Too generalized statement & almost a wrong perception - mainly because the current options in this segment are limited. When the buyers don't have much choice, they go for the FE & Reliability factors - but in a better looking model.
The M800 was the indisputed best-seller even when it sold side-by-side to the Alto. Shows that this segment did not care about a 10+ year newer design at a marginal price premium. Its only when the Alto was seriously repositioned that it overtook the M800 in sales.

And you thought Spark was a new design? Matiz and Spark are identical. This is no 'fresh' design - only the change of badge & lights. Thats it.
The 3 leading car makers of India come out with "totally redesigned and all new" models of their cars every alternate month and we all know that the newness is restricted to new badges, grilles and headlights. If we can accept them then why the hostility towards GM and the Spark?

The Alto was brought closer to 800, and also, the 5 speed 800 was discontinued to help Alto sales... Thats when almost sales shot up...

Did some research during a half hr I had free today. Located a recent TOI article (Ahmedabad ed) at The Times of India ePaper where the Spark is mentioned to be released with a 1.0 L engine.

For all you lazy bones, you're going to have to wait till tomorrow when I can muster up some time to post the screenshots of that article. For the hardworking rest (minority- I'm from the other camp), I feel sorry for you but support your slogging ur behinds searching for that article.

You didn't have to do all that research dude. You could have just asked me. I could have told you It's coming with a 1.0L engine.

Let me find the engine specs and make it a little easier for you.

Well, the term "research" is used in a very gargantuan, gregarious and lofty description Some concerted browsing is more like it.

If I'd known that you knew that it was coming with a 1.0L engine, there'd have been no necessity for me to try knowing all this from the internet and I could have instead utilized that time for more useful things - like staring at the wide blue wonder Vidyut- I'm deeply disappointed in your sharing abilities.

Times House having contradictions:

The first quarter of the year will also see GM re-launch Daewoo Matiz in a new look and under a new badge Chevrolet Spark. With a 1.1-litre engine, this car will be pitted against Maruti WagonR and Hyundai Santro with a Rs 3.5-4 lakh tag.

Economic Times

However I think TOI is right since I think even in other countries the spark is available with a 0.8L/1.0L engine option.

Tech specs[Source Chevrolet Singapore]:

1.0L engine (SOHC 8 valves),4 cylinders
64.34bhp[approx 65 ]@5400rpm
91Nm@4200rpm

0.8L engine (SOHC 6 valves),3 cylinders
51Bhp[approx ]@6000rpm
71.5Nm@4400Rpm

I sort of like the looks of the Spark. Better than the Estilo IMO.

If they position it against the Getz/Santro/Swift (which they would), looks would certainly matter !
If they are going to position Spark against Getz/Swift then what about UVA?

@ Cartech - dont think it'll be pitted against Swift / Getz .
IMHO, Spark ( if priced right ) is gonna give tough times to Santro and Alto.
U-VA will compete with Palio 1.2 ( dunno if its still available ) alongwith Swift / Getz / Indica

The release date must be really close now. Spotted this today

The interiors (the area around the A/C vent) seem to have a high glossy finish, but overall seemed more than acceptable.
