Maruti Suzuki Alto: 20 years & 40 lakh sales up!

Maruti Suzuki is celebrating a new sales milestone. The carmaker claims to have sold over 40 lakh units of the Alto.

This year, Maruti is also celebrating 20 years since the launch of the Alto in India. The model was introduced in 2000 and four years later, it became India's best selling car. It has emerged as the largest selling model in the passenger car segment every year since the past 16 years.

By 2008, Maruti had sold 10 lakh units of the Alto. In 2012, Maruti introduced the Alto 800. During the same year, sales crossed the 20 lakh mark. By 2016, 30 lakh units were sold.

According to Maruti, 59% of Alto sales came from upcountry markets. This has now increased to 62% for the current year. The car has been exported to over 40 countries including markets in Latin America, Africa and South Asia.

re: Maruti Suzuki Alto: 20 years & 40 lakh sales up!

Well deserved success. I'm now waiting for the 50 lakh sales milestone, as per current trend and past numbers, it should take 2 more years to achieve this milestone. This is a true successor to the humble Maruti 800.

I drove my friend's Non PS 2006 Alto LX couple of times, the AC is super effective, non-power steering response was also good, it did not feel heavy at all in 20kmph+ speeds. The dream of owning a first new car in budget for many Indians came true by M800 2.5 decades back, from 2000s, Alto is doing that.

If anyone is on a 4 lakh rupees budget for a new car, I'd suggest Alto LXI blindly for it's best in class Engine, A/C, standard driver side Airbag, ABS, vehicle reliability and service.

We changed gaadis from the Alto some time ago and we've ALWAYS missed that car! Always thought it was the perfect city car. The new cars we've had have certainly been easier to drive and safer on the highway, but in the city and while parking I really miss the Alto.

Perhaps, an EV version in the future...

I loved their bright yellow 1.1 l VXi. Kudos to MSIL for the milestone. I think they can do the 50 l mark if the market situation improves.

My brother actually have two Altos. He bought first one while in Assam, which is now at his in-laws place. He bought second one after relocating to Bengaluru. While he has another car here, but still loves to drive Alto within city. I have driven his Alto few times and it's nice to drive within city. Time for Maruti to launch electric Alto to take this journey forward.

re: Maruti Suzuki Alto: 20 years & 40 lakh sales up!

The current gen 2020 Alto looks desirable compared to the previous 2 ones before this. NOT the First and second gen Altos. Hence, this will sell nicely since it also gets the better dashboard from the K10.

The one before this looked like it was terrified with those boring round fog lamps and the one before that looked so boring I wouldn't give a second look to it.

Meanwhile this one looks cool enough. Good in almost all colours. This one also needs AMT like K10 had since S-presso is over 5 lakh for an AMT model.

AMT should also have been optional for base and LX versions I feel.

20 years up for a nameplate still doing fantastic numbers is impressive. But what really stands out to me:

- How much fun the K10 version is to drive! Small, tight, chuckable & fun .

- The Alto at first struggled to take the Maruti 800's place. But Maruti then started giving step-motherly treatment to the 800 and pushed the Alto hard. Strategy v2 was effective.

No, minimum of 4 - 5 years to reach the 50-lakh milestone.

India's Number 1 Selling Car for 17 Years in a row. Alto Crosses 4.1 Million to become Highest EVER.

Quote:
Maruti Suzuki India has sold over41.38 Lakh Alto’s in the past 17 years in the Indian market.

It is India’s first model to cross 40 Lakh units! No other model is even close to this number.

Since launch; Alto has averaged a sale of about 16,786 units per month! Maruti itself hasn’t been able to replicate such success with any other model.

The highest per month volume achieved by the Maruti Alto was 38,065 units! – It achieved this feat in March 2011. It was in the same year (2011), Maruti Alto registered its all-time highest yearly sale of 3,11,367 units. Many OEMs with their entire portfolio have failed to achieve such kinds of volumes.

Maruti became India’s best-selling car in the year 2004; the same year it crossed 1 Lakh unit sales. Since 2004; there isn’t a single year that Alto recorded <1 Lakh unit volumes. Also since 2006; Alto volumes have not dropped below 2 Lakh sales in any year!
