India-bound 2021 Mercedes E-Class LWB facelift revealed. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 63.60 Lakh

E-class long wheelbase facelift expected to arrive in India in 2021

The Mercedes E class facelift in long-wheelbase form has been revealed at the Beijing Motor Show, about six months after the German brand took the wraps off the standard model.

As India and China are among the only markets where the E-class LWB is sold – and India is the only right-hand drive market for this version – the model for China gives a good idea of what we’re going to get.

E class LWB has a 140mm longer wheelbase than the standard car

Design changes near identical to the standard E-class facelift

2021 Mercedes-Benz E-class long wheelbase exterior differences

As its name implies, the E-class LWB’s wheelbase is 140mm longer than the standard model, which measures in at 2,939mm. The long wheelbase version is also slightly longer overall, but is of the same width and height.

The added length gives it a more traditionally luxurious limousine look, but otherwise, there isn’t too much that differentiates the LWB from the standard E-class facelift.

As we saw when E-class LWB facelift images had emerged online earlier this year, it features the new headlight and bumper design, along with a wider three-slat chrome grille and chrome surrounds on the fog light clusters. Sportier versions of the E-class facelift get a sunken, mesh-like grille with the Mercedes logo in the centre.

At the rear, the standard and long-wheelbase E-class share a new set of slim, wraparound tail-lamps, a new boot lid and a tweaked rear bumper design. New alloy wheel options will help to mark the two apart.

Mercedes claims that rear-seat comfort has also taken a step up, and has added a new rear centre console touchscreen and two USB ports.

Besides these changes, there’s no way to tell the E-class long-wheelbase from the standard model – the updated MBUX software for the infotainment and the new steering wheel are common.

2021 Mercedes-Benz E-class long wheelbase India launch

In April 2020, amid the first lockdown due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Santosh Iyer, vice president, Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz India, had confirmed that the E-class facelift would arrive in India in 2021. Apart from the steering wheel moving to the right side, the India-spec 2021 E-class is expected to be identical to the model revealed for China.

Ewww. This looks ugly. The A Class like diamond look grille looks out of place on the otherwise sleek and understated E. The other car’s snout looks very fish like. Gives it a very Fiat Linea kind of face. This facelift makes us appreciate the current car even more. Merc will be well advised to alter the looks a bit to suit Indian tastes.

Don't you hate it when family comes between good automotive design?

Putting it between the upcoming C-Class and S-Class, you can see why Mercedes did what it did. Isolate it and it all falls apart.

2020 is the year of garish grilles, I guess. Maybe electric cars will the ones to finally shut em up.

re: India-bound 2021 Mercedes E-Class LWB facelift revealed. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 63.60 Lakh

I'm sure that Merc's top execs and management know what they're doing. So I don't mean to sound like an armchair critic, but at least in the mind of someone who's a fan of the three-pointed star, they seem to be losing their way. Let me elaborate:

First off, the polarizing design is very un-Merc IMO. The new S-Class interiors are so "meh". Granted it's got some cool tech, but that's no excuse for a cabin that looks bland compared to the W222. That exterior isn't something to write home about either...

And while to me this E's interior looks more elegant and Merc-like, the exterior leaves a lot to be desired.

Then there's the build quality. So many customers are facing quality issues on their almost-new Mercs. That isn't something you expect when forking out serious dough for a car by a reputed premium brand.

Add their price hikes to the mix (whatever may be the reason), and it really makes it hard to justify getting one, for someone like me anyway...

Curious to know everyone's thoughts on this. Keen to hear a different perspective on this perhaps

Mercedes is trying to become the Hyundai of the luxury segment it seems.

From having understated designs earlier to having such sharp and polarising designs these days.

Talk about the interiors as well they have many gimmicky features and loaded to the brim .

Except for the usable memory function in the front seats which looks like an exclusive feature to Mercedes as they fail to provide it in most of their models.

Just like Hyundai not providing usable features like illuminated window switches and ORVM control switches even though the interiors are loaded to the brim with features.

But their core identity of making quality products is something they are moving away from.

First BMW with those huge grills now Mercedes with these sharp designs I don't know what is going in the minds of the designers for these manufacturers.

re: India-bound 2021 Mercedes E-Class LWB facelift revealed. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 63.60 Lakh

I know that this is just a facelift of the W213, but Mercedes is treating it like a new generation.

A few days back I was looking at a "shorts" in YouTube about the evolution of the E Class uploaded by Mercedes Benz. It showed all the generations from the W124 to the W213. However in case of the W213, they first showed the current version on sale, and then this facelifted version.
Then according to that logic, in the shorts they should have shown both the pre-facelift and facelifted version of the W212, but they didn't do that.

Quite confusing that shorts video was.
Unfortunately, can't post the link since shorts don't have link sharing option.

This new design language may suit the A,B, or C Class but it’s not looking good on the E. This so called “facelift” has lost the charm and stately looks of the pre-facelift E. The same goes for the new S.The current W213 looks much better than this. In fact, makes me appreciate my W212 even more.

You're right, and we can surely term it a failure of Mercedes as a company, both in terms of brand value and QC, any family that doesn't know cars, know two types of cars as far as India is concerned - Maruti and Benz, or Bensss, as most Indians call it.

I'm no stranger to the brand, have sat in the S, shotgun, pressed the center of the fascia and as suspected, creaking and groaning aplenty, same with the C, the A felt like it was a black hole - zero space and you sit low.

Somehow having experienced a few from the "big" 3, my choice in terms of an all-round, no-nonsense car would be Audi, 2nd in line BMW, the Benz, I don't know what its USP is anymore because its ride quality too, isn't as comfortable as before.

What I HATE about Mercedes from the outside is how the headlights are positioned and chosen, every time a Merc crosses my path I feel like I've had lasik surgery done to my eye but not to repair but to blinden, absolute evil stuff. BMW headlamps are subtle, Audis are bad too but not Merc level bad.

For the price, I won't be buying one for sure.. apart from the old reputation it has nothing going for it today, even the designs are a complete mess now, neither looks luxurious nor sporty, just.. no. BTW the S Klasse I sat in had 20 inch wheels or so, horrible ride quality on the melange of sand, pebbles, craters, cement and boulders that Bangalore calls its roads.

Welcome to the world of bling & use and throw. I thought BMW with their horrendous oversized kidney grilles was bad but M-B following in their footsteps is a shame.

Yes, this is the one coming to India only that it will be in LWB guise, the one in the video is the standard wheelbase version.
