Re: Honda City Hybrid | Unveiled on 14th April 2022

Finally a Honda to be excited about after a long time!
The fuel efficiency is phenomenal, and this will pave the way for more, right-priced hybrids into Indian mass market segments.
This car has the ability to re-invigorate a dying segment, of course, provided it is priced right.

Ah, that mileage is not promising to opt for a Hybrid City against its ICE counterpart. My City ZX CVT gives 15KM/L over 6000 KMs of highway and city driving with an average speed of ~35KM/Hr.

Re: Honda City Hybrid | Unveiled on 14th April 2022

This is one of the few vehicles that is available currently without any waiting period. Enquired at the local dealer to replace my parents Honda City as they seem to find it the most comfortable comapred to any of our other vehicles - to my utter surprise he said grey colour available for immediate delivery.

Re: Honda City Hybrid | Unveiled on 14th April 2022

Looks like boot space has been compromised to accommodate the space saver wheel, which of course is a good thing considering our road conditions. Overall boot space seems to be way too less for a sedan though.

Honda is yet to reveal the ground clearance for some reason, hope no nasty surprises in that department.

Hope the shared FE figures are in 100% city traffic.

Re: Honda City Hybrid | Unveiled on 14th April 2022

Is the aircon connected to ICE or battery powered? Would ICE be switched on always when using the A/C? Hope these details would be covered during the official review.

I want this product to succeed atleast to wake up others who offer the gimmicky 'dumb' hybrid or no hybrid at all.

Re: Honda City Hybrid | Unveiled on 14th April 2022

Going by the information available here, I have my reservations about this product.

The indicated efficiency figure of 19.xx while decent in its own right is not a massive improvement over the 1.5 iVTEC. That engine can also deliver this kind of mileage in highway conditions. A lot of noise was made about 25kmpl, but that doesn’t seem to be the case in reality. The economy numbers for the hybrid seem to be about par with the diesel City. Nothing new or exciting or path breaking.

20kmpl still means a MINIMUM fuel cost of 5-6 rupees per km at today’s petrol price.

Boot space, a major USP of the City, has been badly compromised. From being able to accommodate holiday luggage for a full family of 5 to barely B1 segment hatchback sized, it is a huge drop in capacity. 300liters of boot space is a Swift or Kwid territory. The horizontal layout also means you can’t stack things on top of one another. This is a major deal breaker for the City hybrid, as it most likely can’t be used for family holidays or long trips. It basically becomes a city use only car, for it just won’t accommodate the luggage. There goes it’s single biggest advantage over the ZS EV.

I think it's in the stop & go city driving conditions where this "City:eHEV" would excel, since the traction will be from the electric motor and the engine will be running at its optimum efficiency to charge the battery. Assuming that the ARAI fuel efficiency tests are aimed at bringing the best out of traditional IC engine cars, it won't show the real world efficiency advantage of the hybrid system.

For a stretch of ~3-5 lakhs (Assuming the City:eHEV to be around 18-19 lakhs OTR), the ZS-EV makes much more sense for people who mostly drive within their town. While it won't create a breakthrough segment , the City:eHEV would be a nice bridge for people wanting a transition step to BEV - one gets the benefit of an electric car in stop-go traffic, without having to worry about, installing a charging port in their parking, range anxiety or long charging times for cross country trips.

PS: Another example of Honda India doing too little, too late

Absolutely correct. In Mumbai my Yaris CVT gives an average of 6 to 7 kpl. I usually cover a distance of 9 kms in 1 hour with an average speed of 7 kmph. I think a City would give 7 to 8 max given that its lighter car.

So in city the eHV will run max in electric mode. Also regen braking will boost the battery. Expect it to give 12 to 14 kpl in city which will be twice what I get.

On the highway both will run on IC engine negating the advantage.

Lets wait for media drives. The cost difference if 3 lakhs is justified with the Honda sense tech being offered over the ZX.

I hope Honda also offers on lower variants for faster adoption of the technology.

Re: Honda City Hybrid | Unveiled on 14th April 2022

Autocar India says 22 - 25L ex-showroom !

Looks like the good folks at Honda havent stopped smoking the good stuff !

Brand nahin, lekin nakhre phir wohi ! Flashback to Civic and CR-V market flops.

The top-end ZX CVT is 15.1L ex-showroom in Blr and ends up at 18.6L on-road.

If Honda prices the City eHV at 20L ex-showroom then the on-road price in cities like Blr will cross 24L on road.
