I think we need to redefine the categories.
E.g. In C2, we have clubbed cars like Creta with Brezza (almost 40% price difference) and with Ciaz (SUV and Sedan and again 40% price difference). The target buyers of both differ widely.

Also, in Utility segment Thar and XL6 can't be compared to Eeco or Go+. Specifically, Thar is lifestyle vehicle and cannot be termed a Utility vehicle.

Not surprised to see Creta and Seltos doing well in the crossover segment despite spreading lots of negativity on Hyundai/Kia issues and Seltos crash result.

Even after people being aware of these things, still, they are inclined towards the Seltos and Creta.

I see around 10-20 Seltoses and Cretas going on roads daily and the GNCAP result didn't affect the Kia much.

Hope, Hyundai/Kia will listen to the issues, which people are facing and improve the safety of the Creta/Seltos and other Hyundai/Kia vehicles by improving the structure of the body.

And, I must appreciate the Tata for showing more improvement in sales every month, especially, Nexon and Altroz. I almost see around 5-10 Nexons and Altrozes getting delivered everyday at a Tata dealership, where I see every day on my visit to the coaching center. But, what Tata needs to improve is, to improve QC in order to be a better product. The reason for growth in Tata sales is due to spreading awareness on safety. Hope, other brands will realize and improve their vehicles in safety front.

Few observations from my side -

1. In terms of total dispatches, this is the second best month after last October.

2. Hyundai has managed to dispatch more than 50K units for the second consecutive month this year (that is 100%) and only once before they managed to dispatch more than 50K units consecutively in last September and October. Curiously, they used to dispatch more than 50K unit only once every year starting 2016 till 2019 and it was always October or September (festive sales). However, they were able to achieve the feat now at the start of the year which makes me to believe they could sustain these numbers going forward as well.

3. As everyone mentioned Tata Motors is on a roll with the launch of Safari as well their increased dispatches all other vehicles (except Tigor). The last time they sold more than 27,224 units was way back in March 2012 (almost 9 years - 107 months to be exact) riding on the back of their previous huge selling mass market cars - Indica, Nano and Indigo. During the month, they sold a total of 36,984 units (yes, you read that right) with Nano constituting 10,475 units, Indica (+ Vista) selling 11,420 units and Indigo (+ Manza) contributing 8,295 units. The other cars were Sumo (3,631 units), Safari/Storme (1,802 units), Venture (978 units) and Aria (383 units).

4. Toyota's 14,069 is their highest in quite sometime - last time they manage to dispatch more was in August 2018 with 14,136 dispatches. The cheif architects of this rise are their bread and butter models - Innova and Fortuner. Innova crossed 6K units after 2 years - the last being March 2019 and Fortuner crossed 2K units in more than 2.5 years - the last being June 2018.

5. MG registered their best ever monthly sales since their launch riding on back Hector's best ever month since launch and also ZS EV's best month.

6. Skoda Superb continues its superb run with it's 4th consecutive month with more than 200 units sales. December 2017 was last when it sold more than 200 units, before this successful run.

7. Harrier continue to impress with its 5th consecutive monthly sales of more than 2K units and Safari debuted fantastically and almost managed to sell more than Hexa's best ever month.

8. Ertiga started posting higher than average monthly sales for the past 8 months and along with XL6, the average monthly volume is above 12K which is really very good number for a vehicle of this category.

9. The new Creta posted its 2nd best ever monthly sales since it's launch way back in June 2015 and now the top selling model from Hyundai stable beating the likes of 120 and Venue from its own stable. Along with Seltos, Creta continue to rule this SUV segment and hope other manufacturers take notice of this.

10. Verna has managed to outsell Ciaz since the diesel version of Ciaz has been discontinued, however City is still the king of the segment.

11. The dispatch numbers of Venue/Brezza/Nexon/Sonet along with Kiger/Magnite twins reminds me of the compact hatchback segment in its prime. These cars must be bringing in truck loads of money for their OEMs and the hottest segment right now in Indian Automotive sector.

12. Dzire - what a fall from its peak and one of the prime reasons for Maruti's decreased market share. This is now selling just in the range of 50-60% of what is used to sell in its peak. Same case with i20 - selling only 3/4th of what it used to sell during its peak, however Hyundai have it covered with Venue and Creta's increased sales and managed to retain their market share.

13. Finally, the entire D1 Sedan segment makes for a very sorry reading along with Figo/KUV100/GO twins which could well be discontinued now.

I would like to ask what are the future plans for Ford and Honda in India?

While Honda seems to be selling just enough to sustain itself, Ford doesn't seem to be doing even that. And with their breadwinner Ecosport ageing rapidly, the developement of next generation Figo-Aspire-Freestyle being stopped internationally; I don't know what they are planning to keep themselves afloat. Or do they even want to do that?
I'm aware about a potential Creta/Harrier rival coming from Ford but don't think that would be enough.

I also wish things change. Sadly though, Indian customers won't reject a car just because it's unsafe. Market research has proven that the attributes Indian customer really cares about is presence/snob value, mileage, reliability and features. Anecdotal, but most people I have spoken to say "rab ki marzi" when it comes to safety

It looks like business will continue as usual unless the following happens:

• Government mandates a certain level of crash-worthiness which is in-line with European standards. Also provides a subsidy for producing cars which are safer given cost will go up further and Indian cars are already quite expensive (read crazy taxes ). We don't just need EVs, we need safer cars in India
• Competitors with reasonable presence and pull in the market (say greater than 5% market share) launch safer products at similar price and feature levels. Unlikely to happen, I had hopes on Honda and Toyota but they have completely ignored this CSUV segment.

On a broader point, we also need to enforce and instill a culture of driving and pedestrian discipline. Driving on the wrong side of the road should just not be acceptable. Safer cars can only help till a point.

Had a question on how the sales discontinuation work for a particular model. For eg; the CRV sales was discontinued in Dec 2020, but still there are a handful of sales reported in January and February.
For that fact, even prior to the official axing, dealers were not taking any booking of the said vehicle.

So, what is the real channel that is contributing to these numbers? Its very very small number, but curious to know the practical aspect behind this.

Since these figures are dispatches to dealerships, it could be the leftover stocks available at the factory or may be a different dealer who couldn't sell and was dispatched to another one in these two months.

Honda would have stopped taking fresh bookings for these two cars after discontinuation.

What you are referring to might be production discontinuation in Dec 2020.

If there is a sale number registered it means its billed at factory to be dispatched to a dealer.

Dealers would have stopped taking bookings in a particular city owning to low sales. Few markets who might have existing pent up stocks would pick it up from factory.

The co-dealer transfer will not be registered as a new sale. Only those billed from the manufacturer counts.

There are a few stocks available in factory even after end of production. It's difficult to move these stocks. There are huge discounts given to dealers to pick these stocks. Some dealers take the risk and place the order while most play safe and don't order.

• Mahindra had the highest number of models in the Top 10 selling Diesel Cars for Feb 2021. Mahindra Bolero, Thar & Scorpio ranked 2nd, 4th & 6th respectively in the list and combined contributed to 29% sales in the Top 10!

• Toyota had 2 models in the Top 10 - Innova and Fortuner. They combined sold 7,916 units and contributed to >21% sales in the Top 10.

• Hyundai Creta was India's No.1 Selling Diesel car for February 2021! The model sold 7,558 diesel variants and was the lone offering from Hyundai in the Top 10.

• Kia had 2 models on the list - Sonet & Seltos. Almost 42% of the Kia Sonet sold in Feb'21 had a diesel engine and the contribution from diesel variants for Seltos was 38%.

• Tata Harrier which is a Diesel-only variant ranked 8th in the list and was the sole Tata offering in the Top 10.

• Ford Ecosport ranked 10th with dispatches of 1,948 diesel units in Feb'21.
