Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

Will this be a detuned 1.2L Turbocharged Revotron engine from Nexon or an all new (or derived from 1.2L) 1.0L Turbo like the norm today with every B2 segment cars, which can also power the HBX when it releases in future?

What's the need to detune the engine? Altroz would get a better fuel economy and feel punchier because of the lesser weight. Why not be the most powerful car in the segment?

This should be a detuned version of the 1.2 Turbo petrol in the Nexon. Tata might use some marketing spiel to explain this away but more than likely it's because of the ancient gearbox they use in this segment.

One of the reasons why the Tiago and Tigor JTP didn't get the benefit of the full 170+Nm torque of the Nexon Turbo petrol.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

One question that has intrigued me for quite a while is, why TML chose to develop an all new 3 cylinder 1.2 petrol, when they already had a decent 1.2L 4 cylinder turbo-petrol that did duty in the erstwhile Tata Bolt. That engine had decent performance and at 89BHP and 140NM, it's power and torque figures weren't all that bad either, though no match to today's GDI turbo petrols. Even our own review highlighted the great low-end torque and driveability of that engine. They could have worked on that engine to extract more out of it instead of going the 3 cylinder route. It's not as if the new engine is all that better either.

I know that the folks at TML would have extensively evaluated this option before arriving at such a decision; obviously they know far better about this than I do.

Would appreciate if somebody can throw some light.

Tectonic Blue, also offered on the Nexon & the Tiago.

It might be delayed a bit. But this will still be the first Tata car with a DCT.

It was not BS6 compatible.

Also, easier to develop this detuned version of the Nexon's 120PS/170Nm BS6 unit.

But wasn't the JTP's 1.2 turbo praised enough to just use it as is in the Altroz turbo? If they can do an Altroz JTP, it becomes the most desirable car in the segment, beating the Polo TSi.

If these numbers are true, they are pretty ordinary figures for a segment which is consistently seeing hatchbacks offer in the range of 170+ Nm of torque in turbo petrol hatches. I see no need or rationale to detune the engine from the Nexon specifications. If the gearbox is unable to handle the torque, it may be a good idea to upgrade the gearbox.

It might still turn out to be a decent performer, but may not be in the same class as the Polo TSI for instance. Have to wait and watch, hope I am proved wrong. The design is truly awesome, and Tata would do well to ensure that the engine is a worthy fit for the sporty design.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

It is among the best looking hatchbacks out there but a rare sight on roads. A quality premium hatchback which had everything going for it except the most important things required today - a good enough petrol engine (not many today in this segment prefer diesel) and an automatic gearbox.

102nm/141nm petrol engine should have been standard from Day 1 (along with automatic gearbox). I hope Tata does not launch it as Altroz Sport! Because these figures are no match to the 'sport' badge.

Rather, now they should have launched it with a proper sport AT (TC or DCT) with same engine as in Nexon. It would have sold really well. Launching a car today with only a manual gearbox is almost like 'Dead on arrival' thing. Even a Thar is coming with a 'proper' AT gearbox, in both fuel types.

From what I gather, that 4 cyl engine was already tuned to its max capability (Based on the age old indica xeta engine??).

If you remember the TaMo Racemo, the 1.2 revotron was said to have an output of almost 200 hp. That means that the full potential of this engine is yet to be extracted.

I too am of the opinion that the de-tuning is done due to the gearbox. But because of the lighter weight of the Altroz over the Tiago, I feel performance should be at par with the JTP, and if that is so, the peak figures aside, the car will be a hoot and a half.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

I still have a concern with the Altroz getting the Turbo petrol.
Realistically speaking till now, most of the sales for Altroz were for petrol version without turbo and I feel there is a more urgent need for an Auto box to get / increase numbers.

What I am trying to say is it’s not just the Turbo petrol motor itself which can bring in numbers.

May be an AMT with the diesel can do wonders ?
