I would not buy a diesel now because of the emissions. When we get Honda's clean diesel or Bluetec, I will. Other than CO2 emission (that too only in new generation common rail) its disastrous to environment and health.

Guys,
one basic doubt. people have told me that
a. diesel vehicles have more maintenance expenses than petrol ones
b. diesel vehicles have to be started atleast once a day, else the engine gets spoilt on non-usage


are these true or only myths? or this is correct for older diesel engines and doesnt hold true for the newer crdi and ddis ones?

Wow some myths here
1. Diesel engines do not last as long as petrol ones:
Ask that to the truckers and taxi guys
2. Diesel engines have lot of vibration
Newer engines are pretty silent now, though not as much as petrol
3. Diesel engines cost more to maintain
A little more, but even that is changed now with new technology. That said a diesel fuel pump system is more sensitive to adulterated fuel, thats why you have fancy bad fuel detection diesel filter in the safari
4. Diesel engines need to be started once a day
Now where did that come from! Funniest thing I heard.

With the availability of CRDi engines this 'KM theory' has become an old school of thought and some do tend to stress on it, still. I dont.

Both diesels that i've owned, were primarily bought because they were way better in terms of performance over their petrol counterparts. FE was also a major factor in the buying decision. Lets face it, you will always be smiling at the pump.

diesel is far cleaner than petrol. refer to an earlier post in the same thread.

based on the suggestions given by all of you. I was doing a bit calculations. i have Zen at this moment gives me around on average FE of 13. so if we take 1000 km per month the fuel bill will be: 1000/13=77 ltr of petrol which will cost 77*43.52=Rs 3351. if i switch to safari i will get Fe of 9.2-9.5 on average. taking 9.5 Fe the total diesel required will be 1000/9.5=105 whcih will cost 105*32.47=Rs 3417. So it will cost most monthly.
Let em know if I am doing some thing wrong.

You might as well compare your Zen with an Airplane, your Zen will still win the fuel cost factor. Atleast compare apples to apples.

Have you seen the sheer amount of space in a safari !!.

So howz this:

Hyundai Verna VGT CRDI gives 32.8 kmpl (as per HMIL website) but i will take 25 kmpl. As per your method of calculation 1000/25 = 40 ltrs which will cost 40*32.47= 1298.8. So you get a saving of appx 60% as compared to your Zen.

Safari EX and Verna CRDI costs are almost the same.

no offences but the reason i was comparing zen with safari, because i am planning to buy one, just trying to get good deal.

You should compare Petrol Safari FE (Which is a low 6 KMPL) to its diesel variant which is 9.5 to 10 KMPL. Please do this math and you will be surprised at the savings.

Then you should look at the other features too and not buy by the mileage only(then buy Verna). Each vehicle that we buy has a percieved value too, so as long as we are happy with it, go for it

Cost is a tough thing to explain. Cost is not just Rupees, but the space also needs to be factored in. Well, look at it this way, for the same price (almost), you are probably getting a bigger car (big? far bigger actually!). This is not directly related, but if you are comparing the fuel expenses this way, you may also want to compare the depreciations. Bigger the car, more is the depreciation.
