is better than the lot. Been using it since, and it has crossed 7+ years and zoning on to 46k on the ODO.

My Dad had an interesting lineup. He started with a Bajaj M80, then moved to HH CD100, HH CD100ss, HH CBZ, Bajaj Pulsar 150, RE Thunderbird 350, and finally settled on an Activa 125 after attaining seniority. The used ones were driven 60000 Kms each and kept for 5-7 years.

I would like to take a special mention to my uncles' M80 from 1995 and Kawasaki Bajaj Caliber from 1998. They are still used to this day. My feeling is that they don't want to die.

On four-wheelers, I got a used 2012 Nano CX in 2016 with 27k on the ODO as I needed to learn driving and my budget only had that covered. Loved every bit of it except the same A.S.S who had a paltry service quality with exorbitant cost. I spent almost 30k in 3.5 years for regular servicing. And it still had niggling issues. Sold it today.

I bought a pre-owned Ecosport TDCi 2017 Titanium with 30k on the ODO which is crossing 2 weeks now.

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

My dad had bought a VW Vento. Mostly I used to drive it. Sold it after 2 years and 30K Km. It felt good to drive on the highways but the problem is that in India even the national highways have a lot of rough patches. The suspension was too stiff to handle Indian roads. Also the diesel had quite a bit of lag. Even flooring the pedal twice did not give an immediate reaction from the engine.

Got back less than 60% of what was originally paid.

Moved on to Octavia 1.8 TSI after vento. Octavia has a far better suspension and also the car returns the claimed millage or sometimes even more on highways with a light foot and the lag of the turbo petrol is negligible.

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

6 months!

It was a '96 Maruti 800 and we bought it back in 2012 for a mere 33,000 rupees primarily for learning how to drive.

6 months down the line, my dad got a really good deal on a used Alto K10 which was run just 500km and the asking price was just around 2.75 lakh! Hence, we sold off the 800 for 40,000 to a family friend!

The K10 then ran for two years until my dad eyed a used Dzire 2011 and sold off the K10 without any obvious reasons!

Thankfully though, the deal of the 2011 Dzire was called off and we bought the 2015 Dzire facelift VXI (1st in town! Enjoyed exclusivity for one day ).

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

6 Months !
It was in the early 2020 that our Humble steed Fiat Linea 1.3 MJD started showing its age. We decided to get the engine decarbonization being done in an FNG and it turned out to be worse
So we decided to get a new car in the budget of 10 lakhs. I compelled in Favor of Altroz but like any typical Indian Household the final result turned out to be a Maruti in Toyota Badge - The GLANZA
The car was being used by mom as her daily drive to her office. During one of our trips to Kochi, she was at a speed of 70+ and a truck was overtaking us. When the truck went passed as suddenly there was a vibration in the steering of the car, the whole car was affected by the wind and my mom felt like driving a toy. The car was very much unstable and then my words started to make sense to my parents. Actually Myself and My Dad wanted to have Nexon in the first place itself but was turned down by the Covid Situation and the Absurd Waiting Period of it. Now we took it as an oppurtunity and convinced THE HOME MINISTER. And Guess what We actually got a stellar deal of a 600km Run Petrol Automatic Nexon.

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

We bought a 2018 Honda Jazz VX CVT in 2022. The primary user was my dad and he wanted a small car to be used in the city. I was personally never a fan of the Jazz for our intended usage. Jazz was primarily used by my brother on weekdays and dad over the weekends. 10 months and 2 highway trips later even dad was annoyed with the performance. It's best for relaxed driving. The Jazz was sold off after 11k kms in 10 months and replaced with a Rapid TDi DSG.

Re: Your shortest car ownership period?

Shortest car ownership for us would be 1.5 years of a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso. Bought it and in a month the world went into a lockdown and eventually after about a year and a half moved back to India and hence had to sell off the car. Otherwise it was a wonderful car and served the purpose wonderfully well in those 1.5 years. Infact it probably was the fastest to 20k Kms of all my cars. Had bought it pre-owned when the Odo read 87k KMS and sold it to a dealer when the ODO was at about 109k in 1.5 years.

Rest of our cars have or will complete 10 years each - Alto LX & Ford IKON FLAIR 1.3 - 10 & 12 years respectively. Tata Safari Storme VX 4*4 - about to turn 10 and still running, TATA Tiago VX, turned 8 this month and still running well.

Cheers,
M
