Seems kinda odd actually.

The first bit of the vid clearly shows the 'VVT' badge, whereas the M13 engine for the Swift does not come with VVT. Only the M15 and the M16 (Swift Sport) engines come with VVT.

OTOH, the pricing of 8K would match up with the M13 variant.

Do you want a biased answer? .. I feel G series engines are the best that human kind has ever created. After all, there is a G16B in my car.

With the Fabia gunning for the premier segment, perhaps MUL should launch the Swift 1.6 sooner than planned.

But with the recent govt. taxation for 1500cc+ category, the chances are slim, if not none...

I think since the cc limit for availing the 12% tax exemption is 1200.
If there is a high torque 1.2 M series engine, it would make a good city car as well as make the petrol swift cheaper by a solid 12%.

M13 is a better engine than G13.
The bore X stroke dimensions are 78 X 69.5 so its 1328cc engine developing around 91bhp and 116Nm of torque.

The only car in India to have M series engine is SX4. Suzuki went in for G13 engine from Esteem. G series engine seen in Zen, Esteem and Baleno are good engines for the requirements in India.
The G13 is the most widely used of all G series engines in India. It debuted in Esteem, then went to Gypsy then Versa and then Swift. One of the best engines to hit India apart from the OHC engine.

@nitrous:
Again, the 1.2 you are talking about is 1242cc, so it wont be able to enjoy the advantages of tax. This 1.2 is avaliable in Splash.
The details are:
BoreXStroke: 73 X 74.2 i.e. 1242cc
Compression Ratio: 11.0
Power: 86bhp
Torque: 114Nm

Hm. An oversquare engine. As opposed to the G13's 74.0 x 75.5 undersquare dimensions.

And a 4 bhp & 3 Nm increase over the Swift's specs.

This should be interesting. We're gonna get a real rev-happy engine...perhaps a realistic/reliable 8K redline, with just ECM toppings...aha...

This engine was expected to debut in Dzire, but is never happened. But they are also slightly heavier than G series. Anyway, they are better engines and we might have them after the Euro 4 emession norms become standard in Major cities.

Yep, would have ironed out some of the -ves of the Swift as it is now (issues with driving in city traffic, frequent gear changes, lack of grunt etc). The 1.3L engine was good on the 925kg Esteem, but with the extra 100kg of the Swift, it feels inadequate. And here the Baleno's 1.6L engine would have helped, since it is anyway proven on a 975kg car. And all this without any loss in FE or actually even slightly better FE.

And I guess it would be cheap for MUL to source the Baleno's engine compared to bringing in the new M series engine.

The only problem would be product differentiation, with a hatch and premium sedan both having 1.6L engines (different engines, but for the lay customer both are just 1.6L engines) and priced far from each other. Or maybe they could have the 1.6L as a sports version for the discerning few.

The issue is for city driving only. Once on the highways at speeds, there is no lack of power felt. Baleno had low end grunt, and this would have helped Swift, no doubt.

Any news of the M series engine making it on the swift this year. Just read in another post that it will be launched next month ie. Nov 2008. Is vvt going to be introduced in the engine?

thank god for the new engines. I personally am the biggest fan of the G series engines but it was high time they let these classic engines to rest. the UK swift has a 100 horse 1.5 or 1.6 not sure. So there is definitely a possibility of the 1.5 coming in. (I see 1 year waiting already!)

We can expect the M Series engine in the Swift from maybe January 2009. Like how they made changes to Swift in January 2008, I think they may come out with a new Swift in Jan 2009. We may expect the following

1. Swift Petrol with M Series Engine
2. Swift VDI with In built Audio as in DZire VDI
3. Swift ZDI may be launched to attack i20 and Grande Punto once these car are launched
