The Mini Cooper and Swift ?

The design looks so much similar from this angle.

Then the Rhino looked inspired from the Qualis ?

re: Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?

The Contessa and the ambassador were not copied from the originals. They ARE the originals, in the sense that they licenced the design of the Morris Oxford and Vauxhall Victor for production in India. As did Standard automobiles for the Herald and 2000 (Originally the Rover SD1).

With anything creative, you only a finite number of ways of creating things, stories, music, food, etc. before it all starts looking inspired by something else. Take tail lamps, for example: it's hard to be very original when they need to conform to regulations, market preferences, current trends, strict cost targets, etc.

Honda copying BMW tail lights isn't new. In fact when we had gone to check out the Mobilio back in 2014, the SA proudly told us that the lights are like that of a X1

Re: Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?

Few things that come to my mind are

1. Thar with Jeep
2. Verna/Elantra with Audi
3. S cross with old X1

And then some older cars
4. Swift with mini ( reason why I bought)
5. Rhino with Qualis ( perhaps only example where someone copied an ugly duckling)

We will definitely have many more examples if talking about specific design elements eg: volvo rear lights on Ertiga/Jazz/WRV etc.

Exactly. Although the Thar is a really good and safe SUV in the time of FWD pseudo SUVs we can't ignore the fact that Mahindra opted the easy way out ( atleast the designing department ) by taking "heavy inspiration" from Jeep Wrangler.

Glad to see Toyota not being mentioned here - There current designs are so awful that it really needs a B-A-D inspiration.

I think my top contender would be how Mahindra mercilessly ripped the G-Class for their Bolero. I think for this no pictures are needed

Force Motors copying Mercedes Benz isn't a new thing, they've been doing it since forever.

Re: Design rip-offs in India : Copycats or Inspired?

It is not a copycat, force motors have license to manufacture old Mercedes designs after buying out dies from source manufacturer. They even have license to manufacture older mercedes engines which are phased out in Europe , but engines can run in indian legislation.
