re: Mahindra XUV700, now launched at 11.99 lakhs

Fy22 as has been clarified is July to sep of 2021. Expect launch in September.

1. XUV 700
2. Might sell along with XUV 700 till a new iteration ( might be 5 seater) comes
3. Coming out this year. Skoda and VW have been doling out static launches one after the other too.
4. XUV 700 is 7 seater. Not sure on the next gen Xuv500

Edit: some issues with quoting so replying directly.

Mahindra has officially confirmed that XUV500 will be temporarily discontinued after the launch of XUV700. (Screenshot will be there in some early posts on this thread).

As far as future of XUV500 is concerned, it was being speculated last year that new gen XUV500 will be based on Ssangyong Korando which is sold as a 5 seater suv. So, it would make more sense for Mahindra to relaunch XUV500 based on Korando platform, this will compete with the likes of Jeep Compass, Harrier and Creta. Similarly, the XUV700, will take on the 7 seater ones.

Let’s see it’s a wait and watch type situation.

I am genuinely hoping that the speakers are mounted in the lower portion of the doors, and not in the upper portion as in existing XUV500. The audio setup in existing XUV500 has poor acoustic design, and one of the contributors if positioning of the speakers, constrained depth of speakers and poor baffle and damping.

Keeping speakers in the lower portion of doors will allow installation of speakers with more depth without interference of movement of window glass. This position may reduce space for map pockets / storage to some extent, but anyways is adequate and will reduce rattling, and if Mahindra absolutely wants to provide extra storage, it can be two tiered for more convenience with extra volume.

BTW, shouldn't the storage cavity in the central console (opposite the gear shift lever) have some slope towards front? Or the one seen here is actually a cover and the real storage is below this cavity?

Hope it comes with wireless charging and a couple of high-speed USB ports (atleast one supporting QC3 or 4 high voltage high current charging). Ideally the cavity should have a removable surface and some space below it so that one can install a wireless charging system under the surface. I have a home assembled 4 port fast charger, and wired one port to a dashcam (cables routed through central console, side panels to a location near rear-view mirror), two ports for mobile charging and one spare port. I also kept a provision for (fused) 12V DC here for my DC-DC converter to charge my laptop on the go or for using LED work/camping lights.

re: Mahindra XUV700, now launched at 11.99 lakhs

"FY" or Fiscal Year in India begins from April 1st of one year previous of the year in question.

Therefore for clarity, FY22 began on 1st of April 2021 and will end on 31st of March 2022.

"Q2" refers to the second quarter of said year- one year having 12 months- divided into quarters- that gives 3 months each- Apr/May/Jun being Q1, Jul/Aug/Sep being Q2.

As for the XUV7OO, I believe that it is infact an updated XUV5OO. However, I would imagine that Mahindra believes that it is updated and redesigned in enough areas to justify an updated name as well. How it'll work out for them, only time will tell- seems like they're pushing into territories that have historically been very tough to compete in.

I believe the current gen XUV5OO will coexist with the 7OO as a more "accessible" option to those looking for a 7-seat crossover, at least for now. For the ones looking to go premium, the XUV7OO would be a tantalizing option with only a couple thousands' worth adjustment on the EMI.

As for the flush fitting door handles and the skeptics and naysayers- I think Mahindra has a level of self awareness that they're really not given much credit for. They're more than aware that the moment someone gets their hands on their new car, people will be knocking, shaking, forcing the door handles open etc while recording in portrait to get those YouTube views. They're fully expecting some of us to hit the hills come winter, bury the car under 3 feet of snow and again, record what happens when you unlock it, video title being "MAHINDRA XUV7OO TRUTH REVEAL DOOR HANDLE (**BROKEN?!?!**) SNOW TEST" and upload it on every platform there is. I'm sure of it.

This looks like a toned down version of Tesla's handle.

Copying someone else's innovation and applying patent. Well done Mahindra!

re: Mahindra XUV700, now launched at 11.99 lakhs

I know the talk is on XUV's, but we are also touching on passenger space, and when it comes to this, I can't hold myself from writing that I always love the kind of space and comfort Xylo offers. Having bought a 1st gen Xylo E4 in Aug 2011 and burnt fuel covering over 1.43 lakh km, I still love driving the Xylo on long trips, and I sure will take my Xylo to 2 lakh km and more. Feel sad that Xylo was completely stopped.

Incorrect. Although they may look similar, Tesla Model 3's flush door handles don't "pop out" and are considered one of the worst in the industry, ergonomically.

You don't need to look too hard to find people struggling with where to push, how to pull, all that. Infact, despite having large hands, the pushing with my thumb on one end to then insert my fingers on the lever end to finally pull open the door.. I know it'll be fine once I'm used to it on the daily but IMHO it's still not that great.

I believe these will be the kind where the lever end will actually "pop out" to greet the user when unlocked.

Completely agree there! The kind of space and the seat comfort Xylo offered in the third row of seats is something even some larger MUVs can only dream of. I have taken a couple of outstation trips in a XYLO and I just couldn't help praise the comfort in the third row of seats.

As for these handles, these are a straight copy from what one would find on an Aston Martin.

This type of handle which pops out on one side, exposing a sharp end can be dangerous (there is also a possibility of getting the cloth torn). Also, they have unnecessarily introduced a 'additional click' in UX/Usability terms

Hope it works that way as it can really get irritating (especially when you are in a hurry) to having first press and then pull to open a door.

Tesla has not invented the concealed door handle, but their innovation lies in their specific implementation of a concealed door handle.

Meanwhile, Mahindra has applied for a patent for their specific implementation of the concealed door handles.

So, you cannot merely say that since Tesla has a concealed door handle, Mahindra has copied Tesla's door handle.

P.S.: Ford had filed a patent for concealed door handles for cars, back in 2007, which does not mean that Tesla had copied concealed door handles from Ford.

A quick search also uncovered a patent for concealed door handles (although not for use in a car), filed all the way back in 1952.

Looks like it'll get reflector LEDs, and not projector LEDs. Can anyone comment on the performance of the former?

Boot space doesn’t look much since 3rd headrests will almost be touching the boot glass.
The third row leg space seems to have increased. The space between the second row and third row head rests are quite far, indicating the comfortable sitting for the third row occupants.

Seems the air vents for the second row are re-positioned to the center console area from the B pillar, Or are these additional to the B pillar ones, for better cooling?

Hope the floor will be flat without the central hump as is with the present generation. Floor, minus the hump, is a passengers delight.
