re: Maruti planning new crossover based on the Baleno. EDIT: Launches "FRONX"!

The fact that this is based on Baleno's Heart-attack platform is not a good news.

Maruti should take safety seriously and start producing 5* GNCAP cars and not keep producing cars on unsafe platform. I hope someone from Maruti reads this and starts taking things seriously.

How do you ascertain that the Baleno is unsafe and Maruti is not working on safer cars?

Firstly, Heartect is not a platform, it is a philosophy that is used only for marketing.

Secondly, the S-Presso with Dual Airbags and seatbelt pretensioners scored higher than Seltos-Creta at NCAP, the Ertiga has 3 and 4 star crash test ratings at GNCAP and ASEAN NCAP respectively, India-made Baleno tested by Latin NCAP had scored a 4-star Global NCAP equivalent performance and they have improved it further, and the WagonR with dual airbags is also worthy of 3 stars.

Hence, it does baffle me quite a lot when anyone states that a car has to be unsafe just because it is a Heartect!

Talking about the Baleno being a "Heart-attack" and "unsafe", the India-spec Baleno was never crash test so I do not see any reason why you would call it that except for personal perception, biasness etc!

Mod Note: Let's not needlessly assume a car is unsafe until tested, please. As an example, models like the Etios, Vitara Brezza, Magnite etc. fared better than any of us expected. Thanks for the support & understanding

Piggybacking on what is mostly a Suzuki vehicle for a Creta rival, but bringing in the Yaris Cross for a smaller segment? Would love to be proved wrong, but fat chance.

With design inspired from Maruti Suzuki’s Futuro e concept, the YTB could either be built on the same Heartect platform as the 2022 facelifted Baleno or share the platform with Toyota.

Maruti Suzuki might also reintroduce the 1-litre Booster Jet turbo engine on the car. It will be reportedly manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant and sold via the premium Nexa dealerships.

Toyota Yaris Cross being tested in parallel to Baleno Cross.

What is the surprise in store, from Toyota -Suzuki duo?

Component testing doesn't need Yaris Cross to be camouflaged.

re: Maruti planning new crossover based on the Baleno. EDIT: Launches "FRONX"!

Is Yaris Cross based CUV, Toyota's next launch for India?

We have been seeing the YTB and the camouflaged Yaris Cross on various spy shots for a very long time.
It is very clear this CUV will have another collaborative launch from Suzuki- Toyota.

Strong Hybrid, Suzuki's 1.0L turbo engine, Toyota's platform is many of the speculations as of now.

If it is the Yaris Cross based coupe SUVs that both companies will launch, then it is going to be longer than 4m. International-spec Yaris Cross measures 4,200mm in length, 1,765mm in width, 1,590mm in height and has a 2,560mm wheelbase. It is based on Toyota’s global TNGA platform.
For India, it might be based on a cheaper and smaller DNGA-A platform that Toyota got access from Daihatsu which has a wheelbase of 2,525mm. Vehicles based on this platform like Daihatsu Rocky, Toyota Raize and Peroduva Ativa are all under 4m in length. Powering the Maruti Baleno Cross will be a 3 cylinder 1 liter turbo petrol engine to deliver peppier performance.

re: Maruti planning new crossover based on the Baleno. EDIT: Launches "FRONX"!

The whole point of creating the Baleno Cross is to introduce a proper sub-4 metre crossover (the Brezza isn't eligible due to the larger engine), and adding a new product without hefty investment. Even if there will be a Toyota version I doubt they're giving TNGA/DNGA to a product that is supposed to be as similar as possible to the Baleno, because that defeats the whole point.

re: Maruti planning new crossover based on the Baleno. EDIT: Launches "FRONX"!

The Baleno Cross is just a jacked up Baleno. It doesn't have anything to do with the Yaris Cross, which is a completely different product. Hoping to see Toyota bring in the Yaris Cross as a replacement for their Urban Cruiser.

Maruti Baleno Cross to get 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine.

- 1.0-litre BoosterJet could get mild-hybrid tech

- Automatic gearbox duties will most likely be performed by a six-speed TC unit.

- Will go on sale in February 2023

Quote:
Maruti Suzuki will most likely offer a naturally aspirated petrol engine as well, which could either be the 1.2-litre DualJet seen on the Baleno

Absolutely agree with this point, best to proclaim a car unsafe or safe, only with a test rating. However, I guess we should just let others have their own perception. No point trying to change it much. Afterall, the Alto wasn't tested for many years - but the owners could easily guess how safe it really was .

Maruti (Suzuki) even with its flaws and cost cuts - is a proven engineering house & knows what it is doing quite well, especially with the Indian market in its sight. I'm sure Maruti reads what the public now thinks about safety & upcoming cars surely will try to cover those bases.

This though, is not right. Maruti Suzuki officially addresses this as a full fledged platform, with generations.

Link - Maruti Suzuki Heartect Platform Page

In fact - not just MSIL, the Heartect platform is a regularly used platform for various domestic market cars for Suzuki as well.
Suzuki Heartect Platform
Suzuki globally sells products officially with the name of the Heartect platform in technical specifications. Not just in India. Of course - every platform name afterall is linked with Marketing purpuses. But - this is a platform, no doubt about that in the mind of Suzuki.

Back on topic - I don't quite understand where the Baleno Cross will sit to be honest. I think our market has sufficient examples of similar attempts, all of which failed miserably (and am I glad about that!)
  1. Cross Polo
  2. Etios Cross
  3. i20 Active
  4. WR-V (after the initial rush)

The crossover on tests again:

Quote:
As Maruti is expected to equip this crossover with a 1.0-litre BoosterJet turbo petrol motor. Users can expect more responsive driving dynamics with this new motor in comparison to the 1.5-litre NA petrol motor in use with Brezza. Baleno SUV Cross will have both manual and automatic transmission options.

re: Maruti planning new crossover based on the Baleno. EDIT: Launches "FRONX"!

I am really curious about how this car will be positioned. Will it replace S-cross? Because Maruti already has Brezza and Grand Vitara on either spectrum. I also read some news about the new S-cross also making its way to India.

Spotted it yesterday, It frankly looks like a Grand Vitara went into the copier and set to size “Baleno” .
