i have noticed tha hr 18 thing too. well, that place could be native place to some import guy. and dont underestimate these oh-so-backward villages of northern india. my frnd' family in karnal boasts of two beemers and an S.

it is possible that these people get these registration numbers from the rto under some special number thing. imports with jhol willl never stop untill the duties become a bit more sane.

This thing of hr-18 and other numbers like mh-06 i.e. pen, is that these rtos are apparently not very well versed with the import documentations so the jhols happen there. choksi and most other dealers here and anywhere use such dud numbers also ... thats why they're all on the run now that the dri has caught up with them and who suffers....well lets see, amitabh, saif, sunil shetty...sorry suniel shetty, sanjay dutt, sushmita sen, dia mirza (how on earth does she afford a LC lexus?) to name a few.

did u guys notyice, after these raids, one rarely sees a Land Cruiser on the road....???? huh?its a big scam but as they say, u set to find one sucker...u get a million!!

There may not be any jhol. People transfer the numbers from old cars to new ones. So if you have an old car with a nice fancy number (unlike the new ones which are 10 letters/digits long like KA 05 MB xxxx) you can get it transferred to a new car. People generally do that for 'Easy' registration numbers.

I doubt Indian laws have a provision for transfer of registration numbers.

I have also seen some exotic cars registered in a series meant for bikes. Saw a Lexus SUV (not sure which one) registered with number MH-04-BE-X. This series was used for bikes in 2002. May not necessarily be a jhol number, but shows to what extent RTOs can go to please the customer and earn big black bucks!

I'm sorry if this is offtopic, but did anyone notice that the Safari in ACI October 06 issue has an MH - 01 - CA reg which is that of year 2000 - 2001?
Seems like even big companies are going the cheaper way.

For quite sometime the Delhi RTOs have stopped the transfer of regn numbers of one car to another. Earlier it used to happen very frequently where the excuse dished out used to be - the number is lucky, numerologically it suites etc.

This practice has now been put to stop for general public. Maybe with influence some are getting it done, but it is far and few.

There is another much bigger scam of fake addresses. Almost every second car in Mumbai (and almost every commercial vehicle) has a Thane registration / Navi Mumbai regn. ,i.e., MH-04-, MH-43-. Although some people do have residences/offices in Thane/Navi Mumbai, most of these vehicles have fake registration registered on fake addresses in order to avoid paying octroi. Many dealers are involved in this scam (i know this because i have personally seen this). This can easily be done by paying a meagre Rs.2000 to the dealer and the dealer will do rest of the 'setting'.

Due to these problems with the imported cars of fake numberplates and also it being stolen , i am really scared buying an import car! i have been thinking of the Lexus Land cruiser to buy from mumbai, but it scares as to what its actual history is... paperwise and car maintenance wise. What if i buy it and then some Custom officials land up at my house to take it away!
