Nissan to roll out Teana EDIT: Now launched

Japanese auto major Nissan is poised to launch its premium sedan Teana in India next week, industry sources said.
The car, whose price is expected to be in the range of Rs 19-28 lakh, will be available as a completely built unit and compete with Toyota's Camry, Skoda Superb, Mercedes C-Class and the BMW 3-series.
"Nissan India hasn't said anything about the price of the product, but we are expecting it to start from Rs 19 lakh as it is a direct import," a Nissan dealer said. The company had recently signed a joint venture agreement with Renault and Indian automaker Mahindra and Mahindra for setting up a manufacturing plant in Chennai where it will have a 25 per cent stake. While Renault will own 25 per cent, M&M will own the rest 50 per cent.
The JV had proposed an investment of Rs 4,000 crore (Rs 40 billion) in the facility for a greenfield plant with a capacity of 4,00,000 units in phase I. The company will be rolling out compact cars for the Indian market from the Chennai plant, which expected to be commissioned by 2009.
Nissan India director (marketing and sales) Neeraj Garg said the company will use its own independent sales network for marketing its products in India and ruled out tie-ups with other companies.
Nissan had also entered into an agreement with Maruti Suzuki for contract manufacturing 50,000 units of compact cars a year for exports to the European market. Currently, it sells SUV X-Trail in India.

That means when it is produced in india they could price it below 13 lakhs for the entry level. Only then they could penetrate deep into indian market, otherwise it will end like x trail.

Interesting to see how the logan launch generates a 20+ page thread. And the Teana has 3 replies in 24 hours. Just goes to show the market relevance. And lack of relevance = lack of interest.

Nissan really didnt set any sales charts on fire when they came in with the X Trail. Sales were mostly from fleet buyers. About the Teana, I see it as a another option for hotel fleets buyers who till now bought just Camrys. Now they have an aleternative as the car might work out cheap in EPCG.

Also the recent BMW entry into India has kind of sidelined the teana.Dont think Nissan has the snob value to compete with bmw and mercedes in India.

IMO with the launch of Teana(sounds like a little girl in one of those cartoon shows) , Nissan just wants to keep its presence alive in view of the fact that there hasn't been any launch since X-Trail. Maybe this is just the run-up to the gradual inroads into the Indian car scene, and to introduce cars which are more relevant here.

Well, like it was pointed out, if someone is going to be shelling out 20L, it BETTER have snob value. Nissan has quite a few great cars, i wonder why they bring out sch cars into the country. Damn those market researchers!

If Nissan wants to come into India in that segment - why not come in with the altima, maxima etc brands - from the specs that autocar gave of this car it is a generation old car ( its a v6 but with a very poor bhp output - which means it is essentially using v6s such as GM and Ford use for their rental fleet cars like impala etc.)

Nice...really nice... but i feel it could at least have a 3L engine.... and boy wouldn't it look HOT in black?

But somehow the lines and curves on the front are similar to the new Merc S class IMHO.
