The second-generation Renault Koleos has been spotted testing in India. Renault could be using it as a testbed for new components.



The Renault Koleos was launched in the Indian market in 2011. A mediocre product offered at a high price tag naturally found fewer takers.



The second-generation Koleos debuted in 2016. The SUV is based on the CMF C/D platform that also underpins models like the Espace, Talisman and Kadjar.



The SUV features a typical Renault grille at the front flanked by slim LED headlamps. The front fascia is accentuated by large C-shaped LED daytime running lights. At the rear, the Koleos gets slim wraparound tail lamp units and faux exhausts.

At launch, the Koleos was powered by two petrol and two diesel engine options, with power outputs ranging from 128 BHP to 173 BHP. Transmission choices included a 6-speed manual and a CVT. It also had the option of a four-wheel-drive.

Overpriced- of course, but I thought the Koleos was a very good looking car for its times.
Unfortunately, with the flop of the Koleos and Fluence, Renault has ditched its premium aspirations and now focused squarely at the low end of the Indian auto market- and this has largely made the brand stay relevant today.

I also think the Koleos was ahead of its times, and would do far better today as premium 5 seater market is a lot more mature in 2022. We probably need to thank the Compass for that.

Hope Renault brings it to India and disrupt the premium end of the market with capable hybrids!

This may confirm the launch of 2022 Nissan X- trail/ Qashqai in India. This was rumoured by a Nissan Dealer. If Renault -Nissan bring these via CBU, then it will have a premium pricing. If they locally assemble sharing their factory, then they can launch at competitive price competing the Compass, Xuv 700. Lets wait and watch how this segment grows.

It would really be a great addition. From the first picture this gives the vibe of Citreon C5 - might be the French influence.

The problem is Koleos might mostly come in 35 lakhs+ category and Renault might not have pull in that price bracket. Mainly difficult considering they also have Kwid which is one among the entry level cars in India.

When I tested the Koleos, it handled well but the turbo lag and dim witted gearbox spoilt it. Add to that the car looked like an old Tuscon and fit and finish was more Samsung than Renault

This version is not bad but am sure it is too late for the market as the Harrier, XUV700 are more modern.

I am sure Renault cannot price it under 25-27L ex-showroom.

In the the international market the Koleos is on par with the Tuscon in pricing if not more. This may not be the right product for Renault at this point.

A product like the Kiger makes more sense.

With the SUV fever at an all time high and the willingness of customers to spend more, many brands will follow VW (T-ROC) and Skoda's (Karoq) CKD strategies and bring their premium cross-overs to India.

Toyota has already be spotted testing the RAV4 in India. Nissan also seems to be planning the Qashqai/X-Trail. Renault re-introducing the Koleos in India does not seem surprising. Honda might do the same and bring back the CR-V via the CKD route.

These new entrants will certainly offer the customers more choices and break the monotony.

Rear portion caught me off-guard and made me believe it was an Audi at first if the badge of Renault wasn’t present, it’d be easy to convince ourselves it to be an Audi for sure. Seems like a promising product!

Spotted the Koleos near Kia showroom at Adyar, Chennai. Not sure if they are testing the car or just components! Looks great no doubt, especially dark shade suits it.

Spotted the car near Raj Bhavan Chennai. The car looked big from rear, the front facia had familiar Renault grill and sleak looking DRLs. Overall, looked like it will be positioned against Jeep Compass.

The Koleos first gen was a bit quirky unexpected in design. It was intended as a ‘halo’ product for Renault India but it didnt sell much. Not because of its lack of ability, but mostly because it was a new, relatively unknown brand here, it had quirky styling and wasnt butch and while it offered good safety kit it didnt offer much by way of gizmos and bling. It was launched when the Indian market was at a very early stage in its awakening.
This new Koleos looks very much more grown up. And yes , it will likely be a worthy competitor to the slew of SUVs out there. With Renault’s excellent, typically French suspension setup and unquestionable Paris-Dakar credentials, this will likely have all the capabilities desired. Renault definitely needs a Halo product in its line up because it has become extremely limited on account of its extreme focus on the mass market with all of its present offerings being engineered to a ‘cost’.
I do sincerely hope that they dont water this new Koleos down and make it a pale shadow of their offering in the EU.
If it follows the same EU Spec then it is almost a foregone conclusion that the new Koleos will end up being priced as befits a ‘Halo’ product for Brand Renault and therefore will almost certainly compete with the Jeep Compass and XUV700 and the Hyundai Tucson.
