re: Maruti planning new crossover based on the Baleno. EDIT: Launches "FRONX"!

More spy shots of the upcoming CUV from Maruti Suzuki:

Would Maruti Suzuki's upcoming 'YTB' get the ZEN Moniker or will it be 'Baleno Cross'?

Quote:
The spy shots of the Baleno-based SUV coupe reveal split LED headlamps and Maruti’s signature grille for its Nexa models. Like the upcoming Grand Vitara, expect the new SUV coupe to feature 3-pot LED DRLs. The spy shots also reveal the sloping roofline of the upcoming Baleno Cross coupe-SUV.
The YTB is likely to rival Tata Punch, Citroen C3, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.

re: Maruti planning new crossover based on the Baleno. EDIT: Launches "FRONX"!

If they offer 1.5l engine, it will attract higher taxes hence it is not an option?

The question is how safe would this car be? New Baleno hasn't been tested by gncap yet!

Maruti Suzuki do not have a history of sending cars voluntarily for crash testing. Even the new Baleno is not crash tested yet. Anxiety would remain if the reports of this car based on Heartect platform is true, unless the car is actually crash tested. Whereas the newer SUV's from Maruti Suzuki are based on proven Global C platform, surprising why Heartect platform was chosen for this car ! This would be the one main reason why someone with safety priority would opt for Brezza until this car is also tested.

re: Maruti planning new crossover based on the Baleno. EDIT: Launches "FRONX"!

As per the new GNCAP norms, and if I look at previous Baleno scores, and the competition, I think a 3 star would be minimum. May even be 4 star for all we know. But 5 star does not seem to be Suzuki target. But then GNCAP has funny scoring methods and you get points for equipment as well. So, I guess we will have to wait for the test results post launch.

Which result did you use to arrive at this estimate?

There is no independent 64km/h ODB result for an RHD Baleno (either generation) worldwide and as for the side barrier impact, the only one without side airbags was in Latin NCAP where rib deflection values from the dummy corresponded to an alarmingly high risk of serious rib fracture, leading to 0 points in the side impact. In that case the result would be 0 or 1 star for the old Baleno even with the new GNCAP protocols which are less demanding than Latin NCAP.

So unless Suzuki have made changes to the side impact performance for the base variant without side airbags (for example a pelvis pusher to unrealistically reduce chest loads or other such 'cheat devices' which the GNCAP penalises only slightly) it is very hard to determine how the new Baleno would perform, although since it has a Toyota twin and is a NEXA product I would be surprised at less than four stars for such a new model although that would mean Suzuki having to submit data from an in-house side pole crash (if not sponsor an official test), and in that case the GNCAP might have better luck testing the Toyota Glanza/Starlet.

This would be a cheaper car and hence a cheaper platform was chosen.

Brezza has a good platform, however the engine and Auto transmission performance is sub-par! Now to talk about interioirs

Don't go by that estimate. Yaris scored single star in Latin NCAP. So they are no saints either.

The Yaris facelift was already a few years old by the time of the Latin NCAP reassessment with their new 2020 protocols which are still broader than the new GNCAP protocols. On the other hand the new Glanza was launched months after the GNCAP had already announced their new 2022 protocols in July 2021.

In the original 2019 Latin NCAP test sponsored by Toyota soon after launch, the Yaris had achieved four stars for adult and child protection against the protocols in force at the time (see press release) although this 2019 rating was later downgraded to three stars after the passenger seatbelt reminder showed partial failure during subsequent 2021 audit testing.

But yes I agree that there is no hard-and-fast rule that a Toyota badge implies a good safety rating. It's best to wait for the GNCAP to publish official results.

The Baleno was tested under the aegis of Euro NCAP in 2016. I make the basic summary based on the same and looking at the competition and Suzuki's absolute disregard for GNCAP.

This is the GV. It is much bigger than the YTB. The rear combination lights are a giveaway.

Could be the Grand Vitara with 1.4l boosterjet engine?

Ooh!!!

That is one major hole left in the Grand Vitara/Hyryder's lineup.

With that it would have one of the most comprehensive variant spead out there.

re: Maruti planning new crossover based on the Baleno. EDIT: Launches "FRONX"!

Spy shot of another MS model caught testing in Gurgaon which seems to be a part of the line-up. Note the typical MS ORVMs. Could this be the new Swift? From the dimensions didn't seem to be a crossover. Looks more like a hatchback.
