1) Milage I drive close to 80 KM per Day to office Delhi to Noida
2) Pickup . VDi just z00000ms past other cars
3) peace of mind .. i know gov will find it harder to increase the price of diesel .... [;)]

No! NO! No! can't blame me for that! ;) it wasn't my fault...
Company car..had to be an Indica.. what else could I have chosen ?? LSI!! No way!

I commute 55 kms a day, 1100 bucks for a tankful, 17+ km average with 50% AC ... what else on earth do you want!!

Change the oil+filters etc.. every 5K and you are happy at least for 100K Km.

What I knew is Diesel Engines are also called as "Diesel Electric Locos"...A generator running on Diesel produce electricity which runs an electric motor / engine which in turn runs the Engine....

Pls dont comapre the TDIs and CRDis with the giant Locos :)

I dont see CRDI mentioned anywhere. Its direct injection and not common rail. As akroy said, the diesel drives a generator that drives the loco.

This was just for reference on the IR diesel engine and since the WDM2 is the most common of the engines used by them. As I said earlier, I read about CRDI in IR somewhere and someone else also confirmed.

I like Diesel for the following reasons in the order of preference -

1. Torque
2. Cost/KMs per litre
3. Long life (of the car)
4. Long range or longer continuous driving

#1. Improved only recently with all those turbo and crdi

I did not go for diesel for following reasons

1. Diesel models priced at a premium
2. More engine noise and NVH. (This is improving, but still not there..)
3. Hate waiting among trucks in a fuel pump in highways!
4. Less snob factor (for cars south of 10 lacs)

Cheap Fuel, a big torque & I simply love huge diesel powerplants..

Noise :p
Euro IV Compliant engine so doing something for the envirnoment from my side :p
Engine of the year
Petes will make the power go up, so easy to mod with just plug and play

If petrol and diesel were priced the same, I wonder how this thread would read. I'm talking about the fuel price.

1. if petrol was as cheap as diesel, then I would go for a petrol car.
2. if diesel was as expensive as petrol, then I would go for a diesel car, as diesel would still go farther per litre.

but i do believe, large number of customers, such as fleet operators, taxi guys would still choose diesel in scenario 1.

comments on reasons spelt out by you -

1. Diesel models are priced high but the advantages it gives outweighs the extra price you need to pay.
2. With windows up and AC ON you do not feel the engine sound or vibration in recent Diesels.
3. I own a diesel and have never been behind a truck in the fuel filling station in any of my fillings (by the way the range is so high that you always get to fill Diesel in your favourite pump and not in some unknown pump on a highway. Filling fuel in desperate situations are left to petrol car owners with much lesser range).
4. Less Snob factor - You got it man. This is the only advantage of a Petrol car for which people are willing to shell out more than double in terms of fuel price per KM.

With 100 Km + Daily driving and having clocked over 40K on my santro in 2 years, I seriously needed to think hard about my fuel bill. CNG was an option but with my regular drives for work to Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttaranchal Diesel fitted the bill.

Somehow I can't bring myself to favour a diesel over a petrol car except maybe for the bucks I have to shell out at the petrol pump. We have had a Contessa diesel and the engine was good but bloody hell on maintenance. Not to mention the NVH levels. Somehow the smoothness (if at all any) of diesel cars seems to vanish once they complete 3 years whichever technology you may speak of. Petrols are much sweeter. I have travelled in good diesel taxis in the UK and could always make out that it was a diesel car the moment I stepped inside and the engine started. With the petrols I couldn't even make out that the engine was started unless I looked at the tacho.

I believe the only reason why the world is going in for diesels is because of the mileage which is of course more than a petrol.
