I wish Audi does make a comeback to India. I really don't know what happened to them post 2015 year.
I still have a soft-spot for the brand as my family owned a previous generation A4 and it was our first "new" luxury german car.

Why Audi? Why would you do this to yourself?

It would have been a better decision not to launch this at all! Why tarnish an already not-so-good image when it comes to product positioning and pricing. Looks like nothing was learnt from the Q2 failure. I drive a 2015 Audi Q3 and it feels sad to see the brand just fade away like this.

BMW would be laughing if they still consider Audi a competitor in India.

This car is significantly slower than the M340i and priced 17 lacs more. Go figure!

BMW 340i with its keen pricing set the cat among pigeons. Audi should have picked it up and tried to undercut it by 5-6 lakhs, considering it is slower.
I hope Merc a35 comes with an attractive pricing

Absolutely correct, Audi India is in it's own little fairyland. It's high time VAG takes a control of the situation and gets aggressive with their India 2.0 plan even in the luxury market.

Primarily, I'm a biker, so I have less knowledge of cars, but guys, doesn't CBU mean better construction and assembling?

What I mean is, I understand the recently launched M340i is both more economical and faster than this, but can we substantially conclude that CBU's and CKD's are equal, or roughly equal in build quality and assembling quality?

At least till some years ago, a CBU motorcycle actually meant a better constructed motorcycle than a CKD one, I don't know so much about cars though.

IMO it's arguable.
While one would expect that to be the case, for most premium brands there is minimal (if any) visible difference in overall build quality.
In fact, some companies (such as VWAG) have actually improved reliability by finding local vendors who supply parts built for our conditions (such as the AC which was a pain point in launch year Skoda's & Audi's).
Another point is that often there is a substantial gap between the time of manufacturing & time of sale : for instance, VW imported a bunch of Tiguan All Spaces after the switch to BS6 in 2020 - but a bunch of these vehicles have manufacturing dates of 2019!

IMO, if a premium CKD can reduce prices by 10-15% - it's all the better for the customers!

As far as I know, BMW and MB and even Audi import everything as kits. Engines come separately and are put together at a plant made by Force since 2015. Though the details are not in public, I believe it’s more of a smaller assembly instead of complete assembly or production using local components. This article from 2015 says that BMW sources 50% of components from India but in my opinion, it will be a case of buying components from European companies via their Indian subsidiaries instead of direct imports. So, they will be buying gearbox from ZF India instead of importing directly and ZF will be either importing or assembling, depending on the numbers and tax benefits.

The local assembly has been happening for a while and I haven’t personally seen any case where the engine or transmission of a locally assembled car failed. So it’s safe to expect that we get about the same quality.

But when it comes to the options, CKD usually has restrictions. Like in this case of M340, there’s just one interior option and you cannot order anything optional like the adjustable suspension which you can order on a CBU Audi but not on CKD BMW. It’s also a fact that many CKD models will have a lower grade interior ( leather/ trim) whereas on CBU one can get better leather. But that’s mostly an add on option.

Personally, I still prefer to pick a CBU though!
