Toyota doubles down on its hybrid bet in India: More to come.

Its first SUV in Hybrid format is rumoured to be priced at below INR 20 lakhs.

More than 50% of Hyryder pre-orders are for the full hybrid, though people aware of Toyota's production plans say this could settle at 30% to 40% with the cheaper, mild hybrid becoming more popular in India.

Once numbers pick up, the cost will come to a point where hybrids will become mainstream. This will lay the ground for an eventual switch to fully electric or fuel cell vehicles.

Toyota's next hybrid for India will be a multi-purpose vehicle, or people-carrier, expected later this year or early in 2023 (Innova Hycross?)

Interesting to note that the battery capacity is finally quoted in this source.

How much pure EV range would that translate to?

Is the battery capacity same as that in Camry?

As per my SA, they are negotiating rebate for strong hybrid with few states like Maharashtra. Hence, there is a delay in price announcement.

This may sound too cynical!

Why not announce the pricing and then negotiate the rebate? This would be a more transparent option. Otherwise company can just pocket the rebate and lauch at same ex-showroom price they always intended. Specially if they are able to get this rebate in major states.

Rebate on tax - its 28% currently - same as levied on ICE. EVs enjoy reduced tax. Also, states give relief on road tax and registration charges to EVs, but not to Hybrids. I guess Haryana is the only state in India that has reduced RT on Hybrids (strong ones like Camry, Vitara, Hyryder). It will be years before full EVs become mainstream vehicles (especially passenger cars). The transition will be first on fleet and then on personal - given our infrastructure - surely 15-20 years. Given this, incentivization to genuine hybrids will help reduce the use of diesel vehicles. The car maker with with over 43% market share is investing big time in hybrids - incentivization will definitely make these cars more cost effective and increase adoption.

Well tax rebates are always interesting.

So in such cases does the GST head get removed from the invoice itself ?

Also, my generic understanding is that businesses can anyway avail input tax credit on GST,, so if GST is removed from the invoice, they will lose the opportunity to avail the income tax credit.

On the other hand, individuals outside the ambit of GST, like salaried class should benefit.

Of course for other components like road tax and registration, both businesses and salaried class should benefit.

The other interesting thing that is emerging is that Toyota appears to be using this rebate discussion as a lever for increasing its profit at the unit level. Probably, if the govt offers a rebate of x, they may utilize that to jack up the price by 0.x to skim off as unit profit.

PS. I am not.a tax professional, so kindly point out if there are some gaps in the above observations.

Indian Gumment and environment is "Itna Shudh" that they'll not give tax rebate to 'dirty' True Hybrids they'll only give to EV's! With BS7 norms they'll see that your vehicle's exhaust smells of 'jasmine and roses' and fill your vehicle exhaust in cylinders and supply it to hospitals instead of Oxygen. Once BS 7 norms 'kick in' then most automakers will be literally 'kicked out' due to 'stiff norms'.

On a 100/- car, if the GST is 28% and additional cess (> 4 Meter car) is 14%, the exshowroom price is 145.92.

Now, if states levy 15% of Life Tax, the On road cost moves to 167.8.

Any reduction in GST will impact the subsequent cess/Life Tax.

Any reduction in GST or cess will impact the final buying cost.

In addition, any rebate provided to Buyer for buying a hybrid will again help sales.

If the Central government helps in anyway, this should contribute to less oil imports.

Its a win win for all parties hence negotiations.
