Hyundai Motor India announced it will launch its N Line performance models in the country this year.

Hyundai India says the first car will be introduced this year, followed by more models over the next few years.



Hyundai also claims that the N Line range will be accessible for all, which hints at the aggressive price positioning in the pipeline.

Other than a body kit for the entire car, dual tip exhausts and a suspension tweak with few changes to the interior the i20 N-Line doesn't have much difference with the regular i20. The engine is going to be the same 1L T-GDi with 120hp mated with a 7 speed DCT or 6 speed IMT. If Hyundai really wants to differentiate the N-Line i20 then they must offer a slick-shifting 6 speed manual with it!

With regular i20 costing a bomb as it is, this looks a good way out Hyundai is going to milk it with this one.

Though the first step is cosmetic, it will bring N line name to mass market and by the time Hyundai brings in the full N line, it will be good marketing for them. That twin exhaust does look good.

Since we already have the 1.0L GDI here, the sensible thing would be to pair it with a manual too, apart from that only expect some visual tweaks, better looking rims, a sporty new bumper, side skirts maybe a spoiler, the lovely N badge on the sides and a red strip instead of all that chrome in the rear. Most importantly, expect it to be overpriced as well.

This looks like Hyundai's attempt to justify the exorbitant pricing of the i20 DCT. Just add some plastic bits here and some badges there and et voila, we have got the N Line car.

But then the irony is that most of the people dont give a rats ass about under the hood mechanical improvements. They only go by the old Indian adage, Jo dikhta hai, woh bikta hai.

Most people do not go for Hyundais for their performance, but more for the creature comforts, and by extension, their looks, tho these days looks are quite subjective (the new Creta? YUCK!!!!)

Those who truly understand performance, would stick to the polos and the now extinct punto abarths

The new i20 is already so overpriced! It would have been better if we had the Verna in the N-Line guise with the 1.4 TGDI + 6 speed manual. That would ensure more practicality and a better price to size deal.

I think Hyundai is on to something here rather than just cosmetics. The whole market knows that I20 has become super expensive already. So much so that they have gone below Altroz in sales past few months which does not even have an Autobox. Bringing an even more expensive variant with no mechanical changes is not going to cut it. My guess is that Hyundai is clearly looking at a distant future where they can bring some superb N line variants and develop a niche segment. People will definitely lap it up once they see the slanted H logo.

I just hope one of the products under the N line would be a Verna N, with the 1.4 Turbo from the Creta, and sportier suspension setup.

That would be one seriously fast car.

While the N-Line is coming, a WRC i20 just landed at the Delhi Airport today! Purpose of the WRC car is still unknown.

Could be a showcase for the N-Line car coming soon.

Bring it on! Even if the initial stages are just cosmetic, I see it as paving the way for proper N Lines in the future.

Stage 1 = Cosmetic

Stage 2 = Cosmetic with a bit of sportiness thrown in. Say, a firmer suspension & a mild remap. Has anyone driven the new Hyundai turbo-petrols? They are a lot of fun to drive. From the Grand i10 Nios 1.0T to the Creta 1.4T.

Stage 3 = Proper N Lines with all the magic treatment

Will be a fab branding exercise for the brand overall. It will bring in enthusiasts to the slanted-H family & add some more glitter to their showrooms. Am glad at least someone is thinking along these lines (unlike Maruti).

And a well weighted steering with good feedback too. Steering has always been Hyundai's Achilles heel, which takes away most of the fun in a sporty car. I guess this gripe is taken care in their performance models at least. Whether it pulls the heartstrings like a VRS or a Polo GTI remains to be seen.
