March 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

If I were Mahindra I would be very very worried!

NOTHING is Selling there and they are not interested in hatchbacks or sedans either. Their potent XUV300 isnt bringing in moolah too.

What next Mahindra?

Re: March 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Interesting points:
1) Harrier + Safari combo is clocking 4400 units a month which is great for Tata. What is interesting is that Hector alone clocked 4700 units. This shows that good products with road presence at VFM prices are lapped up by the market.

2) Seltos and Creta combined have clocked 23000+ units a month. This is amazing and tells you how much Honda and Toyota have under estimated the market.

3) Honda is dying, only Amaze to show for with numbers stagnating. They must up their game else they will have no place in the market in future.

Those are Hector and Hector Plus combined sales. What's to be noted is that 55% of Hector twins' sales come from petrol engines. Tata on the other hand doesn't have any bigger petrol engine on offer with Harrier/Safari.

Re: March 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Impressive Job by Tata Harrier over the last year. From initial struggles of 1000 +/- units, its been selling consistently at 2000 +/- units. To add to it, additional 2000 units of Safari, Tata is basking the in the glory of their success!

Given the equally competent performance by Hector at 4500+ units, it seems this segment is heading for some good well deserved action. Wondering then Mahindra's strategy of delaying XUV500 will push them out of the race? Or relegate them to a 3rd position in this segment forever!

Whats going on with the Honda City? I think, for the very first time, it has the second lowest sales/dispatch numbers amongst the C2 segment sedans, that too just a few months after the launch of their new generation model. The only C-segment sedan that sold lower numbers was the VW Vento.

Even the (flopped) Toyota Yaris and (ancient) Skoda Rapid sold more this month!

What next?
Well, the Scorpio still sold more than the Harrier, and its a 7 year old product, so lets not get too carried away here.

What next? New scorpio. New xuv500. Tuv300 as bolero neo.

True. The only thing thats saving Honda is the diesel in their Amaze, and the cabbies seem to be lapping it up.
If the city fails, which it might, given the sales are already down massively, I guess Honda might start packing its bags up.

I am guessing the BS6 TUV300 & 300 Plus are around the corner to be launched, which will add 1000-1500 sales, the XUV500 facelift is coming soon, as well as the Scorpio updated model. M&M is currently enjoying Thar's success, expecting better numbers once these updated models are launched.

Good to see Tata at 3rd spot, well deserved. Kia after having low volumes in Dec'20 have picked up very well. I am guessing it will be a tight fight for 3rd spot between Kia and Tata.

I am really surprised how Maruti is maintaining 1st spot without even a single diesel engine and turbo-petrol option. Imagine their market share if they bring back the diesel and introduce turbo-petrol's.

Jeep on 2nd spot for YOY sales, thanks to the updated Compass. They should bring in the Renegade and offer the premium sub-4 meter experience to Indians. This will help the dealerships to remain afloat. Also the 4Xe should be evaluated in India for Compass/Wrangler/Renegade. I am really surprised to see not even a single sale of Made In India Wrangler .

Slightly off topic - One of the Jeep dealership in Hyderabad is closed this year, and there is only 1 authorized service center in whole of Hyderabad. All the showrooms belong to same dealership, this is monopoly. Customers will have no option but to use the same service center even if they are not happy with it. Not that I heard any horror stories of Jeep service center in Hyderabad, but only 1 service center in a big city like Hyderabad means, everyone from nook and corner of Hyderabad and surrounding districts should use the same service center. Jeep should focus on increasing the service centers and touch points.

Mercedes-Benz sells 3,193 cars in Q1 2021

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it sold 3,192 cars in the first quarter of this year.

The company recorded a growth of 34% over Q1 2020, thanks to strong sales in January and February. Sales remained at pre-Covid levels during these months.

According to Mercedes, models like the A-Class Limousine, C-Class, E-Class, GLC, GLE and GLS witnessed very high demand. The E-Class LWB was the highest selling model in Q1 2021, while the GLE was the best selling SUV during this period.

Sedans accounted for 53% of the total sales followed by SUVs. 19% of all new cars sold in Q1 2021 were booked online.

Re: March 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Great show by TATA. Well deserved 3rd spot & looks like market has finally realized the potential of Nexon. This & Altroz both beg for a proper AT and they can easily clock 10k numbers.

Magnite seems to have settled around 3k, not bad for a Nissan. Hope they continue to streamline their dealership and A.S.S issues.

What's wrong with the CITY? Was there some sort of a shutdown? Really low number. Korean twins are laughing all the way to bank with 23k copies moved this month. Wonder why cant Honda see what they are missing by not getting the HR-V here

Honda is hit by the semiconductor shortage.
