If the demand goes down, you will see discounts. Else price will continue to go up.

We all believed that Toyota never gives discount on Innova. But in 2019 we did see some discounts due to low sales.

So let the market play its role.

One company’s loss is another company’s gain

Toyota knows their car now literally has no competition with Ford’s exit. I am not considering MG’s Gloster yet. Fortuner is a monster in its own regard with sales always on a roll since over a decade now. Literally enjoying the monopoly. But, this greed is now going to push consumers to look elsewhere - why not big 3 and settle for a nice sedan?! I’m sure the image Fortuner has is immense. But, the price at which it is being sold now might hit Toyota (though won’t be a big blow)

Not sure why Hyundai and Kia don't bring the Telluride and Palisade into the Indian market.

Heck, they aren't evening competing properly in the segment below that.

The new Hyundai Tucson would probably sell like the XUV700 if it were brought here. Same holds for the Kia Sportage.

Toyota needs to fix the DPF issues immediately to keep milking the Fortuner. Recently, a friend's 2020 Fortuner broke down on the highway and had to be towed on a flat bed.

Bullet proof reliability with the butch looks is the reason people have been buying this beast with eyes closed. However, the Indian consumer is fast to breakup and move to a different segment if the core value proposition doesn't exist any more

I purchased Fortuner 4*4 AT (BS4) at 41 lakhs on road in 2018. The price of same model today is 48 lakhs. It looks like I can use the car for some years more and sell it for profit considering the increase in price and BS6 DPF issues

Is it Toyota or is it GST: look at the net realisation taking Thailand as an example. Legender 4x4 AT shows TBH (Thai Baht) 18,39,000 Ex Showroom in the Toyota Thailand website. This is approx INR 41,25,283. Thailand has 10% GST on cars. Net realisation for Toyota is approx INR 37,50,257. (They had reduced GST to 7% till Sept 30, 2021; am not sure if it has gone back up to 10%; I have taken 10% for this calculation)

In India, the ex showroom price for the 4x4 AT version is INR 42,33,000. GST is 50% (28% GST+22% Cess) resulting in net realisation for Toyota of INR 28,22,000.

A similar calculation for Malaysia would show net realisation of approx INR 36,73,973; the sales tax there seems to be 10% but it also appears they have given a waiver upto December 2021.

So why are we screaming at Toyota when they seem to be pricing it lower than Thailand and Malaysia??? Ofcourse these prices are not feature adjusted but it shows where the problem is. The low realisation forces manufacturers to delete features. Another factor could be volumes. Still, directionally, they are not really "ripping us off".

Karnataka price is perhaps the highest in India because of 20. 59% registration tax on top of GST!!! So we end up paying approx 81% in taxes (GST+ Reg tax) on the manufacturer's price!!!!! (GST of INR 14,11,000 and Registration of INR 8,71,753 = INR 22,82,753 of taxes on manufacturer's price of INR 28,22,000)

Toyota have increased prices regularly, and so has every manufacturer. However, the high absolute price we pay is due to taxes!!!! We knew this, didn't we!

This, is exactly why competition is important. I don't see Toyota rolling back on their absurd prices unless other manufacturers foray into this segment.
As for Toyota's future, it won't be long before buyers see through this overpricing of mediocre products in the name of reliability, just as they rejected few of Honda's overpriced products in the last few years.
All said and done India is still an extremely price sensitive market. Toyota really is skating on thin ice here.

God knows what’s up with Toyota these days. I don’t see the new LC launching in India in the near future due to the chip shortage and huge waiting period in some other countries. Also, they were thinking on launching the RAV4 at around 60 lakhs in India, but I don’t think so now that it’ll be launched. Toyota is milking the Innova and Fortuner, and are busy rebadging the Maruti Suzukis. God save this country’s automobile sector !

We unfortunately dont have any other reliable choice anymore so Toyota can do as it pleases. Sheer road presence no other vehicle above or below its price point has.

Only other vehicle that has so much road cred is Thar and if Toyota owned it then it would be priced similarly high.

Could you please compare the breakup with Indian tax rates, just curious to know how different are prices before taxes. FYI we have in India 28% GST + 20% Cess. I have been in the wait for a 7 seater SUV in the 35L+ category for a while now. But with Ford quitting on India, MG skeptical for 35L+, Euro cars in the 50+ category (all-space not being in diesel option), Indian cars not being there yet, Toyota fortuner looks to be the sole option. (Isuzu MU-X though for some reason doesn't have the looks and appeal but fares as the only other option)

Even the expected kodiaq 2021 I doubt will be in the diesel option. Hope this segment gets better options soon.

What terrible times we live in!

Creta getting sold for 20+ lakhs and fortuner costing 50+ lakhs. This is just madness.

Honestly the first endeavor was a much much better product but failed in the market.

It's a monopoly game for Toyota. They don't care about newer r&D as they rake cash with rebadged marutis in the budget segment and big money through innova crysta and fortuner.

As someone already had said, the typical crysta / fortuner buyer isn't price sensitive at all, and Toyota clearly knows it.

One simple way is to stop buying expensive stuff but then that’s not gonna happen. Toyota is the Rolls Royce in Indian babu class (no offence meant to bhpians who buy it for their own good reasons).

Real fun would be when Honda, Hyundai and Kia bring in world class products priced closed to the Fortuner and make the Fortuner look like a bullock cart. With the brand recall that these three enjoy, it would be easy for them to eat up into The Toyota market. Competition improves the breed and with no competition, the evolution of Toyota as a company is taking its own leisurely time.

Taxes need a rejig for sure. High taxes when you buy and high taxes when you operate and high taxes when you maintain and lowest value when you scrap. Bull crap times and governance.

With the only able contender, Ford Endeavour no more in production. Sure Toyota would be grinning and all willing to milk the customer more.

The only advantage I see in the Fortuner is the road presence. Even I move over and give way for the Fortuner when I see one in my IRVM. So if you want to be the king of the road, be ready to spend 50+ lakhs
