So this change is not applicable for diesel cars? Or am I missing something here?

And even for gasoline engines I doubt they can design, manufacture, test and roll out the bioethanol engine in 6 months. The emissions testing phase in itself takes more than 6 months in many cases.

Re: Government wants carmakers to produce flex engines

The problem I see across every domain is that one decision is taken and it is just thrust upon the common man without thinking how it will be taken through. If they really want to see the success of alternate fuel, shouldn't they first think about handling challenges related to EV successfully? What happens to the common man (and now manufacturers too!) who get stuck at the proverbial 'last mile'?

Re: India to make it mandatory for auto makers to offer biofuel vehicles in 6 months: Gadkari

There is no point of even pushing EV's if the electricity supply of India is backed by sustainable green (renewable) energy sources. Does anyone know what percentage of the total electricity consumed by India comes from Wind, water and solar?

A little factoid of India's power generation (Source: https://powermin.gov.in/en/content/p...ance-all-india)

*Thermal power (Coal, lignite, Gas, diesel) - 60.9%
*Hydro electric (renewable) - 12.1%
*Nuclear power - 2%
*All other renewable energy sources - 25%

When we make only 37% of our total power consumption through renewable and green sources how will pushing EV's reduce the pollution? The only answer from the GOI would be to first create the demand for more power and then push for green power.

Where did you get these numbers from? The Gross (not Net) profit margin for IOC, the biggest OMC, has averaged 5.5% over last 12 quarters. And it went into double digits only for quarter ending June, 2021 when it was 10%. Clearly one should not be looking at one quarter numbers because there can always be inventory gains etc.

Let's be neutral. IMO finally our "representatives" seem to be understanding the gravity of running a super high fiscal deficit. They have to somehow extract more money as taxes from the citizens, come what may. This is an attempt to push all aboard onto a long term solution to help prevent further fiscal stress.

Govt neither wants to increase corporate taxes (because corporates funded their campaigns) nor can they resort to devaluation without destroying their votebank, so they're "monetising" all sorts of assets - things that their votebank don't actively track or take serious note of.

End of day, as long as cars can be upgraded at a low cost, nothing wrong with that move. The average Indian PV consumer anyway doesn't drive more than 1,00,000kms, so possible engine life reduction by a small margin shouldn't be a big issue.

Voted no. Been spoiled by owning an Innova for 12 years - zero problems. I used to do lot of night driving on highways before Covid and getting stranded on deserted highways is a much more important thing to avoid than enjoying driving pleasure. I had decided to buy Seltos when it was launched, and wanted AT + Diesel even before test drive (because of typical monthly mileage of 3000km). Took a test drive and really liked this combination. Didn't like the Petrol + 7DCT combination - also the test car was lot more unrefined and noisy than Diesel + AT on acceleration.

I'm referring to annual statements available on their website. Please peruse those & do refer the Profit after Tax that's before exceptional items.

Re: India to make it mandatory for auto makers to offer biofuel vehicles in 6 months: Gadkari

Sometimes I really wonder, who give these impractical ideas to the authorities. Coming up with a 100% Biofuel vehicle within 6 months is like asking authorities to repair 100% broken roads in India in the same time.

What bothers me as a customer is Government's illogical approach going forward to tackle imports and environment pollution at the same time. Instead of promoting EVs by ramping up infrastructure and providing subsidies, they are going for an impractical approach. Already as an owner of 2 Petrol cars, I feel worried about this rushed up 20% ethanol mixing rule coming in 2023 which may lead to early part failures and service centres shrugging off by blaming contaminated fuel.

Moreover, eventually customers might find themselves paying Rs 80-90 per litre for Ethanol Fuel too with over 60% taxes because Government(s) won't let go their lion's share that they are currently getting from Petrol/Diesel.

Nitin Gadkari is planning to make flex engines mandatory for all automakers.

India to make it mandatory for auto makers to offer biofuel vehicles in 6 months: Gadkari-smartselect_20210924180357_chrome.jpg

Quote:
"In the next 3 to 4 months, I will be issuing an order, mandating all vehicle manufacturers to power vehicles with flex engines (that can run on more than one fuel)," Union Road Transport and Highways Minister- Nitin Gadkari said in a statement.
Needless to say, once it becomes mandatory and a timeline is set, automakers will have no other choice but to comply with the order just as all did with the BS6 regulations.

Request to please shed some information on what happens to the existing cars. I mean newer cars from manufacturers like VAG are sensitive to petrol only. What is needed to make these cars compatible with the blended fuel. OR are we looking at two different fuel machines at the fuel station - blended fuel and unblended one.

Re: India to make it mandatory for auto makers to offer biofuel vehicles in 6 months: Gadkari

Isnt there any scientific approach left in this country ? Who suddenly just "orders" manufacturers without running trials ? What is the sustainability of this ? More sugarcane cultivation, more ground water consumption ? Not to mention potentially lower fuel efficiency, engine damage ?

PS- Couldnt resist this - Somebody should just do a Jaya Bachchan to the Say Shava Shava dance happening at MORTH - " Ab bas kijiye" !

Re: India to make it mandatory for auto makers to offer biofuel vehicles in 6 months: Gadkari

First they turned NHAI into a debt laden company from 75k crore in 2017 to 3lakh crore in 2021 with no visible results. The NH4 outside Pune is incomplete since a decade and NH17 still has months to go. Where has all the money gone? I hope all this money is truly going to result in completed projects and not just patchwork of half complete freeways all over.

And then this madness in an attempt to reduce the fuel import bill. I wonder if even Gadkari is as savvy as he is made out to be.

Well, the person owns sugar mills "Purti Group" that produces flex fuels

This is the same person who wants horns to sound like classical music? Basically, he is not bothered about noise pollution.

Public opinion does not matter in the Kingdom.
