Re: Car tints banned by HC! EDIT: Supreme Court bans all kinds of sunfilms in cars

I can't put more than 2, got my films removed though they were 70-50. Now my question is, if I put 3M CR 70, which is fully transparent AFAIK, how the cops will know that my car has films?

Did you remove them or did you take it to a specialist? If the latter, how much were you charged? Was there a long queue for removal?

I would suggest don't put up anything until there is clarity to the rule and how it will be implemented. Will be a waste of money if things go south.

PS: since you removed your tints, you're gonna get cooked on Saturday

Re: Car tints banned by HC! EDIT: Supreme Court bans all kinds of sunfilms in cars

The irony is that no Sun Film Manufacturer has expressed thier grief. Well known brands like Garware, 3m, VKOOL etc were supposed to jump right.

This would mean that they loose their business right ?

OR

Could it be like the "helmet compulsory" rule in Chennai / TN. It was told helmet would be compulsory and almost everyone bought helmets. After the initial week, the euphoria died and now-a-days chennai cops do not catch people without helmets (very rare). Helmet industry made a huge business.

Is this something similar hatching up for Auto-Film industry ?

Now court asks us to remove films, later someone RTI / film-makers would file a petition / request and if the rule is reversed at least to 70/50 standards, The Sunfilm industry would see a spike and as someone pointed out it would be in crores. Here is a sample calculation

Total 4Wheelers in India - 90,00,000 (Assume Buses, Trucks, cars et all whoever uses sun film)
Assume 80% use sunfilm - 72,00,000
Assume one spends approx 10,000/- on film
so 80% would spend - 7,20,00,00,000 = 7.2 Billion Rupees

If everyone removed the film and then the rule is reversed, the Sun-film industry would see a turnover of 7.2 billion INR

Reading the court order, it looks like, court assumed that manufactures are already using permissible level of tinting on glasses. But is it really true for all cars made in India?

The report also mentions a standard statement from the state Home Minister that the govt will study the judgement in full and then decide the course of action.

I get the feeling that Kerala home department is not too keen on implementing the ban. I'm not complaining.
Just saw the same thing on TV. They were saying that they were not going to enforce it proactively, and they wanted to give ample time for people to comply. Gotta love the Kerala Police!

Crazy judgement by an arm-chaired philosopher of a judge.

Today's TOI says Hyderabad police lack the manpower to implement the new judgement. I hope it is true. Let us see how things unfold in the next 2 weeks. After that the new law will hopefully lose its flavour.

Re: Car tints banned by HC! EDIT: Supreme Court bans all kinds of sunfilms in cars

So I guess folks in NCR are all riled up now given that quite an arbitrarily taken decision is going to be imposed from tomorrow and a few weeks after that all folks who have had their films removed can again put them on under the 50/70 limit. One begs to question why was this 50/70 limit restriction never imposed in the first place. Sometimes I have seen cars with almost 97% light rejection that is 3% VLT. Good or bad if there is a CMVR rule I am not sure why folks ignore the law and why wouldn't the cops enforce the same.

I was checking out the order and who were the respondents to this writ petition which was filed last year. It is listed as "UNION OF INDIA & ANR.". What does ANR. stand for? The lawyers for the respondents that is "UNION OF INDIA & ANR." were

Mr. Gaurab Banerji, ASG.
Mr. T.A. Khan, Adv.
Mr. S.A. Haseeb, Adv.
Mr. B.K. Prasad, Adv.

Assuming ASG stands for Additional Solicitor General and Adv. are the advocates on the Union of India payroll what kind of counter arguments were presented? Is there any way to go through the entire transcript of the proceedings? I am sure all of this is recorded in the court but not sure if it is digitized. Will be very interesting know. I still highly suspect the quality of arguments provided by the respondents when there is a written law in CMVR regarding visibility and 50/70 provides good enough visibility to prevent any crime if the cops actually want to . But then I am sure presenting this aspect in front of the honorable justices would have meant more embarrassment for the "UNION OF INDIA & ANR."

I am worried about those cars that do not come with Factory tint.

there are 2 scenarios here -

a) Base models that do not come with any Tints. (Alto base model)

b) Older cars that do not have any tinting (My Santro Limited Top End in 2007 did not have any factory tinting nor was i offered an option)

The ISO standards (quoted in the judgement) of 70% visibility is for the driver's safety not for police to see whos in the car. Its supposed to provide the driver good visibility while driving.

Kerala - Sunfilm's Own Country.

Thanks to KP for acting sensible by offering time for removal of films.

Kerala DGP's comment is seen in all TV channels; Will it be considered as contempt of SC order?

Quite right.

C'mon guys, we're tougher than that!
There was a time not too far back when there were no A/c's, no sun films.
A little sweat won't kill,LOL!
But seriously, this order is here & will have to be obeyed until it is amended.
And to do that, facts & logic will work, not emotions.
Perhaps organisations like Team BHP/SIAM/various Automobile Associations need to come together & build up a solid case?

Re: Car tints banned by HC! EDIT: Supreme Court bans all kinds of sunfilms in cars

I have an i20 and with films all around I am doing just about OK during the summer. I will remove the tints from my Swift and keep them on the i20 I think.

I pity my uncle with his Esteem :( that car has a notoriously inefficient AC and a lot of glass area.

Here we go. Its the D day.

We've grounded two of our cars "Diesels" and will be driving the 12 year old WagonR and 10 year old Alto, with gloves . And will pray! that might be 'interpreted' as more logical by SC than any logic.

Re: Car tints banned by HC! EDIT: Supreme Court bans all kinds of sunfilms in cars

Here is some news from Chennai which I just read at Today.in - A Top Indian online News site providing you India's Breaking news & latest news on a click

Quote:
CHENNAI: The Supreme Court's recent order banning black film on vehicle glasses, which comes into effect on Friday, has come at the most inappropriate time, the hottest month of the year. Motorists in Chennai say the rule will, in effect, leave them exposed to the merciless heat of the sun in the enclosed confines of their vehicles.*
I plan to take my Fiesta tomorrow, which has a lighter shade of sun film when compared to my Santro. Guys, wish me luck. Any other Chennaiite trying his luck tomorrow?
