Re: Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?

Nice thread. Here's one from my side:
Tata seems to be taking inspiration from Volvo.

Tata's new design language:
Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?-unnamed.jpg

Volvo's design:
Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?-volvorollsoutnew5axledumptruckforminingapps1.jpg

Tata's older design:
Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?-tatatippertruck500x500.jpg

***------***

Copycat is defined as an intentional copy by a company which knows they can't beat the original product, but can make an identical-looking copy with lesser ability & engineering finesse to be sold at a lower price. Mahindra Thar is the only recent launch that would qualify as a copycat. It is a wanna-be Jeep wrangler, at a much lower price. Fits into this thread: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/inter...d-chinese.html (Car Designs copied by the Chinese). Copycat can sometimes invite lawsuits

Anybody can take Inspiration and incorporate certain distinctive design elements into their products. A good example is Ford using the Aston Martin styled grille where the rest of the car has an original design.

These examples are licensed for production. HM & Force have not developed these designs from ground-up to imitate the Morris or Mercedes vehicles. Being rebadged versions of the international vehicles, IMHO they don't belong to this thread. Same with Royal Enfields.

Re: Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?

I don't know if there is a threshold between being called a copycat vs being a follower of a trend. The big names stop just short of copying each other or the trendsetter (in any industry) and instead morph their designs in line with the latest trends. This is most obvious in the fashion world. The lesser brands will make a knockoff of the original. Chrysler and Ford even used to compare one of their cars with a Mercedes in ads! (I'm sure many other automakers did the same).
Talking of trends, you'll see all cars morph to a homogeneous shape, especially in certain markets; till a trendsetter starts another new trend of course! The good thing about India is that you will see the full gamut of designs over decades at any time. Some of trends will be skipped in India if it does not agree with the general sensibilities of the population - a few cars were market failures just based on their looks.
So, my point is - there's no such thing as a design ripoff, it is just evolution!

And Shutterstock even has an icon set representing the trends here:

Tata`s new design language is inherited from Daewoo Trucks which they acquired in 2004.

Beg to differ. The Prima doesn't have any semblance to the Volvo. You could lookup designs of any Euro truck from the house of Scania, Volvo, Man, Renault, Mercedes, Iveco, etc and most would appear similar in form and structure. Styling and details are quite different.

Let's not ignore the elephant in the room. The company which is pioneer in copying, Hyundai.

Here is the latest. Speedo console design rip off from BMWs.

Re: Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?

I suspect the main reason for the breakup of the Mahindra Ford JV would have been the new Thar.

The way Mahindra blatantly violated Jeep’s copyright design YET AGAIN after being hauled up earlier by the US courts would have made Ford management decide to distance itself from Mahindra.

Re: Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?

How can we forget the 1st gen SOnata VS the C-CLass, back in the 2000s.

Those were the days when Sonata entirely resembled the C-CLass, and IIRC, Mercedes also slapped a fine on Hyundai for design copy.

Guess who am i? And who's the boss?

Not a rip off, but these American pony cars are getting indistinguishable day by day.

On top of this, it is Team-BHP car of the year. Just let that sink in! I was expecting this community to strongly oppose this blatant copy-paste, but it proved to be otherwise.

By this logic, everyone is copying each other. This is not copying per say, it is out of compulsion of drag resistance, the cabin layout will be almost same.

I believe plagiarism exists in every industry and Automobile industry is no different. Since this is a subjective thread, my opinions are likely to be different from yours.

Re: Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?

I think the sedan design outlook has reached its zenith. Car designers have been doling out different shapes of sedans for more than 100 years, there must be a limit to adding newer aspects to the shape of a sedan.

I mean how much more can they change on the front or back. How much lining or curves can they add or remove in a side profile, there is bound to be over lapse of similar designs from different manufacturers. Exceptional shapes can only be expected from a team of geniuses and it will only happen less often as more years roll by.

However there is a lot of scope of creativity on SUV designs, i think radical new shapes will be seen on SUVs in coming years. Gradually automotive designs will become more like fashion, where trends change every few years, and older themes get repeated. The sudden interest of people in retro classic is indicative of such changes.

Not much of an India example as the new polo is not yet launched in India but the old and new polo both resemble the Q2 rear lights I think.

Don't think this would qualify as copying. I mean, they're both essentially under the same company...
