Current-gen Mahindra Scorpio spied testing with camouflage; facelift on cards?

Mod Note: Our Mahindra Scorpio Classic Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Existing Scorpio spotted testing with camouflage, looks like it’s true that the current generation will continue to co-exist with the next Gen Scorpio.

They should keep this Scorpio with same name as such and launch the new one as Stinger or some other name.

The tall, but practical tailgate does give some MUV vibe, but guess Pratap Bose could work some magic (number plate holder, cladding, badges) and make it better.

C'mon. What is with Indian market and the prefix, suffix obsession. Let an all new model come and continue the name plate legacy, instead of flogging the previous generation alongside.

What I think they'll stick the Scorpio Sting name on this one (more premium offering), and keep selling existing Scorpio alongside. So that it helps the initial hype building. With time and one facelift later, it will spin off into its own entity and lose the Scorpio naming (something what Maruti did with Swift Dzire). Of course, these are pure speculations, but this is what my hunch says, so they'll keep selling two products under same umbrella

What Mahindra can do is revive on of its old nameplates, and use it for the current gen Scorpio and carry on the "Scorpio" name with Z101. Moreover the Scorpio when sold in parts of Europe was called the ''Mahindra Marshall"

Mahindra is yet to tap into the offroad utility market that is now being fulfilled by old Marshall, Bolero etc - restored multiple times. Whenever they manage to free up resources to produce more vehicles that market is ready to take them. Bolero camper 4x4 yellow board is the only offering in that segment now.

The positioning of Bolero (Old gen) is at such a price that there is no room for a Commander & Marshall. They can make Bolero premium and then fit more utilitarian Commander and Marshall in the lower price point - but all that seems unlikely given the popularity of Bolero in itself.

That is a good one.
Not to forget the Mahindra Goa in some parts of Europe (Spain, Italy?)

True. Marshal, Commander and Armada are super cool names for Mahindra to revive. Though have to see what Jeep and Nissan would have to say.

My fav. Name the 5 door Thar as Armada.

Everyone's forgetting that the "XUV500" name is currently unused. They could launch the "new Scorpio" as the XUV500 and let the old one continue to be sold alongside.

It would make much more sense that calling it the Marshall which very few poeple remember or the Commander or Armada which are existing models under Jeep and Nissan respectively

There is no way, that will or should happen.

Scorpio name has always been attached to a strong sturdy reliable Ladder on Frame SUV, Mahindra should stick to it with a 4WD version.
They can keep the base model for price conscious market, like they used to have the M2Di version, in spite of Mhawk being standard across the range.

The grill is changing for sure. From the picture, the current 7-slat (Jeep compass type) is changing, also coming in there are those three horizontal strips inside the grill which the current one does not have.

Looks a like a dual tone exterior (Like one of the older generations. The current one are not dual colors) where in the lower body gets a dark shade, as seen in the image at the area where the camouflage is peeled off.

But the Scorpio spotted in the OP looks like the base variant as the headlights don’t get projectors, handles and mirrors are black and I think the cladding in the car is also black in colour, giving it the dual tone look. Which has been the case with the Scorpio for some time now in the S3 and S3+ variants.

A 2019 Scorpio S3:

And looks like only the lower variants of the current gen Scorpio are going to be on offer to provide the much needed space for the next gen model. ACI has mentioned the same as well.

Re: Current-gen Mahindra Scorpio spied testing with camouflage; facelift on cards?

Autocar India claims that side-facing seats are unlikely to make it to the next-generation Scorpio because of concerns with its NCAP rating, which might explain why the two generations are likely to be sold simultaneously.

This might be because lack of three-point seatbelts in the rear makes it impossible to install any available child restraint on the market, making the vehicle unsuitable for safely transporting children and causing the car to score no points at all for the vehicle-based, CRS-based or dynamic assessment in the child occupant protection category, like the Tata Nano and Nissan Tsuru.

Quote:
Mahindra could still replace the current model, however, the Global NCAP crash rating of the new car is proving to be a hurdle.

Much as they would like to, Mahindra cannot launch the new Scorpio with rear jump (side-facing) seats as this would negate any star rating the new generation car scores, which is very likely to be a high rating. This same reason is why the company had to discontinue the side facing seats on the Thar.

Mahindra has also gone on record saying that all its new generation cars would offer high levels of safety and score well in the GNCAP crash tests. Thus, side-facing seats on the new Scorpio are pretty much ruled out.
Quote:
Thus, Mahindra has to either launch the new car with side-facing seats and ruin the chance at a high star rating, or keep the old car for this specific purpose. Global NCAP could still pick the old Scorpio, crash it and give it a 0 star rating, however, this isn’t likely to impact the sales of the old car given the target audience.
Note: due to the introduction of AIS-098 and driver airbag mandate since the last test on the Scorpio, it is unclear whether the previous Scorpio will renew its 2016 adult protection rating of zero stars, despite Autocar's claim.
