The MG Hector CVT Automatic, now launched at Rs. 16.52 lakh

MG introduced the updated Hector in India last month. Now, we have been told that the SUV is likely to get a CVT automatic variant soon.

The Hector CVT could be launched as early as next week. Curiously, the Hector will continue to be offered with the DCT, which we found to be quite mediocre and we hope that the CVT is more competent. We're pretty sure it will be butter-smooth though, as all CVTs are.

Moreover, MG is likely to offer the CVT with the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine only. This motor produces 141 BHP and 250 Nm.

Thanks to the Team-BHP fan (he prefers to remain anonymous) who sent this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP share page!

MG knows how to stay in the news! Month after month some update and they are back in the news. Hope other manufacturers also learn this (especially Toyota!)

Coming back to the topic, I guess owners were unhappy with the DCT’s mileage so a CVT is also being brought in alongside. Makes sense actually, customers can choose the gearbox they prefer more. Fast-shifting DCT or a smooth CVT.

Also high time they offer a diesel automatic as well!

What the Hector needs is a Diesel Automatic instead of updates to it's guzzling petrol variant. Why are they dragging their feet on this very important up date?? As though a CVT is going to make a day and night difference when it comes to fuel efficiency?!

A petrol CVT is very welcome, especially in the NCR region where diesel is no longer an obvious option.

You can say that again! And with merely 3 products on sale. Just see the number of news articles we ourselves have on MG.

Truly. When we got the scoop, the first thing we did was ask whether it was for the diesel. Sadly not the case.

Not FE, but the DCT is overall quite sad. If the CVT is smooth and responsive like what we see in the latest Honda's, it will be worth the effort. In the longer run, the CVT will also be more reliable & cost lesser to maintain. Lastly, the CVT will be cheaper to build & sell.

Hmmn, I wonder if it is worth waiting for the CVT. I'm asking on behalf of a relative who is looking at the Hector. We took a short test drive of the DCT (he wants a petrol automatic only), and while it is nothing to write about, it was good enough for the kind of driving he does (low usage, mostly city trips, two or three highway/long drives a year).

Creta was quickly ruled out (no interest in selling it, no demo/test drive cars available, waiting period of 10-11 months). The other option is the Seltos GTX+ DCT: everything looks good for this but the waiting periods are high (16-20 weeks or more).

Any insights/advice would be appreciated.

I think the Hector is not quite a "city" car in terms of its size , general manouverability-if someone has requirements for 90 % city usage, there are other options that can fit the profile like the Seltos or even sub 4m models. Atleast the Seltos is a "known devil" with respect to GNCAP scores vs the unknown factor for others (if your relative cares at all).

MG Hector petrol CVT to launch on February 11, 2021

Quote:
Price announcement for the Hector petrol CVT will take place on February 11, 2021. The model will be based on the recently facelifted Hector that made its debut last month in India.

The CVT gearbox option will be sold alongside the DCT Variant. The top two variants of the Hector, Super and Sharp, will be available with a CVT gearbox.

We are told that the Hector CVT petrol will be around Rs 50,000-60,000 lower than the DCT-equipped variant. More details are expected to be revealed in the coming days. Additonally, CVT gearbox is expected to be more fuel-efficient too and will be smoother than DCT. When launched, the Hector petrol CVT will be the first vehicle in its category to offer two automatic gearboxes in the same market.

re: The MG Hector CVT Automatic, now launched at Rs. 16.52 lakh

If midrange torque of the Turbo petrol engine can take care of the rubber band effect (as it is seen in case of Magnite), then CVT can be a decent option too !

Other benefits :
1. Better F.E.
2. Reliability

It's an 8-speed CVT with Eco and Sports mode. MG says that the 2 Pulleys and belt systems makes the shifts smoother.

Looks like it'll come with EPB and Auto-Hold as well. Bummer that it is priced exactly the same as DCT.

Its possible that MG can demonstrate higher fuel efficiency in the CVT model, and the DCT may be discontinued eventually.

re: The MG Hector CVT Automatic, now launched at Rs. 16.52 lakh

CVT will have 2 pulleys as usual and this one may have 8 simulated shift points although the point of this style transmission is to keep the engine in its most efficient speed - Continuously variable!!

I Hope the CVT is tough enough to handle the weight of Hector + 7 passengers and luggage, its usually seen on lighter vehicles.

EDIT : Happened to see the launch video on the related thread, the 7 seater does not get any automatic at all.

re: The MG Hector CVT Automatic, now launched at Rs. 16.52 lakh

MG has mastered the art of staying in the news, with some incremental update, month after month.

The CVT could have been launched with the facelift, but keeping a seperate event a month later ensures that the car continues to stay in the news.

Also makes the company seem receptive to the feedback, as I'm sure the CVT will be touted as the mileage friendly option.

I'm sure they'll be watching the numbers for Harrier/safari closely and when the time is right, plonk an auto transmission for the diesel.

re: The MG Hector CVT Automatic, now launched at Rs. 16.52 lakh

CVT is priced at par with the DCT variants. MG is definitely charging a premium, CVT should have been priced at least 50K less.

I really doubt that at this price point it's going to bring additional sales. Diesel Auto is what MG should focus on.
