Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2022

The topline is great but I bet the bottom line is better than ever! Most of these luxury cars are now selling at full price, especially the leader MB with its direct selling sales system.

The bargain hungry Indian customer has accepted the “new normal”
I hope the tide changes from a sellers market back to a buyers market. The last of which happened in end 2019 before the pandemic and during the BS4 to BS6 stock clearance. What a great time that was to buy!

Sad to see Audi slowly creeping down to the bottom of the pile.
Used to be leading in sales during 2012-2014 timeline especially with the previous gen A4 and Q3 raking in solid numbers those days.
They should soon take a leaf out of MB India's book and follow it up.

The bigger picture is that the luxury car sales have been stagnated since the past 4-5 years tells a lot about India’s economic story in real life!

Not having any diesel engines is hurting AUDI sales even more. And the VAG group has no plans to even introduce BS6 diesels in India. Hope they change their stance on this.

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2022

IMO Luxury segment has been relegated to stay like this in India due to following factors:
1. The constant price increase by luxury car manufacturers improving their bottom line realising that they are only going to sell a limited number come what may.
2. consistent flowing down of features from luxury to mass market segment. Earlier it was the Koreans but now Indian OEMs are following up with a stellar job
3. Fear of shorter life span by NGT rulings and hence impacting secondary sale market
4. Not enough first time buyers getting added since the entry point barrier has increased significantly. Repeats are significantly driving purchases. Though average car purchase price has gone from 5lac to 8lac bracket but the entry selling point for a decent luxury car has moved from ~30L to 50L
5. What would be interesting to see is the model wise break-up and if there is any significant movement in average purchase price for this segment.

Numbers don't tell the actual picture, Audi has quoted the CBU numbers and those are restricted to just 2 mainstream models for now.
A4 and A6 are selling very well, Q5 and Q7 have received good response especially in the biggest market NCR. All of them are CKD so not in the data here.
So the cover isn't necessarily the book here.

Cheers

Audi India's sales numbers are confusing. FADA is not showing the report properly. In Jan 2022, Audi India sold higher than JLR and Volvo. But now Volvo is outselling Audi by showing only CBU sales of Audi . This shows that that there something wrong with FADA. I don't know why FADA is reporting only CBU sales of Audi India. I see so many new A6s and A4s on the road nowadays. I think there should be a thread on FADA's scam regarding Audi India's sales report.

Rather impressive, considering their new business model where the power has been taken away from dealerships.

Something isn't right with these FADA numbers. They are too high for CBU cars and too low if CKD are included.

Not bad. All thanks to the Urus . Even when spending 3+ crores, we want practicality. 2-seater sports cars are almost useless in India. Ferrari India sells what, 2 cars a month? Lamborghini is hence thrice as big as Ferrari in India.

Well said. Luxury car sales have been more or less the same since a couple of years. But the average transaction price has greatly shot up.

Even overall, the Indian car market has stagnated - dedicated thread on the topic (Auto industry is a 'vast stagnant market' - India is stuck at 250000 cars / month since a decade). Although, the action has now moved to the very profitable 12 - 25 lakh segment (earlier, India was all about the <12 lakh segments).

Good show by Mercedes and BMW, and for the former it will even get better with the new C coming in. It has got more than enough to differentiate from the A-Class sedan (literally a mini S-Class).

And great to see Volvo up there in the chart. They are competing in that segment with the big Germans but kind of treading their own path; still quite a bit of catch-up to do when compared to the top two.

What is cooking at JLR? I was surprised that they're doing as much as Volvo who have now moved to 3rd spot.

So did a little digging and ignoring covid numbers highlighted in red, JLR used to do approx 1.5 - 2x of volvo and still over a longer period Volvo has been able to hold on to their numbers (considering overall swings in absolute numbers) whereas JLR numbers have been decreasing steadily.

As per current numbers in website, Volvo has a product suite of 4 SUVs (incl Hybrid) and 2 Sedans whereas JLR has 5 options in Jag and 7 options in LR. So theoretically JLR has a wider portfolio and still is doing less numbers.

What is it then - Chip constraint? Discontinuation of best selling models? issue in data?

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2022

Are these numbers of cars that have been retailed and delivered or does this list comprise the number of bookings for each manufacturer?

If it is the former, I believe the numbers would have been way higher as most of the cars today are under a waiting period.

Surprising to see the numbers going up despite a 'seller's market' situation that we are in.

These are cars that are delivered to customers and registered with RTO in Vahan database.

So what will be missing is essentially -
  • vehicles delivered but still awaiting registration
  • vehicle registrations done in AP, MP, Lakshadweep & Telangana as these states are not yet on Vahan (i.e. 1,391 out of 1,600 RTOs across the country as on Feb)

Not necessarily. If there is limited supply of cars due to chip shortage -> registration numbers will be low.

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2022

Government seem to stall luxury car sales, brings in new rule.

Quote:
Government’s mandate for BIS certification to hit luxe market.
Quote:
Supercars may be flying off the shelf now but the segment is expecting a knock on its jaw once the government’s mandatory quality control orders for wheel rims and safety glass come into play
The quality control order mandates that all wheel rim components and safety glass used in cars sold in India — whether locally made or imported — should have the BIS certification.
