I think you meant Versa. Of the ones you mentioned the production of the Baleno and the Esteem has already been stopped.

Besides, the capacity problem is for producing diesel engines. None of the cars you mentioned comes with diesel engines. It's the Swift DDIS that is taking up the production capacity.

Versa- ok.

Baleno, esteem- already stopped.

800+ Omni- Combined sales of around 14,000 units per month. Why would they stop as long as people want it?

1. The contract between Suzuki and FIAT was signed with GM's persuasion on Osamu's behest. The news reports at that time stated that the Indian plant would have annual capacity of 100,000 engines.

2. Has there been any increase in the output since? Only 8300 units per month?

3. Given that the Swift diesel keeps on having a healthy order book, it is possible that there are limitations in FIAT-Maruti contract that limits the numbers of engine they can produce and sell. A capacity cap? Not unlikely, they are license manufacturing, after all.

4. Or a limitation in the original contract terms as to which Suzuki platforms can accomodate the said FIAT engine?

5. It may also be possible that they are not allowed the rights to sell the 90 bhp variant (as yet...), which will be more appropriate for the SX4 as compared to Swift's engine.

6. Finally, the SX4 is a joint product of FIAT and Suzuki, and I do not think they are selling any 1.3 turbodiesel version. It will likely have the 1.9, as and when the two partners do sort out their contract terms.
Or maybe they are already sorted...

hi...

as i just pointed out on another thread - maruti ain't full of dopes.

if they are going to put out a swift sedan with a claimed 80/20 diesel petrol split - odds on that the reason they have done so is so that they don't need to put a diesel in the sx4.

the gap exists in their lineup and rather than having petrol sx4 sales cannibalised by it's diesel sibling - why not introduce another range at a price point where it gives buyers the option to get a sensible city run about - the swift or a comfortable city tourer - the swift sedan.

they are playing it smart and good for them too!

cheers amigos.

I saw an article in magazine which briefly mentioned about various models that will be launched in 2008, SX4 diesel was one among.

I am sure Maruti would want to take some pie from Verna and Fiesta Diesel, that will come up with SX4 diesel.

Maruti plans to launch the diesel only after Honda launch the new City, this way they can go for a direct kill of the City.

New Honda City in july 2008? That sounds unlikely. If it is going to be launched that soon, shouldn't it be there at the auto show?

The current Honda City came out internationally in 2002.

Which means its 6 years old. New model should be out this year and knowing Honda, they will bring it to India soon too.

New NHC @ Diwali 2008 - as I have shouting my self hoarse in another thread. The SX4 DDis could be coming in at the end of the year - MUL's ace to Honda's King I guess.
