Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Glad to see Tata doing well and climbing up the charts. To expand its lead over Mahindra, it needs a Bolero-killer, Bolero being the dominant contributor in Mahindra's numbers for several years now. Maybe TM should form a separate *rural transport* division and give it this charter.

I'd like Mahindra to also come back well and start rising up the charts. They need a Nexon and Harrier killer.

Rooting for both the domestic companies to do well and eventually sock it in the face to Maruti-Suzuki, Hyundai and Kia!

And, they are the only manufacturer in the table whose each model is selling above 2K per month. Hope the Safari continues the success for them.

PS: Also noticed they have the best looking cars in each class, in my opinion.

It appears more than 50% of Toyota sales are rebadged Suzuki models. The Glanza is Baleno. Not sure what the! Urban Cruiser is. Vitara Brezza?

Yes, the Urban Cruiser is a rebadged Maruti-Suzuki Vitara Brezza.

This could be due to the fact that Hyundai has more penetration in the market with a larger dealer and service centre network.

Surprised and Happy to see TATA Motors climbing onto the 3rd spot, and maintaining it's position since the last 4-5 months since unlock happened! This is a classic B-School case study of how top management's determined efforts and sync'd marketing campaigns + competent products (in the heavily crowded segments) helped change the brand perception from negative to positive, overall.

Waiting for Safari numbers to only help strengthen TATA's position as India's no. 3 car manufacturer!

Added bonus being the recent surge in the Tata Motors' stock price, from 120 in June '20 to 300 in January '21

What you lose in depreciation, you make it back in equity.

Depreciation is about 15-20% on annual basis, appreciation in equities is not a constant ratio.

I have been following TaMo's script since the last 5 years, from it's peak of 500 in '16, it saw a low of 73 in May '20, only to climb back to 300 in January '21.

We consider appreciation only while we see a profit in equities. Direct equity investment on a YoY basis may not see appreciation in all scripts/stocks.

Again, it's a case to case consideration, everyone's depreciation may not be offset'ed by equity appreciation !

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

People who bought shares of Tata motors of worth rupees Tiago, they can sell those shares now and buy a brand new Harrier !!! Tata motors shares are on a roll and it reflects how company is doing. Well done Tata motors, all the best for Safari and HBX.

Maruti doing good but their share is down by around 4-5%. Except Ciaz, all doing good. Ertiga & XL6 sold more than 12 L which is three times more than Innova, clearly people seeing value for money proposition.

Hyundai & Kia doing good. Mid size SUV segment is completely dominated by these 2 players, Creta, Venue, Seltos & Sonet all doing exceptionally good and bringing good numbers month on month.

Mahindra needs new cars badly. New Scorpio and XUV 500 may bring back some numbers.

Rest all big names including Ford, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Renault, VW, etc. combined together did only 15 %, such a shame. Remove Glanza and Urban Cruiser numbers, it will reduce more

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

There is a saying in the auto industry "there is no problem that a really good car cannot solve". So true. Just look at the Nissan Magnite and what it did for a brand that has been lying in coma in the ICU for 5 years.

And 4 good cars sure seem to have solved Tata Motors' problems, with another competent one (Safari) or two (Hornbill) on the way.

Yes. My comment was nothing technical or even an advice. Just a light hearted remark since you mentioned the stock prices. Those who were able to buy stocks during April time frame made a killing. Smart people must have made BIG bucks.
Having said that, I see for a foreseeable future Tata motors only growing up and stock flourishing along.

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

January sales of 2021 has got amazing insights.
1. Maruti lost a whopping 8% market share
2. Tatas gained 4% market share
3. If Glanza is included Baleno was the top selling model, selling over 19k units. Something about this car despite deeply negative reports on its structural strength and stability when it comes to accidents
4. Sales were up a whopping 16% compared to January last year
5. SUVs are now 36% of the market compared to 28% last January
6. Sedans are the sad tale degrowing 10% January YoY with even the much famed 4 meter sedans showing a 20% degrowth. The good story here is the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ciaz showing unexpected growth. Maruti DZire degrowth by a third is very surprising.
7. 4 meter SUVs have posted a whopping 95% growth Jan YoY. Vitara Brezza holding out very well despite lacking a diesel engine. The toast however are the Korean twins of Hyundai-Kia who have collectively posted 95% growth with the Sonet being introduced. The sad story in this amazingly promising segment that has seen even a weak brand like Nissan bagging massive bookings, is the Ford Ecosport which has degrown almost 50%
8. The mid sized SUV segment comprising the likes of the Seltos and the Creta has maintained numbers but dipped in overall market share. Creta has stolen the Seltos' thunder. Kia needs to relook at it strategy with both the Creta and the Venue beating the Seltos and Sonet by a handsome margin this month

Not really confused but you can call me an over-optimist. I was rooting for Magnite to start off big with 5k dispatches or so per month considering the hype. Eventually then settling down to a lower number.

But they did 3k in January. My first instinct was it is way too low for a CSUV priced like a premium hatchback. In the same breath, I saw Triber numbers in the table which was 4k dispatches. Both being priced similarly, my mind did a quick comparison and I blurted out that Magnite numbers are low. Obviously these are different segments so it was an unfair comparison on my part.

Re: January 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Sad to see the big 3 Japanese makers (in India) given up on the higher segments.
  • Honda has killed the Accord, Civic, & CR-V
  • Toyota has killed the Corolla
  • Maruti refuses to sell a well equipped Vitara & S-Cross. They've also killed premium halo products like the Baleno RS & kizashi

OTOH:
  • Tata has the Harrier & Safari
  • M&M have the Thar & (upcoming) XUV 500
  • Jeep has the Compass
  • VW has the T-ROC & Tiguan
  • Skoda has the Octavia & Superb

Though history would indicate otherwise, I expect Hyundai to come all guns blazing with their next gen Tucson to challenge Hector, Harrier etc. It'll be the perfect upgrade for many Verna, Elantra, & Creta owners.

Absolutely! TaMo has got a bright future for sure. With Safari about to hit the roads and HBX being tested, TaMo consolidating it's position as 3rd largest car maker in India (only concern being KIA, though) !
