Rumour: Mahindra looking to acquire GM’s Talegaon plant EDIT: Hyundai signs purchase agreement

According to a media report, Mahindra is evaluating the possibility of acquiring General Motors’ factory at Talegaon, near Pune.

It has been reported that Mahindra executives have been visiting the Talegaon plant over the past few weeks, just as GM’s term sheet with Great Wall Motors (GWM) expired on June 30, 2022.

Another brand that’s in the race to take over the facility is MG Motor India. However, being a Chinese-owned brand, the deal may not get priority.

It’s been 5 years since GM announced its exit from the Indian market. The carmaker’s Halol unit was acquired by MG, while GWM had shown interest in taking over the Talegaon unit. However, due to the recent border tensions, Chinese investments have come under intense scrutiny, which even led to GWM scrapping its plans.

General Motors is not the only American carmaker to wrap up its India business in recent years. Ford too has shut shop and is selling its assets in India. The blue oval's Sanand unit has been acquired by Tata Motors.

re: Rumour: Mahindra looking to acquire GM’s Talegaon plant EDIT: Hyundai signs purchase agreement

Mahindra has a backlog of over 1 Lakh vehicles and getting a new plant plus getting it operational will be the only way to make sure that the money keeps rolling. They have also done kind of paper launches of other Electric Vehicles, this time will tell on how far this deal is done.

Is Mahindra looking for expanding more manufacturing units for its ICE or for its Electric portfolio. Since this Manufacturing plant has been already setup, Mahindra will just have to tweak it according to their needs. They will be able to save time plus lot of money.

Hyundai Motor, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra in race to acquire GM India Talegaon plant.

The South Korean car maker appears to be leading the race with multiple meetings with GM India in the last fortnight.

For all three carmakers it is a race to a one million production capacity even as market leader Maruti Suzuki continues to add new factories every two years.

Quote:
there has been fervent activity at the Talegaon plant in the last fortnight with frequent visits by senior delegates of Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors at the factory for negotiation
Quote:
Over the last couple of months – executives from Mahindra & Mahindra also visited the plant to conduct a study for a potential acquisition of the plant to bring in incremental capacity.
The interest in the GM India plant is higher due to an attractive acquisition price which may not exceed $50-75 million, but whoever acquires the factory may have to manage the workers. The workers union at Talegaon factory have been engaged in an intense legal battle with the US car maker in multiple courts.

The advantage is TATAs and Mahindras know how to pull the strings cos purchase involves both Government and managing the labour unions and TATAs have an edge in sympathy of trade unions.
