Skoda Octavia RS to return as a plug-in hybrid in 2023.




The new-gen Octavia RS iV plug-in hybrid to arrive as a CBU import. It uses a 150hp 1.4 TSI engine and a 116hp electric motor for a combined 245hp.

Like its predecessor, the RS iV will be brought in as a completely built unit (CBU). Under the government’s quota for foreign vehicles, automakers are allowed to import upto 2,500 cars a year without the need to homologate them.

- Octavia RS iV plug-in hybrid to be CBU import
- Will come with 116hp electric motor, 13kWh battery
- Electric-only range will be 60km

With an expected price tag of Rs 41 lakh, the RS iV is also likely to be the most expensive RS to date. What it will offer potential customers is a unique blend of green tech, sporty performance, fun driving manners and loads of practicality.

Interesting move. Looks like we will have plenty of hybrids in next couple of years in our market. Plugin hybrid might be best of both world to people like me who can enjoy EV in city and have some fun on highways over the weekend too.

- More CKD and CBU products on the cards going ahead

- Some limited-edition models like the Octavia RS iV that are being explored.

I have driven multiple Plug-in Hybrids. Honestly, I think they are bad of both worlds. Neither here nor there.
If it is only 148 BHP + 113 BHP from electric. The electric power runs out after 50 kms, then you will be driving with just 148 BHP for the rest of the trip.

I hope they keep the current 2.0L 187 BHP and then give Hybrid on top of it. Else the whole fun of driving Octavia is lost.

1.4 litre engine for an RS badged octavia is blasphemy with or without an assisting electric motor. Vehicles like this should offer not just initial acceleration but brutal top end also. Interior is good though.

Does 0-100kmph in 7.3 seconds.
Does around 60km on electric power alone
Full import means it’s expected to cost nearly Rs 40 lakh

For the first time ever in India, the Octy RS will be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. So, it uses a smaller 150PS 1.4-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, teamed with a 115PS electric motor, to develop a combined output of 245PS.

So, what happens once the charge is depleted, we are left with just the 1.4 motor? We have similarly priced (OTR considering the low tax on EVs currently) pure EVs that are quicker on its feet and that have decent range - read EV6. Enthusiast may still prefer the old school ICE that has ample power on tap at all times. So where does this leave this? Plus, the ethanol blending may play spoil sport.

You mean the Accent Viva.

Unlikely the rear wiper will be there for India-spec vehicles. Even in the EU, it's not standard in all variants and/or geographies, but can usually be optioned.

Do they not recharge via the engine like other hybrids? Once the battery runs out?

I kinda understand when people complain about V8s etc being downsized to 2L 4 cylinders but is going from a 2.0L 4cyl to a 1.4L really something that will have noticeable effect when the overall power is the same?

Ofcourse you can recharge, but imagine a scenario where you are on a 300+ km trip. And only the first 50 km you get 250 Bhp power and the rest you have to drive in 147 Bhp. Unless you stop to recharge every 50-60 kms.
That is a big difference, the whole point of buying octavia is that it's a fun car to drive.
