re: Mahindra XUV700, now launched at 11.99 lakhs

W601 was supposed to be next gen XUV 5OO, Seems like M&M renamed it to XUV7OO. So they will sell XUV 7OO along with the existing XUV 5OO.

Similarly Next gen Scorpio Z101 will sell along with existing Scorpio. May be they will rename the previous gen Scorpio.

kahaani mein twist! Q2 FY2022 means, Aug-Sep 2021. so, if this news is correct, there is little doubt that the New gen XUV500 is nothing but XUV700.

Looks like someone in Mahindra did a branding change to XUV500 , similar to what Tata did to 7-seater Harrier (as Safari). May work in Mahindra's favour if it's priced correctly. It may also be a strategy to position it at a slightly higher segment (to compensate for higher pricing). Interesting days ahead as their marketing kicks-off for launch.

My guess is that the new gen XUV 5OO will likely get both 5 seater and 7 seater versions.

XUV 5OO against Harrier and Hector
XUV 7OO against Safari and Hector+

Thats the only logic I can think of.

re: Mahindra XUV700, now launched at 11.99 lakhs

Safari - joined
Alcazar - joined
Hector plus - joined
XUV - left the meeting.

There is indeed a gap between 20L crossovers and Fortuner, looks like game has moved on. Will they repeat a 2011? time will tell. There seems to be people with enough money to spend and not having options even after having 20+ Lakhs with them.

re: Mahindra XUV700, now launched at 11.99 lakhs

Mahindra had long back confirmed that current gen Xuv will be sold along with the updated one. So this seems to fit in, XUV700 over XUV500. Moreover it is not uncommon for Tata and Mahindra to cross over the prices of two siblings, few examples as below:

Altroz top end with Nexon lower variant
Harrier top end with safari lower variant

TUV300 top end with Scorpio base model
Bolero top end with TUV mid variant

So won’t be surprising if 500 top end cross overs with 700 base or mid variant.

Lastly, Mahindra had also confirmed that the current gen Scorpio will also be be sold alongside the updated one. So no surprises if the test mule of New Scorpio speculated to be named as Scorpion will be sold in the similar way XUV500/700 models.

So to summarize they are following a Comfort/Ruggedness offering right from the 10Lakh to 25Lakh bracket and hopefully we will have the following combinations from Mahindra in the future:

1) XUV300/Bolero
2) XUV500/Scorpio
3) XUV700/Scorpion
4) Alturas G4 (Combination of both comfort and ruggedness)

Not naming Thar 2020 since it’s a different league altogether.

re: Mahindra XUV700, now launched at 11.99 lakhs

KUV300, TUV300, XUV300,500,700
Do they have any reasoning on number convention ?

If we look at other manufacturers the naming convention usually has some underlying specification.

For example
Maruti 800: 800cc engine (~796cc)
Maruti 1000: 1000cc engine (~970cc)
Bmw 320d : 3-20-d => 3 series - 2.0-litres - d diesel engine
Bmw 760Li : 7 series - 6.0 litres - L long wheel base - i fuel injected petrol engine
(not all BMWs religiously stick to a certain convention, but we do see a pattern)

For that reason even motorcycles (RX100, Bullet350, RTR160, NS200, Duke390, Dominor 400) have an underlying specification that inspires naming convention.

In what numbers? Remember, the XUV500 sales is at mere 600+ units per month (as of March report). Probably due to semi conductor shortage, but even the last 5 months sales figures did not touch 4 digits. I am not sure that would bring in any gains by keeping that in their portfolio.

Well I don’t disagree with your point, but then vacating the 15-20 Lakhs bracket will not be a wise decision that too with their one of the flagship product. Though they have the Scorpio in that bracket but XUV still has separate fan base. An alternate theory would be they will discontinue both existing Scorpio and XUV500, keeping the new Scorpio for the 15-20 Lakhs price bracket and XUV700 positioned a bit higher in the range of Safari.

re: Mahindra XUV700, now launched at 11.99 lakhs

<All price references below to “on road”>

Naming convention aside, I personally feel the top of line XUV should be max 1-2 lakhs over the Safari at best.

The top of line Alcatraz in petrol / diesel should be max 2 lakhs over the corresponding Creta.

At the end of the day, you can’t ignore that compared to Alcatraz, both the Safari and the XUV come with a segment higher Diesel engine and even the XUV’s petrol is more powerful.

And in case of the XUV, its only real USP over the Safari is its AWD (which is also not Thar pedigree 4x4).

That’s a good sensible approach to pricing by both. Hope neither of them go overboard like Ze French.

re: Mahindra XUV700, now launched at 11.99 lakhs

So we have a redux of Bolero Vs TUV3OO where the newer generation was renamed at launch and the older generation continued in the market. That strategy bombed in the market with the TUV3OO becoming a non entity. With the XUV500 Vs XUV7OO, I guess it will be the opposite - the XUV5OO will become a non entity. Hope M&M do not get greedy and price XUV7OO in the stratosphere.

On another note, would we get a 7 seater version of the XUV3OO as the next XUV5OO?

There should be a second variant from the top of the line which comes with AWD but similar to Safari in all other respects. But the real 'top of the line' variant is expected to come with ADAS, ventilated seats, digital cockpit, 360 degree camera etc and this may be priced significantly higher.

Spot on actually. I feel that second from top variant should perhaps be 1 lakh over the Safari at best. And the full blown ADAS etc one can perhaps be 1 - 1.5 odd more. I just hope they don’t limit sunroofs (assuming they have one) to the ADAS equipped one. If i was in the market for this (I’m not) I would actively buy the variant without the ADAS and other electronics overkill. Buying into all of that in a 1.0 version Mahindra might backfire on the reliability front.

If I am correct the new gen xuv 500 is to be called the xuv 700 and they are planning to sell the current xuv 500 alongside. This just confirms my suspicions that they are gonna fill the gap of the alturas with the new gen xuv 500 aka xuv 700

That being said, the current generation XUV5OO also desperately requires a refresh. They can't continue selling it as is even if the XUV7OO is introduced (psychologically speaking a higher model number registers as a higher price. They can't call it XUV5OO and price it significantly higher than the current range).
