September 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: September 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I know it's tough job, but still, may I request for the Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis for the months of August & September 2021 please? I hope the job is not dependent on just one person to get it done; whoever misses it in this forum or not, I'm missing them very badly.

Edit - Just observed, there used to be a time when 7/10 top selling vehicles were from Maruti stable & even first 5 of them from MSIL, this is the first time I'm observing there's just 5 of them from MSIL which explains the origins for such threads

Re: September 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Phew, huge fall in almost all the numbers, 'chips are really down', maybe some amount of management towards meeting the festival demand. The fall is greater in smaller cars, looks like automakers are devoting energies towards more profitable higher models. XUV 500 seems to be in terminal stage of its life cycle. Mahindra cars have shortest life cycle, 10-12 years from big bang to end. Except for Bolero and Scorpio

Re: September 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Tough month for MS. The chip shortage has put a huge dent in the sales numbers. It seems to have affected all manufacturers or the sentiment is in the negative. Most sales numbers are below last month's numbers.

Hopefully, the festive season this month brings some cheer into the market.

+1 to the moderators for a 2-wheeler sales thread

It’s really sad to see Endeavour sales going from 928 to zero units. For a forty lakh vehicle, the numbers were very good and it’s not too far from Fortuner.

Re: September 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

September figures have no much relevance as all is about the semiconductor shortage.

Here is the overall situation and is bound to be carried forward in coming months too.

Auto Industry reeling under the semiconductor availability struggled to provide cars in meeting the demand. Expected to continue in October too. Most manufactures post a negative M-O-M growth.

India's biggest automaker Maruti Suzuki recorded a drop to -38 percent in Sept.'21 v/s Aug '21.

The upcoming festive season is expected to be muted and new launches are being postponed as the semi- conductor crisis is expected to affect most OEM’s.
- The market leader Maruti Suzuki Market Share dropped to 34% and the growth fell by 53.7 percent (Y-O-Y).

- Almost all automakers gained in market share at the expense of the largest car manufacturer loss in market share.
-Hyundai India growth too was in a negative trend at 34.2% percent YoY but it has a market share increase of 0.6%.
- Tata has been able to stabilize at the No.3 position. It gained the highest Market Share at 13.9 % last year and its growth was at +21.4%.
- Kia has a similar trend to Hyundai with a negative growth at 22.7% while its market share increase is at 1.4%
- M&M volumes de-grew at 12.3 percent in Sept 2021 over Sept. 2020 and was placed at the fifth spot in the ranking table. Market share gained is at 1.9%
-Toyota overtook the likes of Renault, Ford, and Honda to place itself in the sixth spot. Records a growth of 14.4% and a market share gain of 2.2%.
- Škoda overtook Nissan to record 3,027 units but records a volume drop of 20.9%(M-O-M) and has a market share of 1.6%

Highlights of Sept-21 dispatch figures:

- Maruti's Alto dethroned the siblings Wagon-R, Swift, and Baleno to jump to the Top Slot in model-wise rank for September 2021.

- 7 of the top 25 best sellers were from Maruti Suzuki while Hyundai had 5 and 4 from Tata.
-Hyundai had 5 models in the Top 25 and averaged 5,660 units per model.
-Tata with 4 models in the list averaged 5,731 units per model (which is higher than Hyundai)
- Kia had 2 offerings in the Top 25 and averaged 7,019 per model (which is still higher than Tata)
- Even with 3 models in the top 25, Mahindra's overall volumes was lower than that of Kia.
- SUV’s dominated with 10 models in the Top 25.
- Hatchback volumes have fallen in terms of models and volumes in the top 25
- Sedans had only 2 offerings in the Top 25 and the best seller was Honda City.

Hyundai:
- Hyundai India sales dropped too by 34.2 percent YoY and fell 29.4 percent MoM.

TATA Motors:
-Tata continues to perform welland has been able to stabilize at the No.3 position. It gained the highest Market Share in Sep'21 over last year and has seen great traction for all its models

KIA:
-Kia retained the fourth rank and sales dropped over 22 percent YoY and 13.8 percent MoM.

Mahindra:
-M&M volumes fell by 12.3 percent in Sep 2021 over Sep 2020 and was placed at the fifth spot in the ranking table.
The Indian automaker had a very successful showcase of the XUV700 and is poised to grow significantly if it is able to garner volumes for the model. The dispatches of XUV700 also started in Sep'21.

-Toyota maintained its lead over the likes of Renault and Honda to place itself in the sixth spot. Innova alone contributed to over 50 percent of Toyota's sales in September 2021!

Re: September 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Putting the semiconductor chip shortage aside, how come Jeep hasn’t sold even a single Made-In-India Wrangler in the past 6 months? Not a single piece even after a price drop? Literally nada in the first half of 2021-22 financial year? Or Jeep hasn’t provided details of the numbers sold?

It’s just sad to see Ford Endeavours numbers fall from 950 to 0. Such a good product. I was soo excited for the new generation of the Endeavour (the leak shared by GTO was soo promising) to hit our shores in 2023 and would’ve been a good upgrade to our 2018 Fortuner. Now with no real competition, I’m expecting Toyota wouldn’t go all out on the next generation Fortuner, but price it ridiculously high.

Re: September 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It is very interesting to see the compact sedan numbers. We are so used to seeing the Dzire selling at least two times more than all its competitors combined. From the past couple of months, the sales numbers of Dzire, Amaze, Xcent/Aura, Nexon, are more or less the same.

Could it be that the taxi/fleet operators are still hurting and struggling badly due to the pandemic, and those that have survived are just pushing their existing cars instead of buying new ones? Assuming, of course, that taxi operators made up a bulk of the sales in this segment.

Re: September 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Observations:
1) Looks like Hyundai-Kia are trying to do some rationalization of critical parts-otherwise how come Seltos which is consistently below 9K has suddenly gone ahead of Creta ? Even the Alcazar dispatches have dropped.
2) Amazing how the Jeep Compass is going from strength to strength inspite of the not-so-strong market sentiments and supply issues. FCA have really done a good job of the 2021 Compass revamp.
3) TML doesnt seem to be badly affected by supply chain issues.
