Any product marketeer doing the Andheri -South Mumbai commute would have seen this - Most cars have the front passenger seat back rest kissing the windscreen

Another opportunity is the 15,000 or so Skoda Superb and Camry owners who have nowhere to go for more legroom in their next upgrade. The latest Camry and Superb are a bit bland; one segment higher and you trade space for prestige and not much else.

Unlike Mercedes, the BMW portfolio’s higher slots are occupied by lower-priced entry-level products. Does it also indicate that chauffeured Indian audiences prefer luxury quotient over sportiness credentials?
A slightly different point of view here. As you rightly mentioned that the BMW has sportier credentials than Mercedes, a higher number of middle aged people enter the luxury car market than relatively younger people, again, the younger people are looking more at announcing to the world that they have arrived than the other group, which is more interested in the luxuries the luxury brands offer.

With this perspective, its very easy to see the demand for entry level but flashier BMWs and upper level Mercedes' cars which are more luxurious.

BMW should fiddle around with the luxury quotient and the ride quality as you mentioned only on their higher offerings which might directly compete with the E-Class, and leave the entry level segment alone (don't fix what ain't broken)

Re: Luxury car sales analysis in India | FY 2021-22

I am new to TBHP and this analysis blew me away. Being a lover of number crunching, the various graphical representations of analysis is super interesting and gives you a deep insight into the distribution and share of different luxury car brands in India.

BMW X1 only wins this one for its stance that no other offers at that price range. Merc is on the top precisely because the rich buy cars to be chauffeur driven and hence the overall comfort and luxury features on offer become more important than the engine performance: an area where BMW is a clear winner. As someone pointed out, BMW needs to tweak a little bit for the Indian market and relaunch its 3 series which should expectedly bring up the sales and offer a larger market share to BMW.

Would have been interesting to put the numbers of super premium brands like Porsche, Lamborghini etc also.

They also claim to be sold out for 2022 and probably are having a record year in terms of numbers. The Urus seems to have done exceptionally well.

Feel really sad for the Jaguar. They have amongst the sexiest looking cars, way better than the quirky BMW and Lexus cars. May be the (lack of) reliability is the reason. But then, Evoque and Velar are doing good. I regard F Pace, a match for Velar in every way and yet 10-15 lakhs cheaper. Beats me how Velar is outselling F Pace by so much. May be they should market aggressively.

As far as I know, Jaguar has dedicated themselves to become a full time EV maker by 2025. That puts a Damocles sword on their ICE models and that is what has affected its sales I think. They do not have a full blown EV line-up either at the moment. They should be up there on the charts come 2027ish

True that. These LWB sedan versions are exclusively available in China for a long, nearly from all the luxury brands. However, Mercedes India has shown willingness and courage to invest and get an RHD version with a diesel engine for India. It seems like the person who took the call was – Eberhard Kern, who was MBIL India's MD from Dec-2012 to Sep-2015, during the global product development phase in Germany and China. He was a true sales guy who brought Mercedes back on track in India. LHD LWB E-Class was unveiled in China sometime around April 2016, and the Indian RHD version was launched later by Roland S. Folger, then MBIL India's MD, in Feb 2017.

As per JATO’s (Jan-Mar) 2022 report, discounts do exist for Mercedes products (in line with BMW) with their new hybrid sales model, now it's hidden.

Thank you for your insights. Seems BMW India's CEO need to be more vocal and proactive in perception management like his counterparts at Mercedes and Audi.

Interesting perspective, Hyundai has sold 1,18,092 Creta in the same period and earned revenue of around ₹ 9,500 crores. A single super hit mass-market product can do such magic.

Such psychographic assessment is really important from a market research perspective. BMW should take note of that.

Re: Luxury car sales analysis in India | FY 2021-22

Mind-blowing analysis & some really eye-opening insights into the mind of the luxury car buyer. It would also be great if the niche luxury car brands, namely Lexus, Porsche, Lambhorghini, Maserati etc. data could also be analysed.

Going through this post is like a mini masterclass in branding and marketing:

- Toyota stands out as an invincible brand and probably the only one that satisfies every consumer - from a taxi operator to a 1 Crore+ Vellfire buyer and the luxury-segment bracing Fortuner. Its literally a "class-act" in delivering great products that stick to the brand ethos of bullet-proof reliability, no matter the segment.

- The other "T" that stands out - Tata with the JLR brand - as per data above, is doing not-so-great numbers, but most importantly, L & R have got their act right in the SUV segment and are really high on the desirability quotient. Its sometimes hard to believe that these brands are from the same stable that also sells you the humble "namak" (Tata Salt) in your daily meal. It is impressive that the JLR group has managed to retain that premium positioning in India & still sell in decent numbers.

- The LWB E-Class, though in reality, born out of massive demand in China for a longer wheelbase version, resulted in Mercedes shifting the entire segment single-handedly in India. I believe this move has been so inspiring & profitable for Mercedes, that is prompting them to think only upwards in terms of price, luxury & exclusivity (referring to the news of the Mythos brand).

Re: Luxury car sales analysis in India | FY 2021-22

Is there a comparison chart of maint/repair charges/replacement parts availability and ease of doing it in India for these cars? More importantly, are these a factor for buyers that intend driving them for long.
