Tata and Mahindra have taken different positions in the market. Mahindra wants go after the 10-30 lakh market, with new models like Thar, XUV700, Scorpio-N, the upcoming 5 door Thar and also possibly the electric version of the XUV700. They are generating volumes and probably more net profit per car since the average selling prices of all these new cars are at least 16-20 lakhs.

Tata on the other hand is gunning for the positioning that Hyundai seems to have exited. Hyundai is no longer the volume player it used to be. They have exited entry level cars like the Eon, Santro, their newer cars like the i20 are far more expensive. And this is where Tata has stepped in, with the Tiago, Punch and the Altroz. All these 3 are high volume cars.

So in a way it’s good that Tata and Mahindra are not fighting over all segments, yes they have the Harrier, Safari competing with the XUV700 and Scorpio-N, but thats a battle where Mahindra has clearly established leadership and supremacy.

The fact is that Hyundai does have a volume car in the Nios which falls in the same segment that Tiago and Punch both straddle, plus there is Hyundai Aura competing with the Tigor. Hyundai doesnt have an equivalent for the Punch and that is where I think TML has kind of outsmarted both Hyundai and MSIL because the Punch also competes with the broad range of Marutis like the Wagon R, Ignis and Swift.

It is apparent from the past few months that for Tata to beat Hyundai for no.2 position and stay there, they need to bring in a Creta competitor ASAP. They have managed to cut Hyundai's volumes in all major segments and until & unless they snatch some of those Creta customers, I don't see Tata beating (& maintaining) Hyundai for the second position for some more time.

Plus, we really need a good Creta competitor... I don't know how manufacturers are not able to see the goldmine that this segment actually is while Hyundai has brought in 2 gens of Creta and have minted money like anything.

Tata was able to supersede Hyundai's volumes yet again in Dec this year and placed itself in the second spot.

- Tata moved up to the second slot on the OEM-wise ranking and ended December with the best-ever annual wholesales performance in CY2022 with 5,26,798 units.

- Hyundai's sales in Dec 2022 stood at 38,831 units, up 20.2% from 32,312 units sold in Dec 2021. Market share went up to 14.1% from 12.7% YoY relating to a 1.4% growth.

Hyundai was able to regain its second spot from Tata.

Its SUV models – Creta, Venue, Tucson, Alcazar, and Kona Electric continue to maintain strong sales momentum. This lot of five SUVs together sold 27,532 units in January, which accounts for 55% of total sales.

I'm saying this swallowing my desi pride - the thread title shouldn't have "Now the No.2 Car Maker in India".

It's no unknown that Hyundai lowers it's factory dispatches during certain months, Dec for example. While it's a pretty good comeback, moving Tata to #2 should be after they sustain the lead over, say, three consecutive months.

• Punch turbo petrol with DCA
• Sigma based sedan with ICE and EV variants.
• Sigma based MPV a la Ertiga.
• Omega based boxy SUV, marking the return of Sumo. In two doors and four doors.
• Omega based proper MPV a la Carnival.
