January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

I think Tata has slowly crawled its way back into consumer consciousness. My colony - about 80 homes - had no Tata car since 2012. My safari was the last. In the last 6 months, i have noticed 3 new Tata cars around - 2 Nexons ( the front looks just amazing) and a Harrier.

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thank you friendly-mod Aditya. Few thoughts:

Even though Creta and Seltos are the same car, Hyundai’s brand and the quirky design seems to be hitting it off better with the market.

Skoda’s shock and awe strategy with Rapid seems to be fading off. Their current models are not bringing in the numbers, let’s see if the new launches can do some magic.

Disappointing dispatch numbers for the Magnite considering the hype. Supply side constraint? Just for comparison, Triber dispatches are higher than Magnite.

So happy to see Nexon’s succes. This is my favourite mass market car under 10 lacs for the time being. Tata is now a turn-around story. They have all the momentum right now. Good sales, healthy product line-up, Nexon EV show-cased in the Republic Day parade, zooming stock price. Well done Tata!

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Here is how the OEM's fared in retail vs Wholesale.

- Maruti Suzuki leads the pack with inventory at dealers being an all time low.

- With about 3 lakhs wholesale the retails are close with about 2.6 lakh numbers. Which indicates, that the cars are being manufactured to cater to an existing prevalent demand.

- Kia has done better than Mahindra on the retail estimate front. Whereas Mahindra has done better on the wholesale front. Hence, the rankings are interchanged for wholesale and retail.

- The difference between wholesale and retail, indicates most of the OEM have managed to build some inventory for their dealers.

- Retail numbers do not have figures from AP, MP, LD & TS states.

Jan-21, sales analysis:

Encouraging sales as the auto industry records growth in six month succession. After a 19.6% YoY growth in Aug 31.14% growth in Sep’20 17.5% growth in Oct’20, 8.8% growth in Nov’20 and 18% growth in Dec’20 – the industry has registered almost 16% YoY growth in Jan’21.

On another positive note most segments now have a waiting period of ~ 2- 9 months as demand outstrips supply.
Also note that the Industry crossed 3 Lakh unit dispatches after 3 months. The Industry recorded >3 Lakh units wholesale volumes only once (Oct’20) in the entire Calendar Year 2020!

Highlights of Jan-21 dispatch figures:
-Maruti Suzuki’s inventory at dealers reach a new low. Retails ~ 95+% of the wholesome units.
-Only 2 OEMs had their offerings in the Top 10 list – Maruti & Hyundai.
-Maruti Suzuki’s Alto was the nation’s best-selling model Creta was the highest selling Hyundai for January 2021.
-There was only 1 Sedan (Dzire) in the top 10 selling cars.
-Top 10 cars include 5 hatchbacks, 3 SUVs & 1 Van too.
-10 out of Top 25 cars came from Maruti Suzuki’s stable. Also 5 Hyundai models fared in the list.
-Mahindra Thar records it’s all time high monthly sales figures
- Nissan too posts an all highest monthly sales in 34 months
-For Tata Nexon posts its lifetime highest sales figures.
-50% of volumes for Toyota have come from Maruti Suzuki sourced cars

Largest segment (volumes) – Compact SUV
- 1 out of 5 sold were a CUV
- Compact SUV segment has contributed to 18% of the total PV sold in Jan
- The segment saw three major launches in the segment – Kia Sonet, Nissan Magnite & Toyota Urban Cruiser. All these 3 models have proved to be volume churners for the respective OEMs and has helped the segment grow a stupendous 90% YoY
- Brezza + Urban Cruiser combined sold over 13.6k units! The rebadging exercise seems to have worked for the partners Suzuki & Toyota.
- Venue emerged as the bestselling Compact SUV for January 2021 and 11.7k units were
-With Renault Kiger launch; it shall be one of the most crowded yet sought after segment in the Indian market.

Top Manufactures for the Month:

Maruti Suzuki:
-It was a flat growth ( -0.6%) over Jan 20, but loses a Market share of ~7.5%
-Retains top 5 slots in the 10 best sellers for August and holds 7 positions in the top 10.
-Maruti’s Alto becomes the bestselling car for both OEM and the Nation.
-Maruti’s undisputed EECO sells 11+k units and is in the top 10.
-S Cross volumes seems mysterious or there is a plan for an update?.

Hyundai:
-Hyundai has its best figures and registered a YoY growth of ~ 25% & a market share of 16%
-Creta was Hyundai’s best-selling model and India’s No.1 SUV , YOY growth of 78%
-Venue came in second and sold 10,592 units with a YoY increase of 75%.
-The Top 2 selling Hyundai’s were SUVs in Jan . Hyundai has been able to rapidly enhance its Market Share in SUV space and is getting significant share from the segment.
-Hyundai’s i20 Elite loses out in volumes. Looks like Hyundai’s loss is Tata’s gain (Altroz)
-Hyundai’s Santro is a flop doing just 2.2k units

TATA Motors:
-Tata Motors registered a YoY growth of massive 94% & MoM increase of 15%. It retained the position of India’s 3rd biggest OEM in Jan’21
-Nexon was the best-selling Tata and 8,225 units were shipped in January 2021. The model grew 143% YoY and 20% MoM
-Altroz was the second best seller for Tata Motors and 7.3k units were dispatched to the dealers in Jan’21. Altroz too recorded its all-time highest monthly sales volume in Jan’21. It is the first time since launch that Altroz has crossed 7k units’ dispatches.

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Nice to see car sales return to a 300,000+ per month run rate - hopefully, this time on a more sustainable basis. Also delighted to see how most manufacturers have done well - Tata most of all having nearly doubled volumes from January 2020, even before the Safari dispatches start. The success of the Nissan Magnite which is selling 3000 cars, and Honda clawing back up the ranks with a 4 car line up also gives hope to folks like VW and Skoda, that their new line up later this year should help them move up the ranks. Jeep’s sales are clearly not representative - dispatch of the updated Compass had not yet started and at least the Bombay dealer does not even have the old test drive cars left - so maybe they will do better too. What is especially heartening is that this volume has been achieved despite obscene waiting times for some cars - the Seltos has a 3 month waiting list, and the Creta a 6 month wait.

One suggestion - we should look at changing some of our vehicle classifications. I don’t think the Creta and Venue sit in the same C2 segment. I clearly see all sub 4 m vehicles as C1 even if they have a cross over body style. We should also introduce an electric segment and start trying to split out the Nexon EV from normal Nexon sales if Tata Motors makes the data available.

These are the two segments where Toyota clearly has a stronghold on. They are just unbeatable here.

I am seeing the new Facelifted Nexons and also the Altroz everywhere. Lots of people seem to be choosing Tata especially in Kerala.

The Nexon Facelift seems to have struck a chord with the more conservative buyers who might have been reluctant to buy the original version with the Quirkier face.
I personally like both the versions.

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

If Maruti is coming up with 1.5 diesel in Brezza, as is being speculated, it may draw sales from other in c suvs. Even without diesel it's nearly catching up with Venue. Hope better auto transmission sense prevails in Maruti headquarters. Ciaz and S cross may also fare better with a diesel engine. Can Yaris also get that engine too ?

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Looks like Tata has ruthlessly culled models that did not sell well - no more underperformers like Hexa, Zest, Bolt, Storme etc in the line-up. They essentially have just 4 vehicles on sale now - Tiago/Tigor, Harrier/Safari, Nexon and Altroz

January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-screenshot_2.jpg

Look at the sales consistency (4 digits every single month) of each model - enough to give Tata Motors a place in the podium (3rd place after Maruti & Hyundai)

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Excellent and sustained comeback by auto industry. 300K dispatches crossed.
  • Good performance by the usual suspects - Maruti, Hyundai, Kia and Tata.
  • Mahindra should release XUV500 facelift fast. It is slowly losing ground to Kia and Tata. One successful release (Thar) doesn't make a summer.
  • Good start by Nissan's Magnite. Hope this car gives Nissan the confidence to invest more products in India.
  • Toyota continues its dominance in SUV space with Innova Crysta and Fortuner. Indians don't seem to have complaints about the price hikes by Toyota. It is a testament of goodwill built on these cars over the years.

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for the detailed report as always.

It's really great to see Tata climbing up the ladder and sitting comfortably at no. 3. Tata deserves it. As pointed by many, I too see lots of Nexons and Altroz as well as Tiagos in my town now. Altroz looks superb as well as the facelift Nexon. Let's see what Safari does.

If we take the numbers of Ertiga and XL6, it's well over 12K! That's commendable. Similar case with Brezza and Urban Cruiser, totalling over 13K. Toyota has a new best seller in Urban Cruiser. And the new Fortuner has a 1K plus despatch, wow.

I think you've confused Triber and Kiger. What Magnite is to Nissan, Kiger is to Renault. There are no factory despatch of Kiger as per the report.
