Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

Does anyone have a confirmation on timelines for India launch of this facelift? Moreover, is availability of the bumped-up bhp/nm figures in India a done deal or still a speculation?

Just saw this Australian video on their new Fortuner on YouTube - but doesn't specify the 500+ Nm torque - but rather less:

Please open the Australian Toyota Website. All versions of the Fortuner and Hilux have been updated with the new 200hp and 500nm torque specification engines.

On road review is also done by them, this is only the off road part of it.

The 500Nm of torque is mentioned in this video.

Also the thread title should be changed the torque is exactly 500Nm and so 500+Nm can be misleading for some.

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

Great move by toyota should have done this much earlier.Hopefully they do not raise prices too much, but toyota knows even if they do raise prices ,it would still outsell the competition combined together
Ford should have brought the bi turbo endeavour before this, the 2.0 litre engine just doesnt feel as good as the 3.2 on the endeavour and toyota now would lean more ford customers in their favour with this state of tune on the fortuner.

How i miss my fortuner the only time one needed to pop the hood was when it went for service!

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

The launch of the Gloster has stirred up this segment for sure. I just hope Toyota does not jack up the prices materially, which is already sky high in cities like Bangalore.

I think Ford should not be too far behind in bringing in the 2.0 Bi-turbo engine to India, and that is what I'm eagerly waiting for.

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

Is this higher torque purely to look competitive on papers? I always wondered how many owners of Fortuners are purists/enthusiasts.

I feel this extra 50Nm torque will literally go unnoticed for most users reason being -
most Fortuner owners are big politicians/like wise. They are mostly chauffeur driven, especially within city. It's a 10% bump in torque - guess they will just remap it with no real hardware change. For most Fortuner buyers, it's the size, road presence, image that matters more than Nm.

Agree! If Toyota does bring in the higher tune engine - and with Gloster already offering a bi-turbo mill - Ford should bring in theirs as well, unless they are least bothered about the Indian market.

Let's see what the new year brings

Somehow, hearing numbers like 43L-45L-50L as current / speculative prices just doesn't go down well with me!! When did these cars get so expensive!?

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

This reminds me of the Chevrolet Trailblazer launched way back in 2015 with 2.8L turbo diesel which made 197 BHP and 500 nm of Torque!

Outside of the Germans, Diesel engine technology had not evolved fast enough with the Japanese and Americans. Mercedes introduced the same exact power and torque output of 204 HP and 500NM with their OM651 - A 2.2 Diesel liter adorning the C250 CDI in 2011, almost 10 years back.

Today, the replacement is even smaller - The Mercedes OM654 is a 2 litre diesel and is capable of putting out 245HP and 500NM in the C300 CDI AMG! If Toyota were able to achieve the same specific power and torque output, we could have had a 2.8 Diesel Fortuner with 343 HP and 700NM of Torque!

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

The reason for such a long life and reliability of Toyota engines is that they are never tuned to give out maximum power and torque to avoid the stress to engine parts. They are mostly working at about 70 percent of their abilities. That is why we have never seen any engine or turbo failures on Toyota vehicles.

True, I'm sure the 2.8L engine can handle 500 NM torque, I've seen some Innova crystas 2.8L remapped with more than 400 BHP and 600 NM torque,

D-BHPian Shankar tuned his Innova Crysta 2.8 D4D to 567 NM torque and 214 BHP.

Link to his post:

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/offic...ml#post4409136 (Toyota Innova Crysta : Official Review)

also Toyota Supras used to come with 258 BHP to 398 BHP with about 400 NM torque. They are modified / tuned till 2000 BHP, and 1100 NM torque there are many YouTube videos on this too.

So 500 + NM is definitely doable on stock engine without stressing it. It will comfortably take the extra power. My only problem here is, is India equipped with roads handling so much power? Some people are sensible but most people are already driving their Fortuners like maniacs, there are many flying fortuners which you can see in Accidents in India thread frequently.

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

All of you please do a google search. That 2.8L engine with 500nm of Torque has a redesigned cylinder block, changes in the turbo, changes to the piston and rings as well as a changed turbo. So it is not just a remap. Any company be it Toyota or Tata do substantial research in developing any engine and any engine changes.
The Tata 400Nm Varicor had a different cylinder block as well as a different 6 speed gearbox to make that engine reliable.
Similarly Toyota has to take into consideration the reliability factor for the engine when upping the power. With the sheer number of vehicles with that 2.8L engine imagine the financial implications of a recall because of a unreliable engine. Let alone the brand image hit!
