A comparison with mass market brands-

1. Hyundai has 1100+ dealers across India and they sold 49,000 cars in August, translating to 41 cars per dealership

2. Renault has 500+ dealers across India and they sold 7000 cars, translating to 14 per dealership

3. Citroen has 19 dealers across India, and they sold 850 cars in August, translating to 45 cars per dealership.

In the cars sold per dealership metric, Citroen is perhaps the best among all European auto OEMs. While it may have done well given the circumstances, clearly, Citroen has to expand its dealer network to become a mass market car.

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Vehicle retail sales up by 8% in August 2022

According to the data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), vehicle retail sales went up by 8% in August 2022, compared to the same month last year.

August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-1.jpg

Overall sales for the month of August 2022 stood at 15,21,490 units, compared to 14,04,704 units in August 2021. Compared to August 2019, when 16,43,903 units were sold, total vehicle retails have dropped by 7.45%.

In spite of good monsoons, the festive season began with a dampener during Ganpati. The PV segment showed strong growth thanks to new feature-rich vehicle launches. Vehicle availability has improved but the waiting period continues to remain high.

Tractor sales dropped by 31.72%, from 72,208 units in August 2021 to 49,305 units.

Two-wheeler sales increased by 8.52% to 10,74,266 units from 9,89,969 units in August 2021.

Three-wheeler sales were up by 83.14% in August 2022. 56,313 units were sold, compared to 30,748 units in August 2021.

Passenger vehicle sales went up by 6.51% compared to the previous year. 2,74,448 units were sold last month, compared to 2,57,672 units in August 2021.

Commercial vehicle sales also increased by 24.12%. 67,158 units were sold in August 2022, compared to 54,107 units in the previous year.

On a side note, these dealership figures are very inflated.

OEMs use clever tricks like "customer touch-points" to inflate the number of dealerships. Renault only has around 300 actual dealerships. The remaining are small village/town level outlets, 1/4th the size of an actual dealership. Even then, an average of 23 cars per Renault dealership (7000 cars by 300 dealerships) is quite poor.

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

After all the hype and effort VW has put in for the Virtus and Taigun, still struggling with numbers. If they were happy with the 1500 odd number, may as well have continued to sell the Polo . Even at the fag end of its run, it was averaging 1000 units easily.

Thanks for the sales number. A commendable efforts from moderators to put visualization on different statistics.

I have put my comment on SocrpioN thread as well: Very curious to Know this >7000 numbers of Scorpio dispatched from factory, does this include the ScopioN & classic both? I saw loading of ScorpioN on big trailers last week.

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I have heard a lot of criticism in the past regarding the numbers shown in this thread (dispatches) and how they are varying from actual retail sales. Well, even the FADA sales numbers do not represent accurately the market situation. There are various numbers of vehicles at various points of time undergoing registration and are actually paid for but which are not accounted for by FADA. Similarly, institutional sales or special sales do not reflect in FADA numbers. But yes, they point to a trend, which is all one can make out.

The wholesale numbers when looked in to as a long term trend and not on a month on month basis, the various games played by sales teams average out, and a true picture emerges.

This statistics is irrelevant IMHO. The relevant question could be: Lets say if Citroen has same dealership as Renault (500), will they still sell equal to Renault?

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Is there any problem apart from chip shortage or production constraint for Magnite/Kiger duo? Hardly 6k units at max per month. Similarly, only 3-4K units combined for Kushaq/Taigun.

Honda hasn’t dispatched 10k units in more than an year! With Jazz and WRV bowing out, it will remain same in near future.

Moreover, as per FADA report shared by Rushlane on Twitter, Honda dealers are the least satisfied along with Maruti and Tata.

We know the reason for Honda ranking

Why Toyota dealers aren’t satisfied?

Those statistics are real, while you are asking a hypothetical question that can have many answers. For example, i feel that if Tata can sell 12,000 Punchs through its 900 odd dealerships this month (14 per dealer), high possibility that Citroen can also do 7000 from 500 dealers- provided it expands its portfolio, adds more variants (automatics) to the C3, invests in customer service and building the overall brand etc. Others may feel that it might not be possible for them, but foretelling the future for a new entrant is all speculative at this point.

I thought the numbers mentioned are factory dispatches and not dealer sales. C3 being new obviously there will be backlog and I am sure dealers will have inventory too. Will have to see if they can sustain 800+ cars with 19 dealers. I am not an expert, but i find their strategy wrong. While launching mass market car, Citroen should have strengthened their dealer base and then launched the car, like what KIA did. The French simply fail to read Indian market.

It seems that Hyundai has stopped the production of Santro. If that’s the case, it’s really a shame because Santro was a competent product and it’s rivals are still selling in good numbers.

It's surprising to see that Volkswagen is still selling Ventos. I wonder if those numbers are factory dispatches or the sales made by the dealer. Can one still pick a Vento?

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It looks like Hyundai and Kia are holding themselves back.

There is a humongous waiting list for Hyundai and Kia Diesels. I myself have been in the waiting list for a couple of weeks and the quoted delivery is almost after 2 months. Where as almost all Maruti's (except a few) are readily available.

If Kia/Hyundai sort their production, i am sure their numbers will be a bit higher .

Same is the case with Mahindra, not ramping up production inline with the market expectations.

Maruti's is the beneficiary of the current situation.

In short, these numbers are a bit skewed. and might be like this, for a couple of months.

Do we have the model wise breakup of EVs. For example Nexon vs Tigor sales / registrations/ dispatches?

It would be interesting to see model wise trends as input towards purchase decisions.

Likewise, once the strong hybrids are in the market, it would be helpful to see data and trends of strong hybrids.

If this request can be considered for future threads, that will be helpful.

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

AUDI only sold 35 units in August? That doesn't look right. For the first 6 months in this year, they sold around 1800 cars which is about 300 cars per month average.

Nice to see the numbers for Mercedes and it seems the new centralised model is working well for them where discounts have almost gone.
