As far as engines go, Diesel is more efficient. A petrol hybrid due to its design can offer improved fuel economy in a city driving cycle (regen, motor assist, EV mode etc). However once you push the pedal down on a highway trip, you really are lugging around all that additional weight for no joy. Given hybrids usually come with lackluster engines, you`d rather go by train or take a flight instead.
