Now here is the interesting point ... Maruti has not stopped production of 800 model. Wonder why? Because when the TATA 1 Lakh car would be launched, immediately within a day or maybe the same day of TATA's launch, Maruti would launch a stripped down version of 800 at a price which would be a little more than TATA's car.

This is what I have been predicting too. It hardly costs Maruti anything to make the 800; what with manufacturing it for over two decades. It wont be too difficult for them to price-cut it heavily. I also agree with Bunnypunia that the 1 lac car will not be 1 lac OTR. It could be anywhere between 1.3 - 1.5 lacs when all taxes, insurance etc are taken into the picture.

Therefore, its main competitors will be the Maruti 800 AND user-car options. A significant amount of its potential buyers could choose a "proper" decently equipped car over the expectedly basic 1 lac car.

Any guesses on what Tata will name the one lac car?

I feel they should name it in favour of the legendary JRD Tata. They already have dedicated the SuMo to their pioneer Late Mr. Sumant Moolgaonkar.

This car is actually a gas-powered car. I does not always run on fuel. It uses compressed gas to turn its pistons and when the gas pressure reduces to some failsafe level, the ICE kicks in to pressurize the gas.

I know this might sound ridiculous. But I got this info from some close associates working in TATA and for conformation, I saw an add about Hybrid cars in msn.com sometime last week. Go check it out....

Thats the reason for its low production cost.
