Thats right, I have it on good record from a very senior person from MUL that they will be replacing the Gypsy by....the Jimny. They had shown the 2 door at the Auto-expo this year.

They will be launching 2 variants, a 2-door and a 4-door. They may even put in the Pug engine thats in the Zen/Esteem Diesel right now, though it will first be launched in petrol only.

It will be priced a little above the current Gypsy, but that will be justified by the much better ride quality and interior fittings. So...looks like it will be a nice alternative to the good but big Scorpio, plus the 2-door makes a fun lil package too!

Can't wait.

The Gypsy is basically an earlier generation Jimny. So maybe they are launching the latest generation Jimny and I wonder if they will still call it the Gypsy or name it Jimny itself. It would be great if it had both a petrol and a diesel option. If they offer it for a little less than the Scorpio it should sell well.

Cheers

If this picture is anything to go by, I'll say that the old Gypsy is better looking.
It's like choosing between a Mahindra CJ and Scorpio. The old Gypsy, like the CJ is a cult. The Jimny just dosen't evoke the same passion.
Year 2000 Engine Specs for Jimny
1.6L, 4cyl, 79bhp, 90lbft
This might well be the engine that we will be offered. I don't think Suzuki ever used a diesel engine for their SJ / Santana / Jimny, but looking at our market situation, I feel Maruti may offer the ZenD's Peugeot diesel as an option.

Finally the Jimny. This design of the Jimny is really famous in Delhi. 2 guys had converted a Gypsy into a Jimny some years ago and it was also featured in Auto India.
btw isnt 79bhp quite less for a 1.6L engine??

The only Jimny's I could find, and those that are being sold around the world, are with 1.3 liter engines with their output ranging from anywhere between 78 - 82 horsepower. But then its also a very light vehicle. I personally feel that instead of importing a 1.3 liter with 80 horses, Maruti will pump the now famous Esteem 85bhp engine into this cute little runabout.

The Jimny is a very very basic vehicle, with a very basic suspension. Its nothing more than a city runabout. Forget about it competing with the SUV's..heck it wont even come close to the Scorpio in ride quality or space.

And yes, the 50 odd horsepowered Peugeot TUD5 with the jimny will be a grossly underpowered vehicle...it will beg for more!

Why are the replacin a vehicle thats not in demand. i guess there is no demand for the Gypsy now. It isnt a practical vehicle. MUL Shud have launched the Jimny long back. Bow its too late.
I guess its better never than too late.

The main reason, from what i've been told, is that the armed forces need the vehicle.

Also, you never know, there may be a possibility of putting the Baleno's engine in the Jimny....hmmmmm

Yeah rtech putting the Baleno engine in the Jimny might be possible and its not like the Gypsy was not in demand. It still is a cult car. I'd still love to own a Gypsy today . Basic 4x4 is what its all bout and I really like the 1.3 King. I guess ;ater it did come with the MPFI engine too 82 bhp if I'm not wrong

Cheers

Might be possible, but I cant think of any reason why they would do it. Compared to the Baleno engine, the Esteem engine is much more localised, FAR cheaper to make, only marginally less powerful and they already have experience with shoe-horning the engine in more than one vehicle.

Remember, economics play the biggest role in car manufacturing...in India atleast.

The Jimny has done very well in North America. but in Canada, its considered more to be a 'girls suv' . the Jimny cant replace the Gypsy.
