Re: Car tints totally banned by HC in Delhi!Update: SC asks to stick to permissible l

As per the provisions of sub-rule (2) of Rule 100 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 the glass of the windscreen and rear window of every motor vehicle has to be such and be maintained in such a condition that the visual transmission of light is not less than 70%. The glasses used for side windows have to be such and be maintained in such condition that the visual transmission of light is not less than 50%.

As rightly said by Tanveer, the apex court is giving the directions to correctly implement the law for every citizen.

Therefore, if your car windows are under limits, no need to take tension.

MODS: Please modify the title of the thread accordingly!

Cheers!

Supreme Court bans use of tinted glass beyond permissible limits

The Supreme Court on Friday banned the use of tinted glass, restricting visions beyond permissible limit as fixed under the Motor Vehicles Act, in vehicles.

A bench headed by Chief Justice SH Kapadia, however, made it clear that tinted glass can be used in vehicles of government officials for security purposes and asked the state governments to frame guidelines regarding this.

The Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, says that the glasses of windscreen and rear windows of vehicles should have a visual light transmission of 70 per cent and for side windows it should be at least 50 per cent.

The court passed the order on a plea seeking complete ban on use of dark films on car windows, including the vehicles used by VVIPs, alleging that many crimes in cities were committed by people using such cars with tinted windows.

The petitioner, Avishek Goenka, had contended that he had 25 RTI query replies from various police stations to back his claim that many crimes, including sexual assault on women, were committed by offenders who used cars with tinted glasses to evade public gaze and conceal their identity.

Do we start stripping glasses of films now? Repetition of the same many years ago.

Re: Supreme Court bans use of tinted glass beyond permissible limits

Its a good move by Supreme Court as there are many cars with very dark films/tints which are a cause of concern.

Absolutely not.

Manojmis has mentioned in the opening post that the Supreme Court has allowed having
  • 70% visibility film on front and rear windows.
  • 50% visibility films on the side windows
So if you have windows tints darker than these permissible limits than you may need to have them changed. I actually have 70% film on front and 50% film on the sides & rear in my car and don't see it necessary to replace just the rear windscreen film. As of 70% visibility film 3M CR70 is very costly and doesn't warrants a change for the rear.

Re: Supreme Court bans use of tinted glass beyond permissible limits

same guidelines were already in use but not implemented properly.

The tints from various companies DO NOT TAKE into consideration of fact that many cars are already fitted with tinted glasses of 30% so if you use further tint of 50% and 30% they combined become 65% and 51% for side and front thus becoming illegal. so if your car has legal tints on tinted glasses get ready to peel them

Glad to hear that it's not just one or two states this time. It's applicable to the whole country which is actually required. You never know what's going inside those 5% - 25% films. It actually is a very good move. Those who need the privacy of a 5% film may sit inside their homes with those on the windows NOM. The road is a public place and in my opinion a 50% visibility film is more than enough to get you enough privacy unless you are doing something illegal.
Kudos to Avishek Goenka.

How to know that a film is 50% visibility compatible. Any method to measure visibility.

Check these out :
Business Line : Industry & Economy News : Apex court bans use of tinted glass beyond permissible limits
Supreme Court bans use of tinted glass beyond permissible limits

It's not a complete ban on tinted glass. It only restricts the use of tinted glass beyond the visibility limits mentioned in the M V act. It is the visual light transmission that should be at least 50%; it doesn't say that you should have tinted glass.

You can do that using a Lux Meter. Maybe all you have to do is just roll up the windows and check whether there is decent visibility or just compare yours with another car that has 50% films. I don't think we're gonna see those lux meters here anytime soon (assuming that you live in Kerala).

Re: Delhi HC lifts ban on using tinted glass on four-wheelers

As per TOI reported, the cars should come with Front-back 70% or less, and 50% VMT for side glasses from the factory itself and any alteration with glasses using films are banned. Then what happens to those cars which comes with normal glasses? There should be more to this verdict and if the whole verdict is not in public domain then its unwanted harrasments coming to us in near future(Yes I have films on my car and those are all 70% VMT, only leaving front one as normal).

Kudos to Avishek Goenka.

All that requires privacy is not illegal.
In our roads, feeding a baby inside the tinted glassed car is much safer than anywhere else. Mothers and babies also need to travel at times.

This is just another example of 5% misusing a freely available liberty, only to land the other 95% in distress.

Re: Delhi HC lifts ban on using tinted glass on four-wheelers

If government can assure that crimes are happening in only cars with tint and no where else this would have been justified. But Majority of the crimes seem to happen at homes, offices, other public places more than cars. Morons who cannot create a secure environment can only make such ridiculous policies.

How are people able to evaluate things so irrationally.

Mothers with babies should always sit on the backseat (for safety reasons). And how is it possible for someone to see what's happening in a moving car?! I mean they just get a glimpse. Maybe on 3-4 line highways, it can be a problem but even then a 50% film must be enough because nothing noticeable is going on inside the car. People can only see a lady (and that too not clearly) sitting in the backseat and that's just normal. And the inconvenience you mentioned is nothing when compared to the no.of crimes and illegal activities that occur because of its use. Yes, it is an inconvenience but it's something we will have to come to terms with. Maybe you should buy that net like sun shade (I hope you have seen it/use it) for temporary use.
