Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

If the following news is correct, I'll say that the current slowdown is good!

Sources: https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Com...UV-in-35-years

"Suzuki Motor is launching its first new mini four-wheel SUV in 35 years and expanding showrooms in rural areas as it seeks to bolster flagging sales in India, its largest market.

The new model is the successor to the Gypsy, which local unit Maruti Suzuki began producing in 1985. The car went offline this March because of delays in safety updates, including the installation of air bags -- now legally required in India.

Mini-sports utility vehicles still enjoy solid demand in India. They are favored for transporting agricultural products through the country's unpaved roads. Suzuki is targeting the rural market with a new model, which could be produced locally and go on sale as early as this fiscal year.

The vehicle will be based on the Jimny Sierra mini-SUV, which was revamped for the first time in two decades and launched in Japan last July. The Gypsy was based off the original Jimny."

That is really good news. Don't know about the use of transporting agricultural products, the Jimny would really stand out in the crowd of pseudo SUVs and cross-overs.

If the above news is true, then it could be based on this,

- Suzuki plans for the 5-door model had already begun

- Soft top and long wheelbase models may appear in the future

- The 5-door model will appear around 2020

This information has also become a big topic in India, which is Suzuki's main selling country in June this year, and it is said that soft top and long wheelbase models may appear in the future .

Ah! Finally a reliable cheap off-road vehicle. The Thar and Bolero are too crude for an urban setup! Though they are brilliant for rural areas and also in serious off road, always wanted a second car that is small enough for use in the city and can be driven on bad roads as well.

If priced well, I am ready to sell a hatchback for this car, even if its a 2 door! This is a very practical car!

Bring it on Suzuki. Would love to have it with the following features in the base variant:
  • 4 wheel drive automatic
  • Essential safety gear and off-road gear
  • Small wheelbase
  • Remote control central locking
  • 2 doors and hardtop
  • AC and sound system
  • Power windows
  • 2 modes, one for city driving and one for off-road driving

I doubt Jimny will be cheap!.It is not having a VFM pricing even in matured markets. I believe it will be priced north of 20 L.

re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

The Jimny is not going to be priced at the usual Maruti bracket.
This is going to be over 20 lakhs a piece if it ever comes here.
So it is not really going to be a replacement for a 6-8 lakh Gypsy.

re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

My guess is Maruti will sell it in two variants, a 1.5 petrol same as global Jimny sierra and a new 3999mm model with a five door setup with a 1.2 petrol. This will help it duck the excise duty norm and price aggressively.

lets see

Just curious. Why do you guys expect the Jimny to be priced above 20L? Is it expected to come in as a CBU? I highly doubt they will sell many at that price.Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?-imageuploadedbyteambhp1565430904.937522.jpg

Since the launch date is 'this fiscal', there is no chance that a reworked 5-door version to come here. The time left is not enough for such modifications and road testing.

As it is based on Jimny Sierra, it will (99%) be a 2-door wide-body model but the engine will be a 1.2 NA / turbo to enjoy the tax benefit.

Since they are looking for a boost to the Indian sales, and as 'Gypsy' has tremendous brand value here in India, it can be made as a family of Suvs:

1) A 3.6meter 2-door 4-seater version with 1.2L NA engine (7-10L price range)
2) A 4m 5-door 5-seater version with 1.2L boosterjet engine (9-12L)
3) A 4.3m 5-door 7-seater with the 1.4L boosterjet engine (12-15L)

This is what i like about maruti, they’re quick to respond to market sentiments. I really hope if maruti price it well, jimny/gypsy will be indeed another blockbuster. Also wish they retain the brand name “Gypsy” i mean who doesn’t love the underdog who is out to set things right.

I guess more than the domestic market, Maruti Suzuki will build it for the international RHD markets too where the demand is quite high.

They are starting CKD in Indonesia for the Asean RHD market. So if the same is done (maybe with more localisation) for India, it could cater to not just us locals but also a bunch of RHD markets. - basically the same strategy that FCA uses with Compass exports.
