Re: Is it worth buying a premium luxury car in India?

Maybe the question should have been more personal - each one buys a luxury car for his or her own individual reasons and motivations. Also it calls into question how much value each individual puts on say status, luxury, safety, new technology and other points that people have written about. Since our circumstances and feelings etc are very individual there can be no general answer. I can answer about my motivations but I cannot generalize those.

Of course as a poll it does show that the majority of Team-BHP members do not think luxury cars are worth buying in India. Of course one does like to read reviews of luxury cars to see what is new in the world of automobile features and technology. Maybe it points the way towards some editorial directions. However, that is for the management of the site to decide.

Voted Yes - not just in India, anywhere in the world, if you can afford it, why not? And luxury is relative. Someone may consider an S Class as luxury while another think he owns luxury even if he has an A Class.

Is it worth? Yes, if and only if you have more money than to know what to do with and purchase price and repair/maintenance costs are pocket change for you. Otherwise, a big no. And, certainly not if you are someone who buys a luxury car you don't need, with money you don't have, to impress people you don't like AND to impress strangers in parking lots.

Re: Is it worth buying a premium luxury car in India?

The right answer would be yes, because if you have the resources, go for it.

However, I voted no. The reason for this is because the question asks if it's worth buying a premium car in "India". While the roads and traffic aren't great, you can still live with a premium car. However, these cars are outrageously overpriced in India. For example, you spend about 60 L on a new 3 series today. Do you know what you get in that price bracket in the US? A BMW X5!!!! We're being scapegoated by the government and the companies.

To add insult to injury, many features are completely stripped off, eventhough we're paying a much higher premium than our American counter parts. We have to contend with the "trims" that the companies provide instead of getting optionals like in America. It irks me to no end knowing that almost half the price of a vehicle goes to the government, after which we pay horrendous road taxes, AFTER WHICH WE HAVE TO DRIVE ON POTHOLE RIDDEN NON-EXISTENT ROADS.

On top of this, we have the greedy Bengaluru traffic police doing everything except their job. One traffic cop had the audacity to say, " You're driving a TN registered vehicle. It's better you pay 500 and get a receipt and show it if you get stopped again. Then, get a receipt tomorrow again and so on".

Until the Indian premium luxury car consumer wakes to this scam, these cars will not be worth their price. Tell yourself when you buy an X5, "I could be buying a supercar at this price". Then, ask yourself if premium luxury cars are worth their price in "India".

The only way to get around this is if the targeted consumers collectively boycott these vehicles and demand lower taxes, which I doubt will be happening anytime soon since we have much bigger issues to contend with in the political sphere.

Re: Is it worth buying a premium luxury car in India?

The answer really depends on your thought process.

Yes because despite all issues, morals of conspicuous consumption etc. spending that money keeps it circulating, economy going, creating or keeping jobs. If everyone held back and wears khadi kurta we all go poorer. Then our socialists will say we start wearing langotas.

No because you have to live as others do, as far as practicable. Flashy luxury in a largely poor city is invitation to many wrong things. This applies elsewhere too not just third world. For example in Auckland where nearly everyone drive cars that look like junk, you are looked at with bit of awe and lots of ugly looks if you drive around in a Porsche.

There's no point comparing Indian car prices with US. Wanna compare dentist charges? How about comparing with Singapore?! For that 60L you get a cheap Toyota.

Each country decides fiscal policy its own way. Hopefully in our lifetime cars become lower middle class necessity like toothpaste and soap became after urine drinking morons taxed it as luxury.

If you buy luxury remember it's not with today's wealth but will you be wealthy to maintain it? Don't buy a Patek and complain servicing costs more than many new watches!
