Big & centrally placed model badges : Thumbs up or down?

The recent craze in the automotive industry seems to be placing big, bulky model name badges on car rears, like the Alturas G4, MG Gloster, and now even the new Magnite has it, so do smaller cars from lesser segments like the Venue, Aura, NIOS have them not to mention NEXON, T Roc, Harrier and well, almost all new cars, you get my point. Which is why I started this thread.

Even the international cars get these hideous badges. (Palisade, Telluride)

Has this style of model name badge placements grown on any of you? It hasn’t for sure on me. (However, I feel the Nissan Magnite has not overdone it, and has a mostly clean rear that’s why it’s the only one that I feel is kind of okay.)

Anyway, as most manufacturers are following this design, I want opinions of BHPians on whether this appeals to you or not, or do you want a rear with side aligned badges?

One more thing; the earliest cars to have this (in the Indian market) might be the Renault Koleos, Pulse etc. am I right about this?

Voted for depends on the car.

In the pics posted above, Kia and Tata’s execution is classy. VW even more so.

But I’m not a very big fan of the Hyundai execution though. The Venue is still okay, but consider the Grand i10 Nios with that huge, ugly Nios badge at the back.

Even worse is MG’s execution of the badge. Looks completely OTT and not premium at all.

So totally depends on the car.

re: Big & centrally placed model badges : Thumbs up or down?

Great thread buddy.
I am fine with all the cars having big centrally placed badges except for the Glosters'. It looks hideous and completely out of place. MG has overdone the rear of the Gloster with quad exhausts and so many badges.
I would never buy a Gloster and even if I had to, the first thing I would do is to remove those huge 'Gloster' branded lettering at the back.
These are my opinions and this topic can be subjective.
Thanks.

I’ve voted for Depends on the Car.
The badge looks good on Harrier and T-ROC, the latter one especially looks classy (think this is because it is a short name).

I have voted for "it depends". My Creta also has the new central lettering-quite frankly, I never even noticed it much. However, the Gloster lettering looks absolutely hideous.

re: Big & centrally placed model badges : Thumbs up or down?

For me its more about the placement ,font and the size of the badge.

Eg:
The placement , font and size of the Telluride badge above the license plate is perfect.

The size, font and placement of the t-roc badge is perfect.

However the font and size of the Aura badge is not perfect. The badge would have
looked better if it was in a smaller size and different font style.

But at the end people's opinions on looks are different. That's all.

Voted for "Depends on the car". The execution is perfect on Harrier. It goes so well with the rear styling. T-Roc too looks good due to the small name. Rest all look hideous.

Voted - Depends on the car.

For me, this is completely up to the execution of the brand.

I find Harrier, T-Roc and Venue to be well designed and executed.

Where Gloster and Alturas G4 to be an absolute design failure.

I voted for depends on the car.

From the given pictures it looked the best on the VW T-ROC and the Harrier.
The others were bad with the Gloster at loss for words by me to describe it.

My personal favorite !

Voted 'Depends'. Was about to say 'no, thanks' when I saw the Harrier. The ones on Aura, Venue, Telluride and Gloster are straight up awful. The first two have badges that look too big, the last two... are just terrible.

T-Roc's one reminds me of the Tiago actually, and is not bad either. Doesn't pull off this badging the way Harrier does though.

Voted Nay
Wanted to vote for "Depends on the car", but again. Looking at the Range Rover, some things start out classy, yet end up as a fugly fad.
Example : dot type LED DRLs

Almost as if they know that the market is saturated, and to the layman, most are generically styled.
So it's like grabbing them by the collar and saying,
"see..see...this is V E N U E..."
Or
"Don't say badi gaadi or MG ka Phorthuner...
it is G L O S T E R"

But anyday better than engraving the model name in a thick bar of chrome boot handle.

Though growing up, watching these...am like "meh.. whateva".

And for Toyota's "Any publicity is good publicity"

Again, manufacturers' name in bold doesn't seem bad. Especially legacy ones. Popularised recently by Ford and Dodge.

Specific model names? Nah, looks too aftermarketish.

re: Big & centrally placed model badges : Thumbs up or down?

It surely depends on the car and I say the lifetime of a brand/car in a particular market. While I agree a Gloster looks hideous with that G L O S T E R badging, it works wonders for brand recall. I know VW did that (in much subdued manner) early on while now cars just say VW.

The big Toyota written on the Hilux is surely to say, I own this territory. So it all depends on the brand or car.

Also, in the face marketing is becoming an in thing now and many products follow that route. In this era of shortlived attention and competition, such hedious marketing attempts get approved very easily.

Would I like to have one on my car. No!
I hate when people copy the LandRover style lettering on the bonnet lip and put it on puny cars.

re: Big & centrally placed model badges : Thumbs up or down?

Looks good on cars like the Harrier, so have voted for the 3rd option. Small cars should have their names small on one side of the boot lid, Aura doesn't look good IMHO. Gloster looks hideous literally like "shouting".

Have voted for Depends.

The Gloster is a big no for me! I guess more than the overall car it’s the excessive unnecessarily badging that has put people off.

But at the same time there are plenty classy ones like the T-Roc (the best out of the OP pictures) followed by the Harrier and even Skoda’s full name on the bootlids.
