re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

Is it possible Mahindra skip 4x4 on petrol variants of 5-door Thar? I could not understand reason behind Mahindra not offering 4x4 on petrol ScorpioN.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

Looks promising and even parents approve of this one.

OT:
I just hope that they don't do something funny or Tata like.
Permutation and combinations of funny (but dislikeable things):

1. No 4x4 for mStallion
2. No AT for 4x4
3. No AT for either Diesel or Petrol (this one has AT but not sure which fuel type)
4. No 4x4 at all or priced out of reach

Removing AT will give them maximum sales in UP.

I just hope that they don't mess it up/don't get too greedy/remove AT from where I want because I have the means now and I will really book it this time. Please M&M. DO NOT MESS THIS UP.

The Scorpio N with AT and 4x4 would give 3-5kmpl. And would just be a deadweight on the wallet in a fuel economy conscious country like India.
The 3 Door Petrol HT AT Thar itself gives only 7-10kmpl depending on where and how it is driven. It weighs 1735kgs. Im sure the 5 door will add another 150kgs to 200kgs weight. 1900 to 2000 kgs or so. Considering this, I surmise that they will not offer a Petrol powered AT 4x4 5 door Thar.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

Some observations from the video:
1. The roof liner in the video suggests fixed metal hard top.
2. Second row door quarter glass is excessively large to make the window glass roll down completely.
3. Two seats in second row are placed temporarily for testing and are not final I guess.
4. If its a hardtop in metal, then why a swivelling rear hatch is provided?
5. Minimal overhang at rear make it a little disproportionate but is good for departure angle.
6. Reat AC vents is a welcome addition.

Mahindra Thar 5 door likely to get multiple powertrain options at launch.

Mahindra could introduce the Thar 5-door 4X4 and 4X2 together at launch; fresh spy shots reveal new details.

Thar 5-door to get both petrol and diesel engines
Two gearbox choices will be offered
Expected to get both 4X2 and 4X4 at launch
Quote:
it remains to be seen if Mahindra offers a three-seater bench layout on the 5-door Thar. What’s certain is that it will have a considerably larger boot than the 3-door iteration.
Quote:
Mahindra is expected to launch the 5-door Thar sometime this year, and its only direct rival in the market will be the upcoming 5-door Force Gurkha, also slated for a launch this year. Although not a direct rival, it will also see competition from the new Maruti Suzuki Jimny as a lifestyle off-roader.

I don't think so. Thar RWD 3 door didn't receive a thumping response as Mahindra received for Thar 2020 (4x4), XUV700 and Scorpio-N. I would only imagine Thar 5 door RWD would sabotage Thar 3 door RWD sales.

Question for the gurus here - from the videos/ photos are we able to understand if it shares Scorpio N’s platform/ suspension?

Read somewhere RWD Thar has got 6-7k bookings already. Just can't find that article to quote.

Don't really think the RWD Thar even MnM expected thumping response.

I think they would be happy with decent numbers to add to their overall tally in the sub4 meter segment and also keep Jimny at bay.

It would be a shame if Mahindra follow this trend on the 3 door version also. Looking at the way MLD is now deleted from petrol 4x4 and there is a Petrol AT 4X2, I would not be surprised if they completely remove Petrol 4x4 from the line up. Also i feel Jimney's success will accelerate such a decision from Mahindra

Rear drum brake.

What on earth. For a 130+ hp car? I hate when car companies do this. How much cost increase this will cause to have discs all around?

I really hope the width increased proportional to the length increase.

Better thigh support, streamlined ergos all around are given priority hopefully.

Probably not a lot in terms of cost but what is the benefit?

There are some Japanese and German brands with vehicles that costs more than this fitted with Drum brakes in the rear, there is no problem with braking.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

So the 5 door variant still gets only four seats as per the spy shots which remain similarly congested like the 3 door version. Whats is gained is the footprint, boot space, weight, number of doors and the price. Overall the 5 door version is not as exciting as it looked like in the imaginations.

I will call the 5 door version a poorly executed copy since the Thar is not the original design and a copy of the Jeep Wrangler which has seating capacity of 5 people.

Even the 3 door version is poorly designed in terms of practicality. They could have increased the length of the front door along with better folding mechanism for the front passenger seat like whats found in the second row seats of the Innova for easy ingress-egress which was enough in the 3 door version. Now this 5 door version ends up offering only the two additional doors at the cost of increased dimensions which will make it pain to use in the cities with congested roads as well as will make it more prone to rest on the underbelly while crossing the tricky offroad mounds and slush.

No point judging the vehicle without seeing and experiencing it. Read this article which may change some of your impressions.

Either way no one will be able to judge fairly until the product is released. And like it or not, whatever we may say, the 3 door product is a runaway hit as we can confidently expect the 5 door product also to be.
