That is an interesting find. I could just see the barely concealed sensor like thing above the driver on the windshield. For Toyota's TSS= ADAS equivalent. They could have surely integrated it better, but guess the huge windshield means visbility won't take a hit.

Naively expected we would get preference since we have overtaken Indonesia in Innova sales for almost a decade. Guess Indonesia is still home of the Kijang Innova.

re: Toyota Innova Hycross, now unveiled

Will Toyota phase out 2.4 diesel engine from India? If I am not mistaken, then this engine is currently doing duty only in Innova.

If Toyota plans to keep selling B-O-F Innova albeit in limited numbers, then does 2.8 AT makes more sense? AT will be more profitable and variants can be trimmed to suit sales. With only 2.8D(Innova, Fortuner, Hilux) and 2.0P(Hycross) to manufacture, it should definitely help streamline logistics for Toyota. 2.8D MT can be sold in existing G trim for commercial purposes.

Just a wild guess/theory.

It would make more sense for Toyota to provide a 2.4 variant in Fortuner (Hilux is dead anyways) with only 2WD. They did it earlier when they sold the previous generation facelift Fortuner with Innova's 2KD 2.5 engine but at a higher state of tune.

If you look at sales there are more numbers of 2GD 2.4 engines sold every month than the combined numbers of 1GD 2.8 engines in both Fortuner and Hilux. So which would be more economical for Toyota? Put the 2.4 engine in 2WD Fortuner or put the 2.8 in Innova?

BOF Innova will soldier on in markets like Indonesia atleast till this version reaches its EOL which is usually 10years for Toyota BOF vehicles. I expect the same for India also. The USP of the innova is its ruggedness which is appreciated by many. It is basically a hilux pickup with van body and coil sprung rear axle. If the next generation replacement of the crysta is a monocoque it will be a huge disappointment. Monocoques are cheaper to build compared to body on frame vehicles. If that happens there will not be a true replacement for the current crysta.

They could export I guess, since India is one of the three countries globally that manufacturs Toyota diesel engines. 2.8 and MT, dread if they go the Phillipines way and give it the 5 speed manual. I am hoping the BS6.2 and RDE would force Toyota to give the 2.4l version the much needed 6 speed manual transmission.

Couldn't understand the purpose of that short lived 2.4l Fortuner. They gave it a bodykit and priced it more than the base variant of the 3.0l model. They could have atleast given the 135bhp tune to the higher variants of the 1st gen Innova instead.

Pray that they are planning for an Innova family of MUVs, with the Hycross/Zenix being the newest member and the Innova making the jump to the TNGA-F platform (highly unlikely) Or since the next gen Hilux/ Fortuner will take a good 2-3 years to come, they maybe waiting to see the sales figures of the Innova Hycross VS Innova Crysta.

Then again, they could do away with the 2.8l engine. The 2.4l engine could do it all with some mild hybrid push, while the more power needs maybe met by the 3.3l V6 diesel in the next gen Hilux and Fortuner.

Here is the take on the inside of the Innova Zenix:

The last detail also seen in the central glass area comes a kind of box. This indicates there is technology embedded in the latest Innova, most likely Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). This feature consists of a pre collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, automatic high beam, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitor. Of course, the T-Intouch telematics feature is also embedded.

In addition, there is an additional box that is most likely a dashcam or sensor for accessing contactless toll gates.

re: Toyota Innova Hycross, now unveiled

My wild guess is that this all new monocoque product is a stretched, repackaged, redesigned mpv version of the corolla cross hybrid model.
Recent updates to corolla cross throws in some of the equipments as seen in the spy pics too.

Few pics and updates on the 2023 corolla cross.

Toyota Corolla Cross completes the Europe’s largest range of SUV models
True SUV look and practicality for family customers
First model to use Toyota’s fifth generation self-charging hybrid electric system, which delivers more power and greater driving pleasure with higher fuel and emissions efficiency
New electronics platform supports a new fully digital 12.3-inch driver’s combimeter and Toyota Smart Connect multimedia and infotainment package with 10.5-inch high-definition touchscreen
AWD-I drivers with consistent and confident performance in challenging conditions, further peace of mind and a sense of safety and security
High level of safety with T-Mate: combination of the latest generation of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) with new and upgraded functions and the possibility to get Over-The-Air Updates (OTA) as well as additional advanced driving and parking assistance systems
Quote:
Performance

The new model is available with 1.8* and 2.0-litre powertrains with front-wheel drive, plus optional intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD-i) for the 2.0-litre. The 1.8 system benefits from a 15% increase in output, to 140 DIN hp/103 kW, giving 0-100 km/h acceleration in 9.9 seconds with 112 – 121 g/km CO2 emissions. Maximum power for the 2.0 system is up 8% to 197 DIN hp/145 kW, cutting the 0-100 km/h to 7,6 seconds for FWD and to 7,5 seconds for AWD while keeping CO2 emissions within a range between 113 to 120 g/km and between 119 to 127 g/km with AWD-i.

* 1.8-litre version initially only available in Israel and Turkey.

Hybrid system design

The changes introduced for the fifth generation hybrid electric system include components that weigh less and are more compact – qualities that help maintain efficiency in tandem with the increase in output – but which maintain the reliability that has become a hallmark of Toyota’s technology.

The system uses a new power control unit (PCU) reduces the level of electrical losses in the system (-14% 1.8, -6% 2.0) helping maintain fuel efficiency. The unit also runs quieter and, in the AWD-i model, incorporates the rear PCU, saving further space and weight.

The PCU is installed directly above a new transaxle that is 15% lighter than before thanks to the use of new materials and which uses new, compact, high-output drive motors. Using low-viscosity oil reduces internal friction and adds to the all-round improvement in efficiency.

Hybrid battery

The new lithium-ion hybrid battery is smaller and lighter but has a higher output – qualities that contribute to both the car’s dynamic performance and its fuel efficiency. Compared to the battery pack deployed in the previous system, weight is down by -14% and output up by 14%. Toyota has optimised the battery’s cooling system to secure quieter performance and longer battery life.

The basic greenhouse is from the Innova Crysta, but the dashboard rendering is based on the Noah/Voxy. Love the fact that they went for this useful practical design than something like the useless dashboard of Corolla family.

Technically correct since they are based on the same platform. But it would more apt to say that the Hycross is a decontented developing world version of the Noah/Voxy.

Hope it is just the bonnet height/lenght and grille that is the SUV part, instead of draping all the sides with plastic claddings.
