Nissan India launches Teana luxury sedan
Teana is Nissan’s second model to be launched in India
New Delhi (April 19, 2007) – Nissan Motor India Private Limited today announced the launch of its luxury sedan, the Teana, in India. Teana is the second model to be launched in India following the launch of the X-TRAIL SUV in 2004 and marks the next step in Nissan’s expansion into this fast growing market. In March of this year, Nissan announced its intention to set up a manufacturing facility in Chennai together with Alliance partner Renault and local manufacturer, Mahindra.
Ms. Yoshie Motohiro, Managing Director, Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd. said, “When we decided to launch our second vehicle we wanted to take advantage of the growing luxury segment. Our research showed that the Indian customers’ expectation of a luxury vehicle matches what Teana offers. We are confident that the Nissan Teana will meet the demand of the Indian customers and that the people here will love this sedan.”
The vehicle will be fully imported from Nissan’s Kyushu Plant in Japan and is priced at Ex Showroom price of Rs. 2,047,000- at Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad and Rs. 2,067,000- at Mumbai.
The Teana was created around the concept of “Comfort and Relaxation”. Teana combines refined, modern design with a smooth, powerful V6 engine.
The Teana’s powerful exterior styling starts with a front end design that blends a distinctive chrome grille, high quality headlamps and integrated fog lamps.
On the inside, Teana offers a finely crafted interior that is clean, modern yet luxurious”. With broad sections of high quality wood trim, easy to operate controls and leather trim, Teana delivers on the promise of comfort and relaxation. Thanks to a long wheelbase, Teana also delivers extra comfort for all passengers.
From a safety and convenience standpoint, Teana comes with innovative and convenient features such as the intelligent lock system, which allows the owner to open and close the vehicle and start the ignition without removing the key from their pocket or bag.
Teana is powered by a 2.3 litre VQ23DE petrol engine mated to a four speed automatic transmission. The VQ23DE engine produces max power of 125kw (170ps) and torque of 224N.m (22.8kgm). Nissan’s VQ23DE engine is part of the VQ engine series, which has been recognized as one of the “Ten Best Engines” by Ward’s Auto World magazine for 13 years in a row.
Commenting on the introduction of Teana in India, Mr. Masaru Arimitsu, Chief Product Specialist, Nissan Motor Company Limited said “Keeping in mind the Indian road conditions, and the needs of consumers, we have made changes to the Teana’s interior and exterior. The seats of the car have been changed from suede to leather, there is a visible dual exhaust pipe and the ride height has been raised by 10mm. Nissan has used its triple safety philosophy in this vehicle with information safety, control safety and impact safety factors being taken into consideration for the Indian Teana.”
Mr. Neeraj Garg, Director Sales and Marketing, Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd further adds “Our objective for introducing Nissan Teana in the market is to bring in choice amongst Nissan Vehicles for customers, provide a value for money option in the luxury car segment in India and support profitability for dealers.”
The Teana will go on sale from this month.

Seems like this is going to go the X-TRAIL way. Decent vehicle but no volumes......Surely Nissan could have come up with more saleable models in the Octavia, Civic, Corolla range, IF they wanted to taste success in numbers.....

Cheers

Definetly better value than Camry. V6 engine and bigger car for less money. I say the list of imported cars in India is growing.

Why are all these manufacturers fighting for a few hundred vehicles sold per month across the country instead of addressing the C segment and below that bring in the numbers? My theory is that they want to start in the snob value segment - build some of this halo effect and then pretend to bring this to the masses. The CEO of nissan and Renaunt is pursuing two drastically different strategies across the two companies - starting with the low cost option on one hand with joint manufacturing with a lot of localization and on the other hand pure imports in the D+ segment..

Spot on, Nissan used this strategy in China then brought in the Sentra etc. To compete in the C segment, one needs to localise and manufacture here. This buys them time to build the network and complete development aspects etc.

nissan shud bring in the sentra in the C-segment (optra, cedia, corolla, civic) and the new versa in the B-segment(u-va, swift, getz). also they shud bring in the pathfinder/murano in the SUV segment (shud price it around the range the x-trail is being sold at) x-trail is a brilliant mini-suv. they shud price it competitively(around the CRV/ Tucson range) to bring in sum good numbers. the indian market is ready for a successful company like nissan to have a full line-up or these teriffic vehicles.

Good Luck Nissan. We Believe in You.

Probably they are following Pareto's 80/20 rule They are targetting a very niche market where profit margin is high, rather than diving into mass market which is risky if they can't recover their investment.

This Nissan goes by the name of Cefiro in SEA. I have driven this and the feel is definitely better than a Camry

Wonder why they chose to re-brand it for India.. To me, Cefiro sounds better than Teana..

A nice car to compete with Camry. But the latter possess a lot of respect in this part of the world.

Teana, Laura, Liana, Linea, Sonia What is with all these girly names?? Cefiro aounds a bit too good to me. But won't suit the Indian car market I think. And so the reason for a rename.

My take on this is: Probably Nissan is thinking to build a brand image which could of a luxuries brand.. Then the agreement with Suzuki did not go well so it took time for them to go and get Renault and Mahindra with them.. Now the time they get some brand image (Though I did not see them getting any here), they would be able to bring out small cars with the help of other 2.

I wonder why no one from T-BHP forum has done a test drive of this car yet ? Even in CBU, this can prove good competition for the Superb/Camry etc.

I wonder what Teana would cost if bought in as SKD.

Read somewhere that Leela or some big hotel had bought 10 of these vehicles already.
Seems it will be a big hit with fleet car buyers.

IMHO, the Teana is one of the few cars perfect for Indians.
Most Indians who want a D Segment cars are chauffuer driven and none of the cars except the Superb and Camry seem to offer good luxury in the back seat.
That was till the Teana came about.
This will be an interesting fight. Lets see who wins.
