Good work by Hyundai. I get a feeling that they may have some firm plans of putting up a manufacturing plant in the North.

Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki India Managing director Kenichi Ayukawa, who is also the SIAM President currently, also attended the inauguration ceremony.

Maybe Maruti takes the cue and builds something even bigger, they have the whole plant at Gurgaon to convert into the office/ residential or even develop some retail. One has to see their current offices (the eighties or is it nineties )

Re: Hyundai inaugurates new corporate headquarters in Gurgaon

25 year’s of Hyundai in India and they showed their further commitment to the country by coming up with this massive corporate headquarters. Something that Ford couldn’t manage even after staying in India for such a long time and I am not talking about the headquarters but the commitment part.

They are certainly looking to further consolidate their manufacturing facilities as Turbanator mentioned above and should hold them in good steed if they finally decide to do that. Announcement of bringing affordable EV’s is also noteworthy but what I liked most about yesterday’s programme is that they have pitched for lower duties for imported electric vehicles. Hope someone listens to what the leading manufacturers have to say on the electric policy.

The news about new plant was shared on Team-BHP few weeks back. Now, this news about new HQ in Gurgaon clearly demonstrates Hyundai's commitment for India.

I hope European and American OEMs take some cues from this.

At present, Hyundai's sole manufacturing facility in India is located near Chennai. The factory has an installed capacity of 7.5 lakh units per annum. Besides serving the domestic market, the factory also builds vehicles for 88 other countries.

The city of Gurgaon in Haryana has emerged as a hub for automakers in recent times. Besides Maruti Suzuki's sprawling manufacturing facility, the city is also home to the corporate offices of a number of brands, including Hyundai.

They had a Zonal Office in Noida before this. This may not be true but from what I have heard, they have moved their entire Hyundai Umbrella companies (likes of Hyundai Lifts, Hyundai Constructions etc.) in this office.

Current NISSAN MD and Former MD of HYUNDAI posts wishes to Hyundai inaugurating their new HQ. He cherished being part of the ground breaking ceremony event that happened back in 2018. He remembered the foundation stone being laid by him . It is a postive attitude from an industrial icon wishing success to his former company!

Ford has a massive global development centre in Chennai, the largest for Ford in the world.

Just the set up costs in 2015-15 was Rs 1,700 cr.

In 2020 it set up a large R&D plant spread over some 25 acres iirc.

Ford's India portfolio sucks but they aren't like a Honda or something, they have invested a lot in India and large parts of their business is here to stay EVEN if they shut their auto sales in India.

I specifically was mentioning the commitment part because of the same reason that Ford already has a world class R&D center here. At the risk of going off topic, that Ford couldn’t come up with more models for India despite having such facility tells you more about the strategy and the commitment part.

Hyundai has its strategy in place for a country like India and they are hammering the point further by being in the public eye every now and then. This corporate building will grab more eye balls then the R&D center of Ford, that not many people know. Majority of Indians are still the ones who buy cars by looking at the visibility of a company and that’s where Hyundai and Maruti score.

It makes me sad that even after investing so much in India and from where Ford exports to so many countries, people still got the raw deal from the company and were left waiting for the best selling models of Ford abroad.

Hyundai deserves a congratulatory pat on the back for this.
Even though Maruti is approx. 3x times that of Hyundai in terms of market share, it appears that Hyundai is leaving no stone unturned to take the battle head-on.

Putting up such a huge corporate campus in Maruti's backyard itself announces Hyundai's daring intentions, in my view.

Re: Hyundai inaugurates new corporate headquarters in Gurgaon

This is testament to the fact that Hyundai is absolutely committed to scaling up operations in India. The news of Hyundai setting up their second plant in Haryana after operating out of just one plant in Chennai, shows the weightage that the company gives the Indian market. With increasing demand, the Chennai plant is falling short in delivering in a decent timeline, considering the huge waiting period for cars like the Creta! With a brand new HQ and another manufacturing plant on the cards, Hyundai is taking all the right steps in the direction of giving Maruti an extremely tough fight in the coming years.

P.s. Hope Haryana speeds up the approval process and expedites the necessary clearances for setting-up the plant.

The Hyundai India's new workspace looks quite fancy and there are ample zones to relax.

MSIL also had updated its corporate headquarters in 2006 from Connaught place to Vasant Kunj. This building is co-shared with Airtel and is next to Promenade mall on the Nelson Mandela marg.
But they could sell off or start renting out office space from their Gurgaon plant.

Re: Hyundai inaugurates new corporate headquarters in Gurgaon

I hope the Corporate HQ set-up in Delhi is indicative of Hyundai wanting taking to take its place as a responsible market leader in India. Maruti, despite being #1 by a long stretch for so many years, has only cared about profits and never lifted a little finger to improve the industry and its consumers’ welfare overall in terms of safety, emissions reduction, road infrastructure development etc.

Maruti has never encouraged safer cars and continued to make unsafe cars with missing airbags etc. for as long as the government permitted it. We don’t see any safety campaigns in the press or other media from Maruti- the only ones I have seen were from Ford and VW. They could have lobbied for cheaper cars by reducing the absurd duties in India, but they never do so. Their approach to mass Dieselisation that happened in India the late 2000s and till mid 2010s (which was one of the contributors to the massive rise in air pollution in this period) clearly showed the lack of mature and responsible industry leadership and reeked of opportunism. At first Maruti tom-tomed the benefits of diesel and sold Diesel cars at fat premiums and profits. When BS6 came along and they did not have a suitable engine anymore, they completely turned about face, claiming no one break even with a Diesel car and everyone should buy petrol cars. When they saw Hyundai doing brisk diesel car sales post BS6, they are now talking of bringing back a dead Diesel engine from its grave.

Hyundai have a unique opportunity to do all the things Maruti did not do. So far, they have also been single minded lt focused on profits, and did not do much else than making and selling cars. But the establishment of the corporate office in Delhi could be a turning point. They could work more closely with the government, NGOs, public safety advocates, environmental groups etc. to really make a difference in this space. Industry leaders who do not do their part to shape the industry for future good, never remain industry leaders.

Out of curiosity, what are the Ford models from abroad that you are missing here?

India's market is almost entirely sub- ₹10L (that is sub- USD 13500). Ford has nothing in that price range in the US. Their cheapest Focus (no longer sold) was about USD 18,000. In France they have the Fiesta and Ecosport, both work out to > ₹10L at the cheapest. Their bestseller in the US is the F-150 pickup truck, which has no market in India.

Reality is, Ford tried to compete in India; succeeded to some extent (old Figo and Ecosport did well); but it was too high-cost and low-margin and they have decided it is just not possible to expand.
